Aloha! E komo mai. Welcome to Fern Cottage. Located across from Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our fully permitted house your home away from home during your next visit.

Like our other highly reviewed property (VRBO #403855), we have attempted to make Fern Cottage a perfect retreat for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the peaceful Volcano lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ʻōhi'a rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.

Our house is a cozy but spacious 900 sq ft 2 bed/1 bath house that sleeps 2-5 people comfortably. The high vaulted pine ceiling and wood floors naturally juxtapose with the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the numerous large windows throughout the house. A spacious covered half wrap-around deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides an excellent location to take in the views of the surrounding forest on our half acre property.

Both bedrooms have high-quality comfortable queen-size beds and a queen-size sleeper sofa is available to provide a third bed to accomodate your party's needs. The master bedroom has its own entry door to the covered porch. The main living/sleeping area is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.

As with our other property, we strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner Fern Cottage for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

The Fern Cottage lives up to its 9.8 rating. The beds were comfy and mattress heaters are a plus. The shower, kitchen and lanai were perfect for our short stay. Good location to VNP too. We will stay here again next year.

Wow! We loved this place. Comfortable, welcoming. Great communication with host. All amenities we needed. Volcano can be cool at night, but gas stove and heated mattresses kept us cozy. Numerous options for coffee. Enjoyed nice afternoons in rockers on the porch. Close enough to visit Park. Food options were few but very good. Great location for exploring Volcano National Park. Private location close to the park and local restaurants. Appreciated some of the little things that were provided like umbrellas that we forgot to pack, and an iPad that we used to monitor the live stream of the volcano. Lucky enough to be there for 38. We truly loved the location of this VRBO. The area is absolutely beautiful, and we especially appreciated the seclusion from the road — it felt peaceful and private. The large wrap-around deck was a highlight for us. It’s a wonderful space to relax, enjoy the views, and spend time outside.Prior to the trip communication was great. Detailed instructions on getting to, and accessing the home. All the amenities and comforts of home and very detailed instructions on how to operate everything.That said, the inside of the home could use some attention. The couches and rugs would benefit from a deep cleaning, and the refrigerator was noticeably dirty when we arrived. Overall, the space could use a more thorough cleaning to match the beauty of the setting.With some care and upkeep, this property has the potential to be an amazing stay because the location and outdoor space really are special.

Great place near the park

We really enjoyed our stay. It was quiet, clean, and comfortable. It had plenty of space for our family. The location can’t be beat. It’s a little rustic but I thought that was part of the charm. You are 5 minutes from the park so if you are there for an eruption you can’t be much closer without sleeping in the park.
