Beach District

The shoreline is where most of Carolina Beach’s action happens. This is where you’ll find the boardwalk, marina and fishing center, along with a Ferris wheel, arcades, surf shops, restaurants and a host of activities on and off the water for all ages. Several of the city’s popular restaurants sit along the shoreline, including Olde Salty, the Surfside Bar and Restaurant and the Silver Dollar.

Many community events take place in this area, including the annual Seafood Blues and Jazz Festival and the Island of Lights Christmas parade. At Freeman Park, located in an undeveloped area on the northern part of the island, you can walk along the beach as far as the inlet at Masonboro Island.

The Savannah Inn (thesavannahinn.com) offers 22 waterfront guest rooms, each with its own private balcony, as well as an in-ground pool with a sundeck and covered pavilion. The inn is within walking distance of several area restaurants, including Blackthorn’s and the Gulfstream. Room rates start at $115 per night.

The Courtyard by Marriott (courtyardcarolinabeach.com) is just steps from the boardwalk and the beach and is within walking distance of the marina and Carolina Beach Lake Park. The hotel’s newly renovated rooms and suites feature private balconies and expansive ocean views. Guests can take advantage of the indoor and outdoor pools, the SeaSide Bistro, a Starbucks, an on-site fitness center and a whirlpool. Room rates start at $89 per night.

Other waterfront hotels include the SeaWitch Motel (seawitchcafeandtikibar.com), the Dolphin Lane Motel (dolphinlane.com), the Beacon House (beaconhouseinnb-b.com) and the Beach House Inn and Suites (beachhouseinnandsuites.com).

Downtown Area

The downtown area sits inland from the beach, far enough to avoid the crowds but close enough to allow you to smell the fresh sea air. In addition to theaters, shops and restaurants, the inland area hosts a seasonal farmers’ market, several small marathons and a variety of other community events.

The Microtel Inn and Suites by Wyndham (microtelinn.com) offers clean, affordable lodging just a short drive to the beach. It’s located within walking distance of a miniature golf facility, as well as Bowman’s Seafood Restaurant and the Deck House. Room rates start at $47 per night.

The Drifters Reef Motel (driftersreef.com) offers family fun away from the crowds. Enjoy a cocktail at the Lazy Pirate Sports Bar and Grille, have a go-kart race with your kids at Slicker’s Raceway or soak up the sun by the motel’s large outdoor pool. The motel offers standard rooms, double suites and two-bedroom apartment rental units. Rooms start at $39 per night.
