Hotel VN Consolação combines apartments for full-time tenants and hotel rooms for transients. I spent 10 nights there and paid a super-cheap price per night. Once I got past a frustrating check-in, I found the hotel staff to be quite pleasant, and I was happy there. My room contained a partial kitchen and queen-size bed; I loved the convenience of a better-than-average hotel gym that's always open and app-operated washers and dryers. I would describe the neighborhood as second-world, gray and dirty and not too safe at night, in between a third-world, filthy, Calcutta-like commercial area (Praça da República) and the first-world, clean and pleasant Higienópolis. Hotel VN is about a 12-minute walk to the nearest metro stop. Certainly at night I recommend Uber. Overall, for the very modest sum I paid I got a great deal.
