Zen Retreat was as described and pictured. The location was perfect for morning walks on the beach. Very clean. The beds were comfortable. Had all the amenities we needed. We did not prepare big meals; made light breakfasts and sandwiches for lunch. Suggestion for room without en suite bathroom - use smaller-sized nightstands to give more room around the bed closest to the exterior wall. We rented a car which allowed us to explore San Diego and that we did. We had 1 day of off and on rain but that did not stop us. We went to the Birch Aquarium and La Jolla cove. The aquarium exhibits and demonstrations were excellent. Two places not heard of but worth seeing - Craftsman Museum (free) and San Luis Rey Mission (owner told us it was a must see). There are a multitude of fascinating displays at the Craftsman. The docents are eager to share information and point out the unique features. You can easily spend a day at the museum The California mission dates back to the 1700's and was one of the more prosperous missions of the time. The docent led tours are fabulous in presenting the history, and highlighting the features and attractions. We also went to the SD zoo, Coronado Island, Little Italy, the Old Town Historic Park and Balboa Park. We loved SD and the weather. We would definitely come back again and stay at the Zen Retreat.
