Wai Ora Lakeside Spa Resort

The place was great - on the edge of the lake - 10 minutes out of town - You have to go to Hell's Gate - ado the private mud baths !! Definite rent a swim suit - the rest of your clothing will remind you of your trip for a month !!

This hotel is outside Rotorua a ways - probably an hour+ walk to downtown. The rooms are nice, but not especially out of the ordinary. There aren't any true lake view rooms, but each room on the bottom has a porch with chairs. One can go through the spa property gate and right onto the beach for a nice walk. The staff is polite and helpful. The hotel has a small bar that opens early and stays open fairly late. The buffet breakfast is nice with a combination of Continental items, rolls, fruit, cereals, or you can order omelets that looked good. We did have a nice dinner also. The dining room isn't large, but is nicely lighted with natural light and is pretty and quiet. The outside spas and pool were disappointing. Two mineral spas in the back were small, hot tub like and artificial. These were set in a very small artificial garden area right next to a main walkway. There is a hot tub and cold water swimming pool on the lake side. The swimming pool is oddly colored but is ok. Just not anything different from a budget hotel. Just not a spa like I was used to seeing. Don't know if the indoor massage was good - didn't do. Don't bring kids - they'll hate it.

Was treated to two nights here in Rotorua as part of my birthday celebrations by hubby. On being welcomed at reception I was gifted with a personalised birthday card which was a nice touch. Even though the room was alot smaller than I expected it had a decent sized very comfortable bed with extra pillows if required. Kettle needs filling in the bathroom, no plates or cutlery besides one sharp knife? Shower pressure was good, ample towels, bathrobes, scuff slippers and jandals supplied for walking to the hot mineral pool and spa area. Admittedly the weather was awful during our stay but we still hopped in the lovely hot pool. We investigated the kawakawa sauna which was freaking hot and attempted to go in the steam room, but it smelled a bit and looked a bit mouldy for my liking, maybe time for an upgrade? We had an awesome "romantic dinner package" at the onsite Mokoia restaurant. The food was lovely especially the soup of the day. I know people don't usually rave about soup, but that pumpkin soup with coconut cream and lemongrass was mmm. Hubby also treated me to a pamper package at the spa onsite. We had a couples hot stone massage and then I was whisked away for the rest of my pampering. Fantastic job Emma!! Top marks. All in all it was a great couple of days away for some RnR. Highly recommend the onsite spa facilities. The resort could possibly do with a little bit of upkeep in the pool and jacuzzi sauna areas.

This hotel is not a lavish property, but is certainly a place to relax and enjoy the nature. From the time we checked in and to the time we checked out everything was just perfect. Clean and calm environment where staffs are very helpful. Binod the night manager in particular was very wonderful and professional who made sure that we were really looked after. We felt that he was our private butler as he had asked to dial his number for any assistance needed while we were on stay there. On the first night we had dinner at the popular restaurant at the resort to celebrate our anniversary, Binod again was a brilliant host. The restaurant offers great tasting and local ingredients infused perfections. We were presented with a candle light with our dessert , again the desserts were just amaaazing. The chocolate moose is highly recommended. We used the spa area on our second night and were let to use it even after hours and really enjoyed the outdoor healing water. Thank you for a memorable stay we will be back. Highly recommended.

The $200+ room was small, with minimal facilities. You can boil water but you have to use the bathroom sink to get water and to clean up. There are tea, coffee, cups, glasses in a tiny alcove with no light. It is almost impossible to plug a computer in anywhere near the desk - you have to get under the desk and unplug the TV, but the socket is too close to the ground to take a Mac plug. A helpful member of staff hunted for a power board and 5 hours later found one. The socket to plug your phone into so it can be beside the bed was actually right behind the bed, so you have to pull the bed away from the wall to get at it. The bathroom is OK, but the sink drains at an incredibly slow rate and the staff, when consulted, said, 'oh, they are all like that'. It's not so - the shower drains easily into the same drain. It is blocked but the staff didn't want to do anything about it, possibly because it was after hours. The best you can say is it's beside the lake, but down the road, also beside the lake, there is the Cedarwood Lodge where I usually stay - spacious rooms, each with a good kitchen, very helpful staff, and much cheaper than the Waiora Spa.

Wanted a special weekend away for our anniversary. The main was average, the breakfast bad (don't have the pancakes) we had a superior room and had 2 sky channels and pillows I would expect at a hostel. I am pregnant and couldn't have a spa but was happy to swim in the pool, but it was so cold we went to blue lake instead. The idea of booking the resort was to spend time there but there is nothing there worth staying for.

We enjoyed every aspect of the Wai Ora. The staff were the most hospitable encountered. Highly recommend a stay here. Checking in was as easy as it gets. Location is perfect. We will reserve here again when the opportunity exists.

Guest are #1. The service at this resort is amazing. They truly treat you like you are their only guest. Great recommendations great support in figuring out what is going to make you happy. We traveled from half way around the world and still they made me feel at home. Ok so they also have great spa and are affiliated with Hells Gate spa and pools. So they can basically get your mind and body feeling very good. Great spa at both locations. Then they also have award winning restaurant. Best food at the Lake, easily. Award winning creative chef. Super great presentation and flavors. Oh the flavors. So I would say to come here and have a great time. Yum fun and super great team.

Location isn't particularly great as it's out of town. The room was good, showers were good. We booked patio with Lakeview but didn't realise that the "patio" was the footpath which made it quite awkward to sit outside or have privacy. Breakfast wasn't incl. with room which we were happy to pay but we were offered coffee/orange juice at no charge but ended up being charged (even for a glass of water). The couples Miri Miri 1hr massage was amazing and worth the money. The staff were courteous and overall an alright visit.

very kind staff, superb service in spa (but be sre to reserve in advance), excellent restaurant, and they drive you to hell's gate and into town to the supermarket. really enjoyed our stay there. The only minus is that the front desk is a bit disorganized and our bill was wrong. But all was corrected with a big smile.
