Holiday Inn Guildford4.0 out of 5.0

Regulars to Holiday Inn Guildford like me can easily be caught out by the new parking arrangements, and then - like me - face a penalty fine, with no sympathy. Obviously I won't go there again. It's pretty dingy in the coffee lounge anyway.
This is a great example of this brand and ticked all the boxes for me. Friendly staff to welcome us and who were keen to help. They immediately told us about the car parking and asked me to type my reg into a machine, no sweat. We arrived late and decided to have dinner in the restaurant after a quick drink in the bar area which is one of the better ones that I have seen at a HI hotel. They had a deal on two starters and mains (plus free glass of wine each) for £39.99 and were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Our room was big and very comfortable and after a swim in the morning we had a delicious breakfast. It’s no more than 10 mins away from the centre of Guildford with easy access to the A3. What’s not to like?
Our first stay in Guildford and found the Holiday Inn very well postioned and in attractive surroundings. We had a very spacious, pleasant room with king bed and...proper glasses - not plastic!! As we had eaten a late lunch in town we decided on room service during the evening. Sadly, the sandwiches had thick bread although tasty but the vegetable panini was very unappitising as only the top had been grilled and the underside was very soggy ( this charge was deducted at check out next morning) Breakfast was very satisfactory with a good selection. The hostess was extremely welcoming and friendly
I don't really have much positive to say except it is handy for the research park. My overall experience was pretty negative. First I would describe my room on the -1 floor as very cold with the heating system struggling to warm it up. Second, the hotel is not close to town so you are stuck on the restaurant which is not the best. Thirdly, the fresh fruit available at breakfast was bruised and generally past its best. So overall, the hotel could be.much better.
Very close to centre of Guildford this is a comfortable reasonably priced hotel, could be made perfect if they had a shuttle to the Train Station. Rooms are comfortable, although i did not see a safe. Decent bar
I stayed here at the weekend with my girlfriend, the location was perfect for where we needed go in Guildford. We stayed in an executive room, which was ok. . . The problem was the staff, when we checked in I just found the whole process not very friendly, I think the member of staff must have been having a bad day. It was so robotic, no smile. Myself and girlfriend commented to each other as we walked to the room that it was not a very nice welcome. Some of the cleaning staff were clearly frustrated and rushed as they cleaned the rooms. Checkout was. . . 'Meh' as I handed over my room cards and paperwork. Again I don't know what's going on with staff attitude. Everything about the stay was 'ok' nothing great to report. The room was quiet and clean. I am a IHG member and stayed in their various hotels, this doesn't live up to the same standard.
I have previously stayed her before with my wife, son and Mother, and while it was pleasant and no real issues, I thought we will stay here again for an event we are attending. Sadly the event had changed location after we booked. We thought it would be easy to get a refund or move stay to another hotel. Sadly not. Although we booked an advanced rate, considering it was an honest and one of mistake they would oblige. Sadly not, the lady we spoke to on the phone was not very good, totally un-reasonable didn't really offer much in the way of customer service. So we are now lumbered with a night in the hotel which is not that close to where we need to be. We will of course stay but will be the last time we use this Hotel in the Franchise. Really disappointed. Too worried about losing their profit, then retain customers in my opinion. If that is the attitude of the top, it sadly wont take long to make its way down the staff chain.
We stayed for a club meeting in an executive room and found everything we expected: a clean, comfortable room, bed, bath, shower, safe, fridge, coffeemaker, free bottled water and snacks. Technically everything was working properly with ample outlets for telephone chargers and laptop. Although located near a busy road the soundproofing was satisfactory. The self service breakfast serves an excellent "full English breakfast" with all usual ingredients and the automatic coffeemaker offers a wide range of coffees, latte etc. A striking detail is the ever present smile of staff even when submerged with people at breakfast time. The location of this hotel is superb for meetings being right at the exit of a major access road and almost merged in the grounds od Surrey University. To reach the city center requires either public transportation, a car ( beware of the scarcity of parking places) or a taxi which reception will arrange. We preferred to leave our own car at the free carpark of the hotel and use a taxi. However for general shopping there is a Tesco nearby. We did not use the pool nor fitness facilities.
Putting aside the usuals (great bed, good room size, bathroom was fine and all the usuals) this is especially focused on the staff. We were staying here after a wedding close by and unfortunately my boyfriend broke his leg. I went to the hotel reception asking for a wheel chair and they could not have been more accomodating helping me get him to the nearby hospital (literally round the corner). So, thank you to the staff for trusting me to return it too! No complaints here, a gem part of the IHG group.
Today my mum and I visited this hotel for a massage and spa day, using a Groupon voucher I'd purchased for her birthday. Firstly I'd like to point out that our massages with Marina were great, I've looked to try and review her separately on here, which is doesn't allow, so I will comment on Google for that as I would happily give her 5 stars. The issues mostly stem around the confusion with the car park, whilst I may disagree with having to pay for parking - arriving for a service I have paid a premium for and then have to pay additional charge for parking, this in itself wasn't an issue. When I entered the hotel just before 10am (my mum had already arrived) I asked reception staff where the spa was and then how I pay for parking - she advised me that this would be explained in the spa. So I proceeded to sign in and ask again, was advised I could pay before I exit as cars were number plate monitored. So on leaving, just under what I believe was 3 hours we paid £3 parking per car. As soon as we had completed this my mum had a panic as to whether she was a few minutes over 3 hours, we went back into reception and they really couldn't advise on anything we should do? It wasn't a bad visit, yet we have left worrying if we have done something wrong with the parking - so so unclear. Swimming pool was nice, yet rather small. We were dissappointed to find that the temperature on the spa pool wasn't working and from talking to a regular this seems to have been as such for a few weeks? In my opinion the steam room and sauna were also not hot enough. I genuinely hate to moan when we had been enjoying our morning, but leaving with my mum feeling stressed over the car park was not what I'd hoped for.
