As we were visiting our daughter, who is a student in China, we booked a room for 3 people, thinking that we were getting a single room with a double bed and a fold-out cot. We were thrilled when we walked into a suite of rooms with 2 separate bedrooms and a living area! There was also a good sized refrigerator in the living room, so we were able to store yogurt for breakfast and cream for our morning coffee, as well as large bottles water bought at the convenience store across the street. We did try the breakfast in the hotel restaurant, but didn't feel it was worth the 68 rmb. There's no spa or swimming pool, but amenities such as an iron and ironing board are available on request. Toothbrushes and toothpaste are also supplied in the room, as well as a hair dryer. Few of the workers spoke English, so be sure to download a translation program before you go.
Agree with other reviews about location in Haidian district. The air conditioning works very well, much appreciated during the hot Beijing summer. The reception staff are factual only Chinese speaking! The housekeeping staff is doing an excellent job. Not an international hotel!
I don't know whether the hotel has declined or I have become grumpier, but I'm less pleased than I was when I stayed here last November. It's four stars by Chinese standards, but two or at most three by Western standards. The main problem for me was the slow and unreliable internet (free, but not worth much more than you pay for it), and it's not a good choice for tourists because it is in a relatively uninteresting part of town and no one on the property can speak more than a few words of English. All the TV options are Chinese. The air conditioning doesn't work properly in April (by the hotel's own admission) because they try to save on energy costs. The breakfast is OK and barely changes from day to day. All in all, not where you want to be in Beijing.
The hotel has the best location if you are going to Haidian District, which has a lot of universities, is close to Zhongguancun, and Shangdi Software Park. It also in close proximity two big shopping malls, subway station, and Carrefour, and heaps of restaurants. The hotel is a bit old. While its renovation is still good, the bed is terribly uncomfortable. Other than that, it's up to standard. If you don't have to stay in Haidian, you definitively would find better value hotels in other areas than this one.
From the outside, this hotel looks like a dinosaur. But it's not as bad as it looks--sort of a mediocre combination of old and new. My room was spacious, with a nice big bed and clean bathroom. You can find all sorts of packaged goods for sale in your room: condoms, cell phone power banks, socks, slippers, you name it. A little odd. Breakfast comes in the form of a Chinese-style buffet which is not bad, but certainly not great--and it doesn't change from day to day. WiFi is free but not very good, especially in the evening. This is a problem throughout Beijing, since their web infrastructure cannot handle the traffic. Your speed test might tell you that you have a great connection, but there will be bottlenecks further down the line, so your connection can be very slow. This hotel is not a good choice for tourists because it isn't located near any interesting sights and nobody speaks English. If you don't have a language problem and happen to need a room in the area (right next to the Modern Plaza 當代商城 shopping mall), this hotel is fine. Otherwise, there isn't much reason to stay here.
For a 4-star hotel Yanshan lacks the basic amenities any (business) traveler needs, such as reliable internet connection, help with travel arrangements, and, most importantly, hotel staff that is responsive. Despite booking a cab to take me to the airport at 5:30 in the morning, the hotel not only didn't care about the fact that the cab didn't show up at all, but also didn't bother doing anything (other than telling me to take the subway) to help me find a replacement. I almost missed my flight due to their mistake, and they were oblivious the whole time. On top of everything, the ceiling of my room started leaking on my last night and I had to deal with that myself too. In short, stay away from this hotel.
Stayed their for 4 days for a conference. Location in China's Capital. Food was good. Staff is friendly, but staff other than higher ranks and reception, can't speak proper English. The fixtures and furnishings are all from a bygone era. A good enough hotel, but not memorable. recommend for business travel, not for tourists.
I stayed at Beijing Yanshan Hotel three or four years ago and just recently made a return visit. It seems as if the hotel was wrapped in a time capsule; nothing has changed since I last stayed at the place. It's not a bad hotel; reasonably clean and functional. But the fixtures and furnishings are all from a bygone era. Service is adequate but not exceptional; food is average (disappointing within Chinese standards). Free wifi, but not fast. Location (near Renmin University) is good, but only if you need to be in this area of Beijing. All-in-all, a good enough hotel, but not memorable.
Stayed 7 nights in August. An old fashioned hotel near the Renmin University and a subway station. Room and bathroom was clean and adequate. Service was fair. A few nice restaurants at the shopping mall next to the hotel.
If I could rate the hotel based upon their star rating, I'd give them a 3.75, but not a four. Not sure what the Chinese rating system is like...Nothing wrong with their property, but it is not a western Four Star. The location is a five minute walk from Renmin Station Line 4 and a 10 minute walk to RenDa campus. There are plenty of eateries around the area as well as some high and medium prices malls. When you get off the subway, you can easily see the hotel in the skyline. The front desk was not staffed with an English speaker when I arrived at 10:30pm. It seemed to be better staffed during normal working hours. The breakfast was adequate with a decent selection even after six days. You can get made to order eggs if you can speak Mandarin otherwise it will be over easy. The Asian style breakfast is better than the western one. The rooms are clean and safe, but could use a little face lift. Shower, furniture, and carpet needs a little attention. The AC did not work! The internet sucked all around, but it seemed to work intermittently in the hotel. Seems cell phones signal was also iffy. The worst feature in the hotel was their TV system . Baffling, but it took me two days before I could look at CNN World. Bottom line, I WOULD stay there again. The negative issues were more due to expectations of a Four Star rating of the hotel, but overall seemed safe and the amenities were adequate. For the price, good value!
