Spacious and immaculate. Huge rooms, well done kitchen, fabulous gas fireplace!
This property is furnished with antiques of the era and staff is here to service you as they would have done for the original castle owners.
The three bedroom lodges were spacious. The washing machines with a dryer was a plus.
We only booked one night at the Waterford Castel, and I wish we had booked more. The ferry to and from the island is quick and easy. The castle is nestled away from the car park by a grove of trees. Walking up it appears out of nowhere and is breathtaking. The large lobby with its gigantic fireplace is beautiful and filled with cozy sofas and window nooks to relax. Our room was large and beautiful with a large claw foot tub. The Fitzgerald bar was a great place to end our night. And breakfast was amazing the next morning in the glassed in dining room. There were some odd knocks and bangs throughout the night but I chalked it up to the fact that it was a castle or the ghost of Mary Fitzgerald. Absolutely would stay again.
The castle was full so we were given one if the 'cottages' nearby, whuch turned out to be a 3 bed, 3.5 bath townhouse. There were two couples, so we could have shared a single cottage had we known. The grounds are lovely, the service was great, and it was unique to have to take a ferry to get onto the property. The ferry is free and runs every 15 minutes. Breakfast buffet was wonderful too. All in all a really nice place to stay.
We didn't stay in the castle itself. We stayed in the lodges, which were actually 3 bedroom townhouses complete with full kitchen and laundry. They were absolutely beautiful! Unfortunately, we were only there for one night.
Be aware of 5 euros charge for the ferry getting in and out of the island.
The setting at Waterford Castle is amazing. The scenic walks and grounds were amazing. There were many signs and easy to follow paths.
Waterford Castle is small and charming, and the lovely room we had was huge with a canopy bed and view of the trees and the resident hawk. However, I was surprised at the worn-down condition of the room and its furnishings (threadbare seat cushions splitting at the seams, many tiles cracked and loose in the bathroom). In addition, there were dirty cobwebs in the windows and a wall lamp, and the bathroom was not set up properly (empty containers that should have held Q-tips or cotton balls). Because we were there only one night, and in general the room felt clean, I did not raise the issues to staff (who were all very nice). That being said, I would stay at the castle again because it was so charming and felt like such a treat. The breakfast rooms were beautiful and breakfast was especially nice. We didn't have directions and were lucky to have found the castle on our first attempt. It is on its own island that you reach via a vehicle ferry pulled on winches, which simply goes back and forth to the mainland. To reach the ferry, we simply drove south from downtown Waterford until we saw a sign pointing left to Waterford Castle. It did feel like an adventure.
