A mixed bag, but a great price for the area. First, the good stuff: Old town Basel is amazing, and this hotel is just two and a half blocks from the center...or less, if you don't mind walking one block of very steep stairs. There is public transportation a block away that connects with the main SBB train station. And the room was huge, and clean, with big windows and great wifi. Now the drawbacks: we had to drag our bags through the dining room, up a flight of stairs, and back outside in the cold, before reaching an elevator to our room. The bed had one of those ikea style futon mattresses, which I find not very comfortable. And BIG SURPRISE...the church bells go off full blast right next door at 7am!!! you would think the staff would have warned us so we could have worn ear plugs, but they didn't say a word. The staff was pleasant but generally clueless, so don't rely on much help there. And worst of all, as we were leaving, the front desk girl told us breakfast was included with our stay...so we set down our bags and sat down to have a quick bite before catching the tram. Then, in the middle of eating, the dining room guy tells us the meal is NOT included, and that we have to pay 15 Swiss francs EACH. So almost $30 for my wife and I to eat some yogurt and a croissant in their austere self-serve dining buffet. Almost a third the price of the room! We were furious, and this almost ruined our stay. The hotel price and location is great, and we'd stay there again, but PLEASE LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKES, as we did.

Basically you get what you pay for. At this price, which is relatively cheap in Basel, Switzerland, this hotel is clean and comfy. It does not include breakfast, but you can get one good buffet in 16 CHF--most restaurants charge more than that. The free wifi is a big plus.

Hotel Rochat is in a great location. It is just up a hill from the marketplatz and away from any excess noise. It is directly across the street from a park and the University hospital. Some rooms have air conditioning. The rooms are a nice size with high ceilings, so you don't feel claustrophobic. The only problem I had were the beds. They were hard as rock, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.

Having never before traveled out of the United States, was quite nervous about going to another country. The Hotel Rochat staff was superb! They spoke English well enough that we could communicate effectively. The hotel was located centrally in the beautiful (but expensive) city of Basel at a very decent price. Cleanliness was top notch, excellent buffet for a very reasonable price. We loved the bells from the chuch! Felt like home with the sounds of the bells.

Hotel Rochat represents a perfect value for the money. The hotel is located in a nice side street of old Basel, just across from the University, and within walking distance to the old town and the river Rhine. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable. We used this hotel while on a business trip to Basel and were surprised how we liked it there. We strongly recommend this hotel as an alternative to the big chain business hotels.

i had a pleasant stay at the rochat hotel. the staff were super friendly and helpful, and the room was as expected.

very friendly staff, very clean rooms and awesome beds. Super cozy. The hotel is a combination of 3 buildings so we had to take go through a lot of stairs and corridors so it is not disabled friendly. Not that we needed it but I find it appropriate to write in here.

Excellent value. Ever so courteous and so clean. 2 min to Barfuesserplatz and less than 5 minutes to Spalentor. They give you a free transportation pass that is good for all buses and trams in the greater Basel area. You can even get to the airport with this if you wish. Buy the breakfast because it is a real good deal as Switzerland is very expensive. This was an amazing deal and I would recommend it and plan to stay there again when I return in 2012.

Hotel Rochat is centrally and charmingly located, spotless and had very helpful staff members. It was great for us as we have 2 children and found it difficult to find a hotel near the old town with space for two double beds in one room. Perfect!
