Just finished a four-night stay while attending a scientific conference. I really cannot say enough good things about this place. Everything from start to finish was exceptional. The location is a combination of historic canal houses that the owners have creatively preserved while providing beautiful modernisation. I felt like a “local” each time I stepped out onto the street and walked along the quiet and beautiful canal to the many nearby shops and restaurants. Everyone there was incredibly welcoming. Note that with historic preservation if your room / suite is on an upper level you will be climbing levels of beautifully restored but traditional circular wooden stairs - not riding up on a glass-enclosed elevator with piped in music playing. This is part of the ambiance that gives the place it’s historic character but something to keep in mind when reserving. In my case, being in the “senior citizen” category but 1K and moving past 2,000,000 lifetime miles with United I wouldn’t hesitate to book the 2nd floor suite I had again and this would be the first place I book to stay on a return Leiden visit. Just a wonderful place to stay in a beautiful city. That’s it.
Had a lovely stay when visiting the Keukenhof Gardens. The atmosphere were familiar and cozy. The room was clean and tidy. And I always enjoy when I can make my own coffee in the hotel room! Top flor - great!
Our local friends arranged our stay for just one night in two rooms and I am SO glad they did. Our children had the attic "Lodge Suite" and we enjoyed the "Steenhof Suite", both of which had wonderful views of the canal at the front of the building. This charming boutique hotel is centrally located to enjoy all that Leiden has to offer. Built in the 15th century the remodel combines elegant modern touches while maintaining the most beautiful historical charms in the four suites available. We added breakfast to our booking and we very much enjoyed the meal they arranged that comes from a restaurant nearby, see photo (coffees prepared onsite). The staff was helpful and friendly. Work is underway to connect the building next door to the current hotel. I look forward to visiting and staying in one of these suites possibly at the newest options next door.
Just as I thought Holland Bike Tours can't do any better, they trumped us again with the selection of Steenhof Suites. With an ideal location and easy access to all the major attractions, this suite/ apartment is so good you most probably don't want to leave it at all. Beautifully appointed with all amenities, a full kitchen, a full bathroom, a huge bedroom with everything you need. An absolutely unforgettable experience, even though we did set off the fire alarm! (Our apologies once again)
Working in Leiden for 2 days, all the usual hotels booked out and very fortunate to get space in this unique hotel. Amazing history of the building, A First class modern renovation and Super service from the owner and staff. Had to stay in 2 different rooms- the lodge upstairs in the attic - but amazing experience being among the original 15 th century timbers 2nd night was in a large apartment downstairs with all modern conveniences ( wasted on me as I was there for such a short time ) Would definitely bring family next time ! Best of luck Sharleen with the expansion next door ... I will definitely come see it next time in Leiden
Steenhof Suites is a characterful old building that has been completely renovated by the charming owner, Sharleen De Boer. She has done all the interior design to a very high standard and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. We chose the Bruggehoofd room which is at the back and so very quiet, but is also spacious, light and airy. If you are going to Leiden this has to be the best place to stay by far. There are excellent restaurants just a few minutes walk away - we particularly liked the Malle Jan Bistro by St Peter's Church which is jut three minutes walk. Leiden itself is a beautiful town, a smaller Amsterdam perhaps but cleaner and with far fewer tourists. Other delightful towns are within easy reach and we particularly liked the small coastal town of Hoorn which is also medieval and has a pretty harbour. It is about an hour's drive away. You can park in a local car park or on the street but be aware that you will need a lot or Euro coins as the parking meters in Leiden do not take foreign credit or debit cards. (The metres in Hoorn do take debit cards). You can park anywhere in Leiden for a full 24 hours for Euros 13.20 and can even move the car elsewhere in the town. The covered car park nearby will sell a 24 hour hour ticket and does take credit cards, but if you leave the car park you have to buy a new ticket each time.
Why stay in Amsterdam when you can experience the lovely university town of Leiden. Here you'll find easy access to Amsterdam as well as other small cities and the tulip fields should you be here at the right time. We loved staying in the Royal Suite pictured; one of the more extraordinary rooms I have stayed in during my travels. The hotel staff are most accommodating and we look forward to visiting again as the hotel is in the midst of an expansion.
Friends organised an overnight stay for our special occasion. The room was amazing, large, well equipped luxury. Lots of character and a perfect location for exploring the wonderful Leiden. We were Lucky enough to have a sunny Saturday to enjoy the market before returning to Weilinger wine bar and restaurant for an “Al Fresco” lunch. We will definitely be back !
This charming place is a hidden gem to stay. Very nice and clean, beautifully decorated room, big suite and big bathroom with shower. Quiet on Friday night, with a canal view. Big bed and very comfortable mattress. Very helpful charming host Charlyn who helped us checking in and helped us with the suitcase to the suite. Very limited rooms in this beautiful place. They are expanding to next building and will be ready next year. Definitely we will come back. It is only 50 metres from the open food flower markets on Saturday and Wednesday. We didn‘t have breakfast here but had a lovely drink at their bar at 7pm after check in. You have your own keys entering into the building and your room. Parking is available along the canal. Book in advance! Memorable stay.
I dropped by this b&b when my family visited last Summer. The decor is quaint and rustic and despite the construction work that was going on outside at the time, the view of the park and canal is lovely. I can recommend staying here if you want to explore the centre of Leiden because the location is perfect!
