This is best hotel to stay if you are trying to board Princess Cruise at Osanbashi Pier in Yokohama. Very convenient for accessibility even from the Haneda Airpot. Hotel New Grand is located across the road to Yamashita Park. Possible to walk to Osanbashi Pier, or just take a taxi for 720 Yen. Early morning we loved to see the Princess Diamond sailing in about 6:00AM. This is our third trip on Princess Diamond for Japan cruises. Each trip watching the beauty sailing into the port with the rising Sun Hotel New Grand added colours and joy to our journey. The Reception staff speaks good English, helpful and friendly. They made us feel at home, as this was our first trip to Yokohama. Paid US$300/night for a moderate room through internet booking. This is the upper class hotel. 4 stars. Clean and neat. Yohohama Chinatown is about 5 minutes walk, Very active and vibrant with Chinese culture setting. We had our dinners here. A number of souvenirs shops to rejuvenate your evening stroll. From Haneda International Airport, we took a public bus 720Yen, that brought us to Yamshita Park bus stop. Across the road is Hotel New Grand. So convenient and a lot of savings made as compared taking a taxi from Haneda. On your arrival just enquire at bus counter about this trip, or the tourist information would be able to assist you. We had a pleasant journey and cruise. Well spent!
Two stars only for the view, big room and accessibility to metro station...rest is as follows: - everything is very expensive - worst part is the authorisation amount they deduct at check-in i.e. 100000 yen which will be credited back only after 10 days of check out.... - in my case, I got the credit after 10 days and the same day there was an unauthorised transaction of 64000 yen was made...I’m still waiting for the refund - if you don’t have a smoking room, be ready to walk to the corner of level-1 - breakfast is around 4000 yen and a bucket of ice would cost you 600 yen...they say we do not provide free ice (usually even the small hotels have an ice dispenser on each floor) Not worth staying !!
Hotel located right beside Yamashita park which beside the shore and 2 blocks away from China town. Receptionists are very polite, professional and friendly. I got a room has both ocean and city view and size is perfect, sitting in the sofa and watch the night light or morning sunrise was so enjoyable. The lobby is not big but very clean and all staffs always smile and greet you all the time, highly recommend.
We stayed here for two nights prior to going on a cruise. The hotel is on two sites either side of a smallish road. It is clean, tidy and comfortable. our room, in the tower, looked out over the harbour and we could see our cruise ship arrive about half a mile away. The room was a little tired but perfectly clean and serviceable. We used public transport (metro train) to go into Tokyo for the day. The station is a 5 minute walk away (called Motomachi-Chukagai). Trains are frequent and fast - just make sure you catch an express rather than one that stops everywhere. Into mid-town Tokyo was about 25 minutes. Big bonus was the 10 minute walk to Osanbashi cruise terminal. Breakfast at the hotel catered for Eastern and Western tastes and was plentiful if a little expensive. Staff at the hotel were friendly and helpful and we really enjoyed our stay.
Note that I traveled with my folks - both senior citizens and have limited walking patience so everything needed to be simple and easy. Before the trip, I already informed the hotel of the above plus an extra bed for myself. I was glad to hear that the hotel offers triple sharing and that the room was really designed for that as what I was told. They sent me detailed instructions and this was very important for someone who has never been to Japan yet and have to direct two other people. Upon arriving Yokohama, transportation to the hotel was so easy! We took the bus from the airport with the bus people helping us out on which bus and which bus ticket to get. I appreciated that the hotel gave me specific instructions to tell the bus company and even sent me photos of the entrance of the building, etc. See their instructions below:- "Picture of Bus stop “Yamashita Park” 山下公園前 After getting off, if you look on your left you will see the Hotel New Grand 18 story Tower building. Our front desk is located in this building. It is just less than a minute away from the bus stop. " Check-in was a breeze and we got our luggages immediately and without any problems. Rooms were spacious for the triple sharing and view was awesome! I put in our room request early so it would really help them if you do that also upon booking. I appreciate that the bathroom toilet is separate from the wash basin so that two people do not need to be cramped in one room while the other can do their thing in peace. Semi open bathroom if you can call it. Hot pot with tea and some instant coffee were provided that we appreciate also. TV stations can be more but heck, we stayed out more than watch TV. Everyone at the concierge desk helped us get to Kamo Soccer Shop and the Ramen Museum. They were very patient in explaining to us twice/thrice due to some language barrier but all were great! We couldn't thank them enough since we arrived in the afternoon and got everything done for dinner at the Museum, which was a wonderful experience to do. Go eat breakfast at Eggs N Things (a breakfast franchise from Hawaii). Their coffee was great! The store opens alittle later but worth it! Do get their burger and pancakes! There is a McDonald's store after it. Check-out was easy and convenient since they seem to be efficient at it. The hotel may look dated but everything was clean and they seem to be updated in amenities etc. I will book them again if we do go to Yokohama again...overall a wonderful experience and their Certificate of Excellence is a well-deserved one! Keep up the great work!!
We wanted a hotel with easy access to Yokohama cruise port and to the station. We also wanted a smaller more intimate hotel than many in Japan which are huge! The New Grand was perfect in every way. On arrival the welcome was genuine from all the staff and the manager. Our room was ready. Fantastic view over the sea front. Free Wifi was a nice extra. Spotlessly clean, nice bathroom amenities, tea and coffee. The restaurants we tried were excellent although a little expensive. Lovely historic features. Very nice cocktail bar which also serves food and snacks. Location is excellent. A short stroll to the station and a very short cab ride to the cruiseport. China town is also a short stroll. The hotel staff truly make your stay. Extremely helpful and friendly they are an absolute credit to the hotel. They helped us with guidance on how to get to Kamakura by train and gave us information about other places we wanted to visit. The business lounge is more of a meeting room with coffee than other business lounges we have enjoyed in other parts of the world. It was useful for printing out boarding passes etc. though.
I was getting off the boat and had to wait around for about ten hours so I decided to book a room for a shower and a place to store luggage. I wanted something near to the port and not too expensive so I booked a room at the Hotel New Grand. For $84 US I got a room that had a queen and a large single bed, a view of the harbour and the park and a table to work on the computer. Having stayed in a shoe-box in Tokyo this was indeed a pleasant surprise. 300 metres from the shipping terminal, centrally located near China town, comfort and a view. The room was extremely clean and although a smoking room, I failed to notice a wiff. There is a good food restaurant and a bar downstairs, but I would eat at China town, much cheaper. This served the purpose and I can recommend their service, cleanliness and willingness to help.
We always enjoy staying at hotels that have a history. General MacArthur and a host of dignitaries have enjoyed staying at the New Grand. We stayed in the new wing with great views of the harbor and the expansive parks that runs along the bay. Our room was large by Japanese standards, but I heard other folks complain about the size of their room. I would suggest upgrading to one that suits your needs. They were spotless, modern and comfortable. The staff is first rate, friendly and professional. Make sure you tour the old part of the hotel, the craftsmanship and design is amazing. For cruisers, the hotel is perfect, within walking distance from the port, however, it was raining so we took a taxi which cost around 7 dollars. Chinatown is just a few blocks away and well worth the experience. Beware that some of the restaurants were tourist trap rip offs, so use TripAdvisor if you plan to eat there. There are some fine restaurants including a breakfast spot just a half a block down the street, and there's a McDonald's a block away. There's a 7-11 and a Lawson's two blocks away to get wine and other goodies. Use the 7-11's ATM for changing your money to Yen, if you use a credit union card there is no ATM fees and a nominal fee from your bank -- our international charges were less than $3 on a $100 transaction. Taxis are relatively cheap, and the drivers are honest and are on meter, no tipping. We used a taxi to get to our hotel in Tokyo after our cruise. Make sure you visit the shops just beyond the cruise terminal... lots of food and gift shops.
Hotel New Grand is the best, most convenient, friendly, and clean place to stay. The Yamashita Park is beautiful for strolling, the Harbor is right there where the cruise ships dock. Approximately $8.00 to take a cab to the ship plus tip. Chinatown is a easy walking distance from the hotel. Right up the road! The Motomachi shopping area is right next to Chinatown too. How awesome! The hotel restaurant for brunch was pricey but it was a real treat. McDonalds is next to it and also Eggs and Things. There is a supermarket around the corner for all your needs just around the corner. What more could you want?
Hotel New Grand was a beautiful hotel with excellent service. We stayed two nights and wish we could have stayed longer! We had a group of 10 people (5 rooms). The hotel made check in for our group simple after a long day of traveling. They also had wonderful restaurant recommendations and helped us with additional transportation. Strongly recommend!!
