History of Des Moines International Airport

There were several small airports located throughout Des Moines in the early 1920s which provided general aviation and airmail.

In 1929, a law was passed in the state that allowed cities to sell bonds in order to build municipal airports. While more than 80 different sites were considered, the final decision was made to build on 160 acres of farmland just south of Des Moines.

Construction on Des Moines International Airport (DSM) was completed in 1933, numerous expansions and improvements have been made over the years to make the airport the successful and necessary facility it is today.
