Rydges Southbank Townsville

My partner and I opted to stay at Rydges, Townsville over the New Year's Eve weekend. On the booking website it was only a few dollars less than the nearby Oaks and we chose it due to a better internet deal. We love to watch Netflix to wind down at night. The internet was amazing. Great speed and we weren't disappointed with that. The bed was incredibly cushy and comfy with clean sheets albeit a couple of drop stains which we speculated could've been either wine or blood. However upon entry to the hotel, we noticed that it seemed like it hadn't been renovated since the '90s. The elevator was old and dirty, and there appeared to be poor security with no cameras in the lift or on the floor on which we stayed. The back door entrance was propped open with no swipe card access in the elevator, allowing anyone from the public to enter the hotel floors. The carpets of the room were dusty with crumbs and the room was also poorly renovated. There was a beautifully stocked minibar however there were no complementary "tiny milks" for my coffee provided, and we had to ask for toilet paper from reception as we weren't provided any extra rolls when our rooms were serviced during our 3 night stay. There was water dripping from the air-conditioner vents causing damp carpet underneath it. And the bathroom... Paint was peeling off the walls, there was mold on the ceiling and in the corners, and there was a shower curtain which I wasn't sure was clean and it barely kept shower water from splattering all over the bathroom. I haven't been in a shower with a curtain since the early '90s at least. There was poor ventilation in the bathroom, causing it to steam up even if the water was slightly hot. While the internet and bed were redeeming factors for our stay there, we won't be staying in this hotel again unless some major renovations are done. For a Rydges hotel, I felt like the 3 star rural motels I've stayed in have provided cleaner and more luxurious rooms than this place.

Thank goodness we are only passing through and staying one night. Carpets are filthy throughout the room and all hallways, shower is cracked, drawer will nuts etc in had dead cockroaches in it and stank. I've only been in the room for an hour and felt compelled to join Tripadvisor just so I could write this. The website for this hotel says "sophistication" there is nothing sophisticated about this place, it is just lucky the beds are relatively clean or I would have walked out and demanded my money back. I took photos but phone is not working 😡

We stayed in a two bedroom self contained unit accommodation that is across the road from the Rydges hotel itself. Should you want to access Rydges you need to walk and access the secure gate. We also didn’t find other convenience stores around and drove into town. The unit has its own parking spot and secure entrance. There is a elevator to the upstairs apartments. Inside the unit each room has its own air conditioning and fan. The beds were comfortable and it was a quite spot. The decor of the unit itself is bland and drab. We noticed the walls appeared dirty, repairs had not been painted over or finished and there was slight damage to basins and tiles. The balcony is a good size, as is the unit overall and was a nice spot to retreat to. The master bedroom also had a spa bath and shower combination.

Clean and tidy rooms. A bit dated now, could do with a revamp. But friendly staff, close proximity to restaurants. Nice bar downstairs with happy hour, good after a busy day in the heat. Good for a business trip

We stayed overnight in the 2 Bed apartment. (It is in the street behind the hotel) The apartment was perfect- spacious, clean and well equipped. It would be the perfect spot for short or long stays. We had the buffet breakfast at the hotel - we thought it was great. The kids loved the pancake machine. Breakfast staff were so friendly and efficient- made the experience wonderful. We will come back. Make sure to sign up as a Rydges priority guest to get great discounts at this hotel.

Clean, super comfortable beds, friendly and helpful staff, and the pool was great for cooling down on a hot day. Close to all the good restaurants too. It was easy to get transport to and from there as well. The hotel matched the cheapest rate online, and have honoured their cheapest rate guarantee. The bathroom had seen better days but apparently they're renovating them this year, and the shower was really good anyway so it was just fine for us. Top marks for letting us have a room early, seamless check in and out. The only issue I had was with the buffet breakfast. There was no other option offered (maybe there isn't one), and for $25 per head I'd expect espresso coffee to be included, particularly considering some of the food (the bacon, sausages and hash browns especially) were pretty tough and only just warm. I'd recommend staying here for sure - it was pretty good overall.

Rydges Southbank Townsville is good for an overnight stopover. The building and rooms are in need of a refit and upgrade. Having said that, the food is good and service is always spot on. Reception is open 24/7 which is great for an early departure. Plenty of good restaurants around, great Pizza place across the road.

I have to say, when I stay at a hotel i look for a few things; cleanliness, comfy bed and block out curtains, the Rydges Townsville did not dissapoint on any of those, my stay was very comfortable and with well needed sleeps I got that too.

Can't fault my experience in any way at Rydges. Rooms were comfy and spacious and the pool area amazing. Would recommend to anyone wanting a getaway in the food and drink heart of Townsville. The slight negative was no water views but you get that everywhere else you go.

One of the worst hotels ever. The room and carpet are all mouldy. The bed and pillows have a sweaty smell. The shower is disgusting with its floor paint all cracked. The check in person was nice. Go elsewhere for a stay. Couldn't sleep at all and can't wait to get out of here.
