Despite representing ninety-nine percent of the state’s area, upstate New York is one of the most consistently underappreciated regions in the entire United States. Start with the most alluring elements of the great outdoors, add the convenience and cultural benefits of urban lifestyle, and you quickly realize what makes the cities of upstate New York such popular places to live, work, and play.
This best-of-both-worlds lifestyle is no more evident than in Rochester, New York. Ripe with museums and other arts and culture offerings, Rochester also benefits from its location on Lake Ontario’s southern shore. The sprawling beauty in and around Rochester means driving is the best way to get around, so hop in a rental car after deplaning at Greater Rochester International Airport, and enjoy all that upstate New York can offer.
Without a doubt, Rochester’s most unique attraction is The Strong National Museum of Play. Designed for families and adults alike, the colorfully-designed Strong Museum houses the National Toy Hall of Fame (2016 inductees were Fisher-Price’s Little People, Dungeons & Dragons and the swing), a massive pinball section, an outdoor park with giant toy sculptures, and its very own Wegmans, upstate New York’s grocery store known for their phenomenal subs.
For a very different museum but one that is equally worth the visit, check out the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House. As the name suggests, the Museum is housed in the former home of the famous civil rights leader, which is also the site of her infamous 1872 arrest for voting. Well-preserved with many of Ms. Anthony’s personal and family artifacts as well as general artifacts from the entire civil rights area, the Susan B. Anthony house is well worth the visit for anyone who wants a deeper perspective on an important part of American history.
Finally, you cannot leave Rochester without checking out its jaw-dropping natural beauty. The Finger Lakes region is loaded with amazing wine valleys. It was named as such for the five long and skinny lakes that mark the area. Also, check out nearby Naples or Canandaigua for vineyards curled around lakes and reservoirs that would make even the people from Napa jealous.
