Things to see in Amman
Amman, Jordan's capital, is undergoing rapid modernization, but still retains its Middle Eastern charm. To explore truly explore old Amman, head to Balad, the central downtown district, where you will find souqs, street vendors and very old buildings.
The citadel, in the center of the city, is home to the ruins of the Roman Temple of Hercules, and the Archaeological Museum.

Amman is a good base from which to visit the Dead Sea - you can be there within the hour and view or possibly climb the great Mount Nebo along the way.
If you're heading to Petra, be prepared for a long but straightforward drive from the airport - it will take you 4 hours, but it's signed in English all the way.
