Cork When to Go

Cork City sits near the southern tip of Ireland. It's built on the River Lee, at the base of Cork Harbour, which feeds out to the Atlantic Ocean.

It has a mild, fairly constant climate, with moderate temperatures year-round. Precipitation off of the ocean brings a fair amount of fog and rain to the city. On average, Cork City sees about 150 rainy days a year, with 100 days of fog each year, usually in the morning and in winter. Snowfall  is rare, due to mild winter temperatures. In January, for instance, temperatures range between 46 and 37 chilly degrees, but not freezing. January and December see the most precipitation of the year, averaging just about five and a half inches of rain each.

Things dry out and warm up a bit in the summertime. In July, temperatures average between 65 and 52 degrees, and there is only an average of 2.6 inches of rainfall. This pleasant stretch of weather also coincides with Ireland's high tourist season, which lasts from June through August. If you visit during this time, be sure to book accommodations in advance.

If you want to avoid crowds, but still enjoy dry, warm days, consider visiting in the springtime or fall. May, for instance, sees average temperatures between 57 and 44 degrees, with just 3.3 average inches of rain. In September, temperatures range between 61 and 49 degrees, with a rainfall average of 3.8 inches. Autumn is also when the city hosts its popular Cork Jazz Festival, in October.
