Our daughter attends Guildford University and the Holiday Inn has been host to our Mothers' day treats for the duration of her degree. Me, Nanny and The Daughter get treated to a three course buffet lunch and a beautifully presented gift. James was our charming host on this visit and made sure we were aware of the Prosecco deals, when chef was ready for us to fill our plates and made sure we were happy. The restaurant was filled with families with young children and also catered for guests in wheelchairs, as well as families with older children, like us. I enjoyed a salad starter, salmon 'roast' and an exquisite chocolate mousse wedge, (might have been a very light chocolate cheesecake), mum had the chicken with panna cotta, hubby had the roast beef and The Daughter had the vegetarian option, plus the chocolate mousse,
I'm not that familiar with the holiday inn chain but was expecting travelodge standards. The venue is nice, staff are friendly and helpful, and the breakfast range surprisingly good too. Was surprised to see black pudding as an option and they had seeds to add to your cereal - little things but they help make it feel like they don't stay static. Quality of the fry up was good too.
Easy enough to find and lots of parking. Only 1 receptionist for a queue of people so very slow to book in. Room was fine but a total lack of useful information was very frustrating. We had to ask about breakfast times and location as well as check out time - usually on a leaflet in the room and at reception. Evening menu was very limited and the food was mediocre. Expensive place to eat and drink. Breakfast was better but nothing to get exited about. Attended a workshop which was held in a room with a broken door lock. Constantly had to find the absent staff so people could get back in. Eventually we got a key card - only one. Buffet lunch included and was pretty good and refreshments were free and available all day.
This is a reasonable example of a Holiday Inn in a very good location. Like many of the hotels from this era they are getting old and tired and this shows here. Breakfast was discernibly cooked in a way to reduce the oil and fat content which is a very positive step although the black pudding isn't so tolerant of such a method. I would stay here again.
Having already spent several nights in the Holiday Inn group this year, I would say this is one of the best "older style" Holidays Inn's out there. However what makes this different is the staff attitude - which was lovely. Every member of staff that I came across on a Sunday evening greeted me and had knowledge about their product and clearly were happy in there work. Even on a Sunday evening. Bar had a lovely atmosphere, and good to see people relaxing and despite the size of the bar, felt intimate but not on top of each other. The public areas seemed well cared for. The bedrooms are the typical Holiday Inn (standard) type. Good to have an empty fridge in room and even better was the fact that they did not scrape on the milk portions - six in fact! Better than the standard four you get at other Holiday Inns. Rooms were clean and OK. They served a purpose, but of the previous generation of HI style. However they did the job. Over-all seems to be a well run and operated Holiday Inn, that serves a purpose. Just need to update the rooms and would get full marks from me...
Convenient, clean, free parking, easy and short drive to town centre. Only accessible by car as it is located out of the centre and off two major roundabouts. Pleasant dining room and good food, if a little over priced, service charged added automatically. Comfortable spacious room. Will stay again as there are, bizarrely, not many options in or near Guildford and this seems the best. All the staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. Swimming pool looked lovely but didn't have time to use it. Improvements ? I was given a room with a connecting door and it was not sound proof, I could hear the conversation next door... The bathroom needed re-grouting. A Starbucks sign suggests there is a cafe in the hotel, but it is just for cups of their coffee. I wanted tea but the teabags were not Starbucks but Twinnings.
Myself and best friend decided as part of my friends hen do we would treat her to an evening in the hotel after a long day at the races. We checked in fine the morning of the hen do and I left my car there. When you check in you have to give your registration number to reception so you don't get charged parking. We booked a table for 12 for dinner in the restaurant that evening. It was a little confusing as the number on the website is for the switch board and not the number for the guildford hotel. Once we managed to get the number we booked a table. The menu for the hotel is a mixture of grill and homley food I would say and was very nice. The only criticism I would have is we asked for water for the table but thought it was tap water only to find out we were charged for it. The food and the service however was very good. The hotel is beyond expectations and the rooms are very big myself and two friends all stayed together and the hotel arranged for a sofa bed to be put in the room which I slept on which was quite comfortable. The room includes a t.v fridge tea and coffee and a reasonable sized bathroom with a bath and a shower in the bath. We were on the bottom floor and the floor above can be a bit loud and woke us up in the morning but you can't help other guests. We just made it for breakfast which is till 10.30 am I believe it had a lovely mixture of hot and cold breakfast and pastries. There is also jucies and tea and coffee. Check out was also very easy and we used the pool and the sauna and stream room. Unfortunately the jacuzzi was being repaired but it was lovely to use the other facilities and this was all included with the room. There is also a Starbucks in the hotel and if you want to go into guildford there is a free taxi phone by the reception and it cost us about £10 Each way after 12am. I would recommend this hotel to other people and it would be an ideal base if you are working or visiting guildford.
Had a really lovely stay at this hotel. I must admit I did not expect the standard to be so high but I was really pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was really welcoming, my room was spotlessly clean and comfortable and breakfast was delicious! The staff were really lovely as well and even offered to book me a taxi to the station when I checked out. The only criticism I would have is that the service in the restaurant was quite slow considering there was only about four other tables occupied. A very nice meal though nevertheless. I will definitely be staying here again.
Stayed in this hotel for 5 nights as it's close and convenient for Surrey Sports Park and the Hospital. Food is good with a good menu and prices are typically slightly overpriced. Breakfast is Buffet style, so can get a bit dry under the heat lamps, particularly the black pudding which on occasion resembled the sole of a shoe. Bedroom was clean but the single beds are small, I'm 6' and my feet tended to hang over the end. Linen is tired and the pillows cheap, did not get a really good night's sleep. I didn't use the Spa, but my colleagues gave it quite good reviews. Watch out for sharp practice with food and drink, both in restaurant and bar. There is an optional service charge automatically added to the bill, they then also present you with the bill to pay with the option to pay a gratuity very prominent. You can basically end up tipping twice if you are not paying attention or embarrassed to ask for the service charge to be removed. The staff are nice and actually quite happy to remove the service charge, but they are slow to point out its already on the bill when tipping. Tut tut Holiday Inn
Location more suited for exploring the area with a car, but if you need a cab the hotel will order for you and the cab firm are prompt. A spacious hotel with fireplace and wood panelling in large reception area. Staff very helpful and when the maintenance team were unable to fix our bathroom extractor fan we were left a handwritten note apologising for inconvenience and a bag of salt caramel fudge sweets. Our double room had a huge kingsize bed and the room was spacious and clean. Only downside was the wardrobe which had sliding doors and made it awkward to gain access to hang clothes up - especially when they have the hangars which hook onto the fixed rail. These are the bane of my life when travelling! Good hairdryer and bathroom clean and with good power shower. Restaurant in the evening offered a decent range of wines and food was well prepared and presented. Service was good although a bit pricey. To go out to eat you would have to drive or get a cab so you pay for the convenience of eating in. Breakfast was busy but no queuing and offered cereals as well as cooked choice. Some pastries on offer also. To work it all off you can use the fitness centre which had a reasonable sized pool and gym aswell as treatment room although didn't check if this was available to guests as well as members of the gym. A good place to consider as a venue for conferences as they cater for groups aswell.
