We just spent six nights at the Castel Bigozzi. When we arrived, we were met by Audrey Hepburn reincarnated (she goes by the name,Teresa, this time). She acted as our guide, pointing out so many great things (and writing notes on our map) that we had our Tuscan stay planned out by the time we got to our room. She was so pleasant and helpful! Our room was a spacious suite (with fridge). The view out of our window (see attached) was pure Tuscany. The buffet breakfast each morning in the bright room by the pool was all we needed to charge our internal batteries for the day. Two lovely interns served. This was olive-harvesting season. That was taking place outside the windows of the breakfast room opposite the pool. It is a lot of "arms above the heart" work. The little buggers are taken off the tree one at a time with little hand rakes. Oh, and it apparently takes about a gazillion of them to yield a single bottle of oil. We were offered the opportunity to participate (we demurred). The Castel is pretty centrally located (very close to the ancient in-tact fort at Monteriggioni). It is also an easy drive from Volterra, San Gimignano, Poggobonsi, Siena, Arezzo, Montalcino, Pienza, Buonconvento and the Chianti area. The proximity allowed us to see a few of those places on some days. On Teresa's day off, Elisa covered the desk, and she arranged a wine/olive oil tasting followed by dinner through a winery/hotel/restaurant in Castellina in Chianti. It took some doing, but Elisa took care of all the details and communicated them to us via email. The owner of the Castel obviously understands the importance of good staff. They also have a masseuse available. She lowered my blood pressure to its lowest level in years. To make matters even better, because it was out of season, we got a smokin' deal. But here's a pleasant surprise: because it was mid-October, the weather was fabulous (it reminded me of going to football games). We're only sorry we couldn't stay longer, but Umbria wasn't going to see itself.
We loved our stay here. It is a great base for Siena. Close but peaceful rural setting. We stayed with 2 kids and all loved the pool and laid back atmosphere. Our room was large and comfortable. The pool area and grounds were v pretty with lots of flowers and wildlife and amazing views. The breakfast was good with nice coffee. Be aware that there is no eve food service but the local restaurant in the village is good. There was also a BBQ one evening which was excellent. We really enjoyed our stay.
Me and my wife have been here for the last week. We have used Castel Bigozzi as a base to tour central Tuscany. The hotel is charming, the staff have been curtious and attentive constantly. The hotel anticipated our out of hours arrival and arranged for our keys to be available without hassle. Easy reach from here from Florence to Siena. This has allowed us to chill in the morning by the pool and tour in the afternoon. Would stay again
Stayed for the second time at Bigozzi - this time with my daughter and friends. Very friendly staff with Barbara being particularly helpful with suggestions for day trips and restaurants in Siena (Enoteca I Terzi was amazing) Not the four seasons- but a truly relaxing and authentic Tuscan experience
We stayed at this hotel for two nights during our Italy tour. I was most excited to visit Tuscany and ended up disappointed with this hotel. The setting was beautiful and it was a remote hotel but we were under the impression there would be food nearby. Arrived late and were hungry and the receptionist was not helpful. Sent us on a half hour drive to try to find food without luck. They also charged me $2.50 for tea at the hotel! This should be included in the room. Room was dingy and dated. Bed was very uncomfortable. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.
Very cute hotel in Tuscany, charming and in a great location. The views from the hotel are absoljtely stunning. Very clean and great customer service. Would definitely recommend it. The pool wasn't very nice, looks like it doesn't get used and cleaned, this is the only constructive feedback I would offer.
We stayed here for 5 nights. It was such a central location to explore the surrounding hill towns. The staff were friendly and helpful. This castle is 1000 years old so the rooms were sparce and rustic however comfortable too - not modern. The only thing missing was a kettle for a cup of tea in the room. Would recommend as a Toscana base.
Lovely accommodation sitting remotely in the Tuscan hills. We visited with a group of 7 and reserved 2 adjacent rooms with plenty of wine on reserve for the quiet evenings. They have no working dining services into the evening, and taxis are sparse. We did walk into town two nights, though one was a 45 minute walk. Overall, a beautiful spot with affordable pricing. I would go again...much more to see (ahem, drink).
We stayed here for two nights as part of a two week tour of Tuscany and it is fantastic. We are a family of 4 (children 10 & 13) and booked a suite (room 15) which was stunning, on the top floor amongst the eves. Stunning views from each window and plenty of space. Great pool for recharging after a days sight seeing. Close to lots of local attractions, but feels away from it all. Friendly and efficient staff. It would be nice if breakfast was included in the room rate. Small bar and plenty of shared spaces. Lovely local restaurant in walking distance - but be sure to book which you can do at reception.
We stayed for two nights as part of a family tour of Tuscany. The building is beautiful and staff friendly and efficient. Room 15, a suite was perfect for the four of us, amazing views on the top floor located in the attic room. Fab pool, perfect for a pre and post culture trip.
