Quito is a beautiful city; the highest capital city in the world, its historic center holds the distinction of the being one of the first two UNESCO World Heritage Sites ever declared. Visitors can enjoy terrace cafes, rich architecture, museums, theaters and now fewer than 40 churches, many of which offer guided tours.
The northern sector of Quito features high class restaurants like Theatrum, as well as some museums and galleries. Don't miss the renowned Museo del Banco Central, which boasts many famous pieces. To the north, the excellent Museo Mindalae is also well worth a visit, telling the story of Ecuador's rich cultural diversity.
Children will love the Yaku Parque-Museo del Agua with its interactive water based activities, and the MIC, an interactive science museum.
Ecuador's principal airport lies around ten miles from the capital city Quito. Following your flight into Mariscal Sucre Airport (UIO), it takes an hour to reach Quito; you can take the public bus to the Rio Coca terminal, or you can opt for a fixed fare taxi instead.
The Mitad del Mundo monument doesn't actually mark the equator, which is 500 feet away, but The Intinan Solar Museum next door does offer some fascinating equator based tricks.
