Golden Tulip Leiden Centre4.0 out of 5.0

I recently spent 5 nights at the Golden Tulip Leiden Centre whilst on business in this lovely township. Whilst the hotel is just a few minutes stroll from the rail station it is right next to a major road. If your room faces that roadway, as mine did, then you will hear the traffic noise. Sound proofing is minimal. The room itself was fair enough, just lacking in any aesthetic appeal. Breakfast included quite a range of foods but the eggs were not cooked well. On the other hand the breads were frsh and tasty. All up this hotel is fair enough but on the whole it lacked light, charm and appeal.
This is the kind of hotel that was once considered a "moderately priced" hotel, but has since raised its prices and lowered its standards. One gets the feeling that corners have been cut, but savings have not been passed on to the customer. The result is felt in gloomy rooms and depressed staff. In this sort of scenario, it might be better to opt for a budget hotel which has innovative ways of cutting costs while enhancing the experience of the traveller. For example, investing more in staff that are friendly and upbeat as a result, or providing minimal but chic furnishings in smaller rooms. There was nothing particularly wrong with my experience at this establishment, but it was not good value for money and I would not stay there again if I could help it. One comment regarding the location: it is conveniently near the station, so easy to get to if you arrive by train. But at the same time, it is a 20 min walk to the center of town, so take your pick depending on what is more important to you.
My wife and I stayed here last night. The beds were comfortable. A/C and Wi-Fi worked very well. Spacious bathroom. Excellent breakfast assortment of high quality food. Quiet room on 4th floor. No external noise heard in the night. Adjacent parking was much appreciated. Convenient walking distance to local attractions. I would definitely stay here again.
The good news this hotel is in an excellent location, across the street from the train station and close to the center of Leiden. The bar is excellent with very good snacks, especially the Asian platter. It has good parking (a bit expensive at €16 a day). The rooms are small but clean. The bad news the breakfast is mediocre, the noise from the streets, the room’s furniture old and they don’t have king size beds (what they have are connected single beds!)
The atmosphere, especially downstairs was very good. The family room was clean, nice solution for a family of 2 + 2. An location was perfect - close to the city centre, which was suitable for evening walks.
My wife and I stayed at The Golden Tulip for 5 nights in April and used it as our base for day trips. Leiden itself is a beautiful city and I was certainly glad we chose to stay here rather than in Amsterdam. More cost effective, not as busy, and only a relatively short train journey to most locations. We did day trips to Keukenhof gardens, Delft, Amsterdam and Haarlem. This hotel was very comfortable and the staff very helpful and friendly. Breakfast selection was great and also enjoyed a relaxing drink in the bar on a couple of occasions.
Leiden is an very nice city, but beware of bicycles. If you vist Ledin you must vist the mooler museum. In the old center you will find a lot of nice restaurants. When you are in Holland if you hade time is a trip withe a boat on the canal a nice things to do.
Great location - Leiden itself is 16 minutes by train from Schiphol and a small further hop to Amsterdam CS. The hotel is a 5 minute stroll from Leiden CS. The location is quiet. The rooms are good. The staff are helpful and friendly. The breakfast is good (the eggs are a bit of pot luck, one day rubber the next day scrambled were good). Wi-fi is good. All round a good place to stay - the city centre is lovely with canals, typical architecture and plenty of places to eat and drink.
Very convenient to train station and sightseeing. Staff was friendly and helpful. Old town center is only a short walk away via front or back of hotel. Spacious, clean, and comfortable room with refrigerator, couch, bathrobes and slippers, tea, coffee, and bottled water. Grocery store on the way to the old town. Pick up croissants, cheese, beer, fruits, etc, to take back to room. Used it as home base for day trip to Kuekenhof Garden and day trip to see the Flower Parade in Sassenheim. Would recommend to others.
Hotel conveniently located by railway station.Modern, reasonable restaurant, helpful staff.Unbeknown to us we had booked a "green room" which means only the beds are hastily made up, bathroom, cups, glasses not cleaned, bathroom towels not replaced and just left anywhere. Not aware of this when booking.
