G&V Royal Mile Hotel Edinburgh5.0 out of 5.0

We arrived after a long flight from Denver and Detroit (via Newark), tired but very excited. Our group of weary travelers included my 69 and 75 year old parents, myself and my 18 year old son. We were greeted by stylishly kilt clad bellmen and escorted to check-in. While our rooms were not quite yet ready, we were told that every effort would be made to get them ready ASAP, our bags were taken and we were given advice as to where to go for lunch. This hotel could not be any more perfectly situated. It is literally steps away from everything on the Royal Mile. We strolled around a bit, had lunch and returned to find our rooms not quite ready but did not have to wait long. The rooms themselves are inherently hip. If you are looking for old school and are offended by the modern, this might not be the place for you but on a long trip I find that a mix of old and new is refreshing. The rooms are not huge but are wonderfully comfortable and the shower was absolutely amazing. We had one dinner at the hotel restaurant and it was incredible. That night my son was too beat up with jet lag to make it down to dinner with us oldsters and we ordered him a room service pizza which arrived extremely quickly and was not only affordable but quite tasty! The included breakfast every morning was great. Seems fairly typical in Ireland and Scotland to have a breakfast buffet along with an included breakfast entree. Service was awesome. Highly recommend.
Excellent. We chose this hotel because of its position and the fact that it offers parking - although at a fairly hefty additional price. The hotel is clean, modern, quiet and has every facility in the room although the deluxe room we stayed in had a shower but no bath. The hotel met every possible need and we will definitely return next time we visit Edinburgh. The offering at breakfast was more than adequate with a choice of hot cooked breakfast as well as an extensive cold buffet incorporating fresh cold fish, meats and cheeses as well as bread, pastries, fruit and cereal. Service at breakfast was marred by one or two poorly trained staff members and a lack of overall supervision. Standing at the buffet a waiter reached in front of me to grab a milk jug totally oblivious to my presence. Several dishes with fruits were left empty for some time and dirty plates sat. Coffee was served for one in a huge teapot and the identical teapot was filled brim full with water but only two tea bags (for 3 persons) leading to ultra weak tea! We were offered hot milk with tea (not how tea is taken in Scotland or anywhere in the UK). When I asked if my kipper would come with brown toast and butter the waiter’s response was that he would see what he could do! This is a 5 star hotel with 3 star service because of a lack of training and at times insufficient staffing. We found similar in the bar at night where the staff were too busy chatting to see that we wanted to settle our bill.
At half the price it would still not have been value for money. Initial room provided was for disabled with no notification to us. Rooms small and nowhere to put things. Air conditioning cancelled every time you left the room.
The Italian restaurant @ G& V Royal mile Hotel is outstanding. It's a huge restaurant and prior booking is not required. Food is very fresh and tasty. Some of the items are new. Presentation is very good. Staff are very friendly & helpful
I stayed here for 2 nights recently, my first time in this part of Edinburgh, on a business trip. As hotels go, I was pretty impressed, from the complimentary gin & tonic I was offered at checkin, to the Nespresso machine in the room. Lots of nice touches, quite modern looking, very clean and comfortable - I couldn't find fault to be honest. Breakfast was included in my rate so I was happy to take advantage. Good buffet selection + menu hot stuff. I would thoroughly recommend the poached eggs with smoked salmon - delicious! As usual I will take issue with the inability to get a decent cup of tea in most hotels including this one - put 2 bags in the pot or at least offer an extra one! Reception staff were very nice and very efficient, especially at checkout (which is important when you're there on business). Would love to stay again.
This hotel has the premiere location for Edinburgh travel. BUT it's the staff that puts this hotel over the top. They could not have been more helpful or accommodating. They made us feel so special. We asked for a lot and with a smile they delivered. We don't normally eat in hotel restaurants but upon returning from 3 day tour were caught short and agreed to try hotel restaurant. Wow truly excellent Italian food with the same first class staff. Next trip to Edinburgh we are definitely coming back
A great location, just off the beaten path. Very close to the Castle as well. Loved the décor, quiet rooms, amazing breakfasts and the amazing décor in the dining area as well. The staff are very helpful, fast, courteous. Highly recommend this hotel and I like things nice when I travel, so this was perfect ;)
This is a great little boutique hotel located a few steps from the royal mile. The rooms are modern and clean. You are close to the hustle and bustle of High St but it is quiet and you can get restful sleep. The location couldn't be better as everything was in walking distance. We took the airlink bus to weaverly and walked up to the hotel. It was only about 10 min (going to the hotel was uphill, but not awful- just something to keep in mind). The hotel staff was great. Dermit checked us in and out. He was pleasant and very helpful with any questions we had. Katherine was great. Our visit overlapped with a bank holiday and she went above and beyond to try and find us a day tour. In the end it didn't pan out but she did give us tips to get to Roslyn Chapel and for other activities. It was refreshing to stay in a place where they truly wanted you to not only enjoy your stay at the hotel but also in the city. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in Edinburgh.
My wife and I brought both sets of parents along on a road trip around Scotland last week. We started with 2 nights in Edinburgh at the G&V. What a wonderful find! When you walk in, the lobby dazzles with a feeling of modern luxury. Our rooms were comfortable with beautiful views of the city. The location in the center of the Royal Mile could not be more perfect for exploring Edinburgh by foot. The concierge recommended excellent food and drink recommendations. We dined at the restaurant and it was delicious. Will be back!
This contemporary hotel is the only 5 star hotel on the Royal Mile. The rooms are a bit tight but very elegant. They have wood floors and beautifully tiled bathrooms. The tile floor in the bathroom is heated. It's quiet for a large hotel. The staff is very friendly and fulfilled every request. The breakfast buffet is very good and you can also order from the menu. There's everything from omelets to croissants to smoked fish to fruit and yogurt. You can easily walk the Royal Mile from here. The Edinburgh Castle is at one end of the Mile and Holyrood Palace is at the other. Arthur's seat is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel.
