Giving it 5 stars because our overall experience was lovely - a couples get a way for one night - we booked the eat, love stay deal which included a lovely room, dinner bed and breakfast. All staff were lovely and the grounds and hotel itself gives it a country luxury feel - only room for improvement could be at dinner - my main was lovely but appetiser and dessert could have been better (perhaps I chose poorly from the menu) - good choice at breakfast too and once again staff smiley and friendly x a wedding was going on in the evening we stayed but we had no disturbances or noise and the comfort of the room was bliss (comfiest bed ever) - feel like overall the hot is between a solid 4.5 - 5. The spa sounded appealing but we didn’t end up making a visit, next time for sure though!
Absolutely shocking awful experience. There was no recollection of our booking for 9 people. We were seated on low settees that were uncomfortable to eat from. The service was nonexistent very slow and no offers to refill tea pots we had to find staff to serve us. The food was a disappointment the bread on the sandwiches was dry and one sandwich was actually made from the crust slice of a loaf. There were ants running across our tablecloth and fruit flies in the room.We asked to see a manger which took 30mins he was extremely rude and did not want to hear our complaints. Eventually he agreed to waive the bill to his credit. The cost should have been £32 a head so we expected a much better experience from this well respected hotel. Do not go there for afternoon tea e
We stayed the night for our anniversary. It couldn't have been more perfect, beautiful hotel, lovely staff, room and dinner were amazing!! We will definitely be returning. Thank you to the staff for making our anniversary one to remember!
I booked in for 1 night for a relaxing break with my sister and I have already booked my next stay for early next year!! I cannot fault this place. The staff are so friendly and helpful, they go out of their way to assist you and think ahead to cater for your needs. We were greeted in reception upon arrival by helpful and smiley staff which was A great first impression. We had a deluxe mansion house room, and both the bedroom and bathroom were a generous size. The room was newly refurbished and modern and had a homely feel. We ate at the Grill restaurant and had steak and cod, both dishes were excellent, as were all the courses. We had pre and post dinner drinks at the cocktail bar which had a nice atmosphere. We booked in for a massage at Eden spa on both days, this is highly recommended, the spa is lovely. Make sure you book in advance any treatments and also book the wet spa as it's very popular and worth a visit. If you are a family I have been advised Down Hall are building a play area for children which should be completed in December sometime.
I stayed for 1 night with my sister. The hotel exceeded my expectations across the board. A huge plus point for me was the standard of service - staff were so helpful and the hotel very much had a family feel to it. Food was great, rooms were great as was the spa. Do book treatments in advance of your stay plus the 2 hour stay in the relaxation area. The hotel are working on building a large outside play area which will be invaluable for families. I have already booked to come back in February.
Arrived on Friday for an overnight stay with my best mate. We were able to check in early and explore the grounds ahead of our overnight package. Lovely room. Large bathroom with beautiful views plus a bottle of chilled champagne! All lovely! Room recently refurbished and could hardly fault (2 lights didnt work but this didnt spoil the stay). A cheeky glass of wine in the Cocktail bar and then off to the Spa for our treatments. Staff were lovely and couldnt have been more pleasant. Spa was a little small and wetroom was far too hot but treatments and lighting in rooms was very calming! Dinner was lovely and part if our package although i upgraded to the ribeye which was pricey but very nice. Next day was a lovely all you can eat breakfast, staff were a little miserable compared to how lovely they were on the Friday but maybe it was just Saturday blues 😁 overall my friend and i had a lovely stay and we would most certainly return x
Stayed at Down Hall for 1 night check in was ok reception was not very friendly. There was 2 parties going on that night but our room was away from it which made me happy as i am a very light sleeper. The room itself was spacious and tidy with a large bathroom. Overall I will go back again.
What a beautiful setting and building. Reception staff were welcoming and helpful. The bedroom was beautiful and spotless with everything you need. Bed was very comfortable, we slept well. A lovely treatment in the spa, very relaxing time. Unfortunately we felt the dining experience was not good. Not a lot of choice on menu and very expensive for the quality of food. We were disappointed with the service and felt that we were not getting the four star treatment. No table linen, staff reaching over us with plates, actually asked if we just wanted the wine pouring instead of tasting it. Portions were small epecially the cheese selection which was £8 for three tiny pieces of cheese. Breakfast selection was very good, plenty to eat. We enjoyed our stay overall and felt refreshed.
Spent three nights here in October. Not been here for many years but still a lovely relaxing place Beautiful views over the well kept gardens.lots of conferences going on and a wedding while we were there but hotel so large could always find a tranquil area in lounges to read and generally relax.Room very spacious/bed comfy/ bathroom shower excellent/maid service good/ robes in room / tea and coffee facilities replenished daily. Breakfast very nice (although no kippers!) Will have them next time.Had a massage each in the Eden spa very nice.We paid 20 pound each for 2 hours in the spa on two occasions to use hydro pool /sauna and steam room.may sound a bit expensive on top of the 120 pound massages but well worth it.in fact we were the only two people in there which was even better.will be back in new year for sure.lovely place to relax.
This beautiful country house is set in large gardens. Wonderful architecture and the newer extensions do not detract from the original building. The car park is a little distance from hotel reception but it is level access. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. Our room on the 2nd floor was very spacious and comfortable. Plenty of storage and socket outlets. Wi if reception was very poor in the room which was unfortunate. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. I used the sauna. It was part of the gym area. One changing room and the shower was in the single loo which wasn't ideal nor was having to go into the gym to get a drink of water during my sauna use. Plenty of towels available though. Just to confirm there is no swimming pool. Some fellow guests were expecting one claiming they had seen it on the website - I hadn't. The restaurant we used for our evening meal was a little strange in that it felt a bit like a cordoned off area in a hallway. That became of little importance when we ate. The food was superb. Small portions albeit we felt they were sufficient given the quality and intensity of the flavours. It was the best meal we have eaten at a restaurant for a very long time. I had a smoked goats cheese starter and hubby had plaice. I had cod for my main and he had lamb. Mouthwatering. We were looked after both in the bar and restaurant by George who was excellent. We enjoyed a couple of cocktails in the bar. Service was a bit slow from George's colleague but the staff were friendly and engaging. Prices are on par with a 4 star country hotel. We were a little disappointed with breakfast - tinned fruit rather than fresh, food not as hot as we would like it and pretty awful decaf coffee but maybe we are a bit picky about these things as others were tucking in. We would certainly stay again and are thinking of treating my parents to an afternoon tea here.
