Many visitors fly to Sao Paulo on business, but increasingly the city is becoming a tourist destination in its own right, fueled by a thriving fashion and arts scene.
In the city, Avenida Paulista is a must-visit, lined with shops and malls. Much of Sao Paulo is very urban in look, but one of the most attractive spots is Ibirapuera Park in the south central area. The park is packed with museums, and hosts many cultural events, as well as being one of the city's greenest lungs.
The Sao Paulo Zoo and the Aquarium, both in the south east of the city, are popular with families; another good family-friendly option is the observation deck at the top of the Banespa Tower.
Flights into Sao Paulo/Guarulhos-Governador Andre Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) arrive some 25 miles from the city center. The major Brazilian airlines offer free their passengers free shuttle transportation, or you can take an ordinary shuttle bus.
Sao Paulo Carnevale takes place in February, the city is packed at this time, and prices will rise. Congestion means that the journey from the airport to the city can take as long as three hours, so allow plenty of time.
