When I had booked our trip to Tokyo last year through exepedia.ca I will admit I initially chose Almond Hostel & Cafe for the price. I read as many reviews as I could before finalizing the booking, almost all of them were very positive and with very little area knowledge the location seemed favourable to me as well. After spending 10 days exploring Tokyo and riding the trains just how amazing a choice and how perfect of a location it`s in became abundantly clear. Check in is up to 01:00 as that is how late the cafe ( Which occupies the first floor ) stays open to. The second floor is co-ed ( Which is where the wife and I sayed ) and the third floor is strictly for the ladies. Access is through a keypad locked gate from the alley behind the hostel, be aware that there is a set of stars you`ll have to climb to get to your respective floor and a second keypad will let you into your communal area. Your sleeping area is approximately 6 long, 3 feet wide and 4 feet high, I didn`t measure, but, I`m 6`2`and I fit inside ok.You`ve got two hangers, a shelf, an outlet and a light, a curtain for privacy and a lockable storage space located at floor height below the bottom sleeping space. The spaces are located mostly 2 x 2 so you`ll have someone next to you and a ladder will give someone access to the space above you, no using the provided hair dryers after 23:30, there are 4 toilets and 2 showers on the co-ed floor. No drinks or food are allowed except for in the cafe. Yoyogi Hachiman and Yoyogi Koen railway stations are a mere 5 minute walk from the hostel, Shibuya and Shinjuku stations are about a 20 minute walk away as well. Yoyogi park is about an 8 minute walk away. There are many restaurants in the neighbourhood and there are 7-11`s, Lawsons, Familymarts and 2 grocery stores scattered around within as short as half-a-blocks stroll. The wife and I highly recommend to anyone that a stay here will be a great addition to any trip to Tokyo whether it`s for just one night longer!!
The area of shinjuku-shibuya is well established as the most popular place to stay while in Tokyo. Being in the cultural centre of West Tokyo with a vibrant nightlife nearby, prices are much higher for accomodation in this area. Almond hostel seemed like a budget solution, but actually surprised us with excellence. An approachable, kind staff, daily cleaning services and nice comfortable beds. Would definitely stay again!
5 mins walking distance from Yoyogi Hachiman station, connecting to all traim lines & JR. Also very close to lots of restaurants & a few bars. Neat bunks, clean common facilities. Great value for money, stayed 3 nights. Friendly, helpful guys at the front desk.
Stayed in this hostel and loved it! The neighborhood was nice. It's near the train station, and convenience stores and quite a nice walk with lots of nice shops on the way to Shibuya center. It'll take you probably 25 minutes from the hostel to Shibuya center which is not bad in my opinion, esp. if you like walking. I stayed in this hostel cos I like to drink and since trains usually close at 1 AM, I can get drinks in Shibuya after hours and just walk home if I wanted to. It was convenient. One time I stayed at the cafe for a nightcap and guests from the hostel and the people working at the hostel were hanging about and they invited me to join in and we stayed until 5 AM which is great. The coffee too is good, in case you're wondering! There's no elevator which is a bummer but the staff was nice enough to carry my heavy luggage 3 flights of stairs. The bunk was spacious (I'm Asian petite), it has hangers and also a big storage area where you can even lock your luggage if needed. Didn't have space to hang my towel to dry, though, but I managed. The bathroom is on the same floor which is convenient. Has two showers and a lot 3-4 toilet cubicles. It's pretty quiet when I was there, so no problem with noise and that. It's clean, too, and the amenities in the bathroom are alright. Stayed there during the rainy season and they were offering free umbrellas to borrow! And as a smoker, it was convenient that they have a smoking area just below the hostel. Overall, 4/5 for sure. Will definitely stay and recommend this place again in the future!
I stayed for 4 nights and it was a good basic hostel. The ground floor is a simple cafe. The 2nd and 3rd floors are dorms with enclosed bunk beds. You get a numeric pin code to enter, and it feels very safe. The dorms are basic, thin foam mattress (which was comfortable enough for me). There are storage bins built into the bunk beds which you can lock, which is a nice feature. There were 4 toilet stalls and 2 shower stalls on my floor. While I was there everyone was coming and going at different times, so I never had to wait to use the facilities. Sounds echos so it can be a little noisy during the day when people are moving around, at night people were quiet (I’m sure that’ll depend on other guests during your stay) and with the heavy curtain pulled on my bunk bed I slept fine. Staff was super helpful, I saw them carrying luggage for one woman and they gave us a heads up on good restaurants and a bath house near by. The area is really good, lots of restaurants and things to do near by. It’s also close to several subway stations.
