Located in the Cannonborough-Elliottborough neighborhood of downtown Charleston near Upper King Street restaurants, shopping and nightlife, Gertie's Downtown is a two story Charleston Single home that's just a short walk, bike or cab ride to all the action in downtown Charleston. Gertie's Downtown serves as a terrific home base from which you can launch your Charleston adventures. The home's layout, with the living room, kitchen and piazza on the first floor and the two bedrooms, two bathrooms and another piazza on the second floor, provide space for you and your guests to either interact together or retreat into separate spaces on your own.
Built in 1852, Gertie's Downtown is a grand ole dame of a home that oozes character & charm. While the home does have many architectural features you'd expect to find in a home of this age (like old windows, doors & bricks for the non-functioning fireplaces) and is located near the Crosstown highway (which can be noisy during the day & night), it has several modern features like its beautifully renovated kitchen and new flooring throughout the ground floor. The nightly rental rate reflects the older nature of this home. We do allow small dogs under 40 lbs at this home. Please note that there is no dedicated off-street parking for this home.

With close proximity to upper King Street and the Crosstown (Septima P. Clark Parkway), the location of this home enables guests to walk to restaurants, shops & other cultural delights and provides quick road access to Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, all local beaches, Charleston County parks, historic plantation homes along the Ashley River and other local attractions. There are a lot of new local restaurants -- as well as all the offerings of Upper King Street -- within a couple of minutes stroll from Murphy on St. Philip. With D'Allesandros Pizza (a local pizza institution), Brown's Court Bakery (amazing breads & pastries) and the Ordinary (high end oyster & seafood restaurant) located just a couple of blocks away, Gertie's Downtown guests have many unique local food options to explore. Walk to Barsa for some tapas or visit the Daily for some coffee or locally made kombucha!
The home is located in a very friendly neighborhood which is undergoing vibrant growth and change, as is much of Charleston. This is the best neighborhood in Charleston if you are looking to be steps away from King Street and experience the area as a local in a transitional neighborhood among young professionals, students and longtime local families. All the neighbors are very nice and welcoming. The diversity and richness of history in the Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighborhood makes this part of town desirable to locals and visitors alike. Gertie's Downtown is perfect for folks who enjoy a diverse, vibrant and eclectic neighborhood where you can watch the reinvestment & revitalization in old historic properties going on in real time. Parts of the neighborhood might still look a bit rough but it is safe.
We are close to the crosstown parkway, which may impact light sleepers with the highway traffic noises. There is also construction in the street which is almost complete but may result in additional noise during the day.

Sleepless in Charleston!!
The traffic noise was horrendous, could hear every vehicle all night long like a motor speedway. Sirens exacerbated the issue all night long with the hospital so close. It was so bad we cut our vacation short by 3 nights with no consideration for a refund. We are used to Washington, DC traffic. Also had homeless rummaging through trash in the daytime and asking for money.

Very quaint but could use a couple updates.
The house was well stocked and had everything we could possibly imagine! The wine refrigerator was a great surprise. The location was a fantastic gateway to the places that we wanted to go to as we were right off King Street. Plus, our hosts generously gave us a bottle of wine with key lime cookies. The things that I would change is with the upstairs being hotter than downstairs, you don’t need polyester sheets. Also, the main bathroom drain is clogged. Finally, the front door has a gap at the bottom that was letting in the cold air. I don’t know much about heating and air, but I wonder if the system was battling the cold downstairs to make it warm upstairs. Overall, it was a pleasant experience staying at Gertie’s downtown and I would book it again.

Great location and home overall! The house is definitely older and you can hear the freeway and neighbors pretty loudly, but that definitely did not ruin our stay. Host was very communicative, and the house had great historic charm!

Our group of 3 was very happy with our stay at the house. We would boom again! Plenty to do within a walking distance or short drive / uber. The street was nice and safe, very pleasant neighborhood. The communication with the host was easy and they sent all of the information we needed.

Great quick getaway!
Overall, this place was exactly what we needed! It was close to everywhere we needed to go and short uber/lyft trips away from downtown and isle of palms. There was plenty to see just around the corner with little shops and restaurants! I would stay again.

We loved Gertie’s!
Great location, we were minutes walk from upper king street, which was ideal for us with all the bars and restaurants!
The property is very charming and was perfect for a quick girls trip.
The hosts very SUPER fast to communicate.
We wish there was more toilet paper provided and more chairs on the upper piazza but other than that it was perfect for us.

Great place and great location
I went to Charleston to celebrate my nephew for his graduation. Great place so we could each have our own bedroom and bathroom. Centrally located to everything and walking distance to all the great spots. Be sure to have parking scoped out as they are clear - no off street parking and it is a bit difficult to find.

A few things to be aware of
The host was excellent, available and informative. The location and cleanliness were also excellent. Prospective renters should be aware of a couple of drawbacks.
The house is difficult for older users. Only 1 of the two bedrooms has an en suite bathroom. The other has no closet and the bathroom is up another set of stairs and is tiny. Both bathrooms are upstairs and the stairs are a bit steep. The kitchen "table" consists of two IKEA rolling counters. The wheels do not seem to lock so they move a lot.
The two piazzas are lovely but there is no furniture so they really can't be enjoyed.
Compared to other properties I have rented the supplies )(staples, toilet paper) are extremely limited. Most hosts provide at least a starter coffee setup but this one does not. Kitchen staples (sugar, flour,coffee filters) are not supplied.
We enjoyed our stay and Charleston is a beautiful city. I suggest the host review the stocking of staples. Especially annoying is the rationing of toilet paper.

Check in was easy and location at top of King Street made walking downtown easy. Construction next door was noisy wake up call but we were gone most days. No on street parking was not issue with tip of parking under overpass close by for free. Toaster oven should be replaced and more tp should be provided as a general convenience.

Parking situation was less than convenient but normal for downtown Charleston. Traffic noise was a little bit annoying. Location is within walking distance of pretty much everything so that was nice. There was a situation that required the police to remove a person from the street causing a disturbance. The beds were not the most comfortable. The construction on the neighboring houses provided early unwelcome alarms.

Let me start by saying the rental company is great at communication and know their properties; however, this property didn’t seem ready for renting. The air was *off* on arrival, the wifi was spotty, and there is no parking for this unit. The air was fixed once we contacted the management but it was suffocating in the southern heat. The location is prime to King Street but also right near the highway so you hear traffic all day and night.
Overall, it was convenient to downtown Charleston/Mount Pleasant/ surrounding areas but needs a little updating before being a 5 star property.
