Great Southern Hotel Brisbane

4.0 out of 5.0

Recent guest reviews

Location was good, but overall very disappointing experience. Furniture, room setup, and carpet were old and outdated, crack in the window, and elevator carpet was covered in plastic. There was a fee for storing bags and a fee for wifi.

The Great Southern Hotel wasn't so great for me. The only thing I liked was the hotel's location-close to shopping and dining. However, the rooms turned out to be pretty old-old carpet and furniture which I didn't like and it spoiled my stay. The rooms need to be refurbished. Also, I found it ridiculous that I couldn't get a basic cutlery from the reception staff. No room service so I asked the reception staff for a cutting knife and they couldn't find one even at the breakfast/kitchen area on-site?! After 15 minutes they managed to find a weird curved serrated knife which was maybe for cheese. Seriously?! In that hotel you can't get basic cutlery such as spoon, fork, and/or cutting knife-I've never seen that in any hotel and I travel worldwide. Even the lowest star hotels have basic cutlery-it's the most basic stuff. Also, the breakfast option wasn't made with guests' comfort in mind. I wanted to buy just coffee from the coffee machine in the breakfast room but they said that I'd have to buy a coffee/toast combo for $8. Why can't they offer just coffee for people? And you know what their response was-"why don't you get your coffee next door?"!!! Way to go guys! And way to make a profit by referring your hotel guests to buy coffee elsewhere rather than from your hotel. Non-sense! Clearly they haven't considered offering flexible dining options including hot drinks to its guests but just some old beds to sleep on. Raise your standards! Won't be staying there again

The hotel is near downtown, so getting out for dinner or a beer after work was very practical. I stayed there while attending a conference in the conference center in South Bank. It was also very near to get there walking. Overall it had good value for money.

Wasn't sure where to stay in Brisbane and took a punt. The hotel felt great from the moment I fronted Reception and was greeted by two experienced and helpful staff who took the time to make me feel welcome. They gave me an orientation to the neighborhood, which proved useful, and later assisted me with some printing I required for my ongoing travel. The room was spacious and comfortable, and if anything I regretted my stay was so short. Location of the hotel is great for food, shopping and an evening out.

The Hotel was unreal the location was excellent just a 2 minute walk to the Casino beautiful river views

Staff were very helpful.hotel was very good value for money. The only downside was that they advertised free wi fi in every room. You had to get a voucher every day which allowed you three hours. Very inconvenient if you wanted three minutes in the morning and the same in the evening to check replies. System failed regularly. Easier to walk to the mall or a cafe with free wi fi.

PROS The strengths of this hotel are its location and value pricing. It's an easy walk to shopping, eateries, the bridge to South Bank, bus stops, and the casino. Our room was comfy. CONS The "cleaned" drinking glass contained remnants of my drink from the previous day. The free wifi is painfully slow and is good for only 3 contiguous hours a day, although it reportedly should last for 24 hours. Access can be renewed only once every 24 hours, so you can have free slow wifi for 3 out of 24 hours daily. The upgraded wifi access option requires a different access code daily for each of your devices (phone laptop, etc.). We explained that the free wifi didn't last for 24 hours as reported, so we received the access code without the daily $10 charge by repeatedly calling the front desk until someone answered the phone.

Enjoyed my stay at the hotel. Clean, decent sized rooms and a great central location.

The Rendezvous was perfect for a night on the town before an early morning flight. Staff were efficient and friendly in helping us into parking, internet, and a glass of local wine. The footbridge walk to South Bank for dinner was easy and scenic. Great value for a quick dip into downtown Brisbane.

Friendly Staff; Very nice room; Easy walk to attractions;

Upon arriving we asked for an upgrade and we're given a river view room with a 2+1 bed configuration on the top level. My husband was very happy with the view for photography and the location couldn't be better. Staff were friendly

Just an 'ok' hotel for the business traveler. + Nice coffee and a decent restaurant + Great location, ideal for both business and leisure - Slightly overpriced - Not many value add items (no hair dryer in bathroom, no complimentary water bottles, no business center)

great location, room was clean, double bed was broken, sloped bad, hotel staff had no help on how to get to airport, ( they said take a cab ($50.00) or train, I found a shuttle service for $20.00, neither kid a desk had a clue. Asked to recommend a restaurant, & they sent me the wrong way, guy on street knew more

Not very friendly staff at the Reception - no welcome to the Marque. As a first time stay we didn't know where restaurants, bars etc were and not offered on check-in. Had to ask where the lifts were to get to our room. Key access to room which was occupied - a little embarassing for the guest. Returned to Reception where the front desk staff mumbled 'Sorry Guys" and went on to blame another staff member. Front desk needs a shake up.

We walked alot. We have an 8 year old and a 3 year old, both of whom did great. Southbank is close by. Casino is a block away. Grab the bus to Lone Pine and hop on the ferry to get home. Rent bikes to traverse the suggested routes, or head to Chinatown. All in all great times are to be had in Brisbane.

convenient location, only 3 minutes walk to Queen st.

Visit of the city Jogging Visit of the Kangoroo park

Attended niece's wedding the area the reception was held was nice. The staff were not quite there literally and figuratively. I have travelled extensively and found this hotel (and any affiliates) I, and others, would never recommend.
