If you are looking for a comfortable and tranquil location with breathtaking views in Rio, this is a place to visit. The hospitality is excellent and Matteo is attentive, flexible and a genuinely lovely guy. If you are looking for a commercial five star hotel with such amenities, this is not for you. Instead, Tuakaza offers a unique experience which is authentic and "local" with exquisite touches of class such as the pools and bedrooms. Matteo provided excellent recommendations and was a message away if we had any questions. The beach is close by, there are the treks into the Tijuca Park and I'd recommend Uber as a means of getting around which is cheap and easy.
The TuAkAzA resort is incredible, not only for the views and the beautiful bedrooms but for the comfortable beds, the welcoming common areas but mostly for the host, Matteo. Matteo was extremely kind, helpful and knowledgeable. My boyfriend and I were appreciative to have Matteo to ask for local recommendations and advice. The showers had excellent water pressure and got nice and warm. The breakfast was good. Everything in the house is included in the price, including beers, sodas and water. There is a really nice hike close by and easy/safe to walk to beaches. Matteo is bilingual which made it easy to communicate. Both Matteo and his wife were very nice and approachable, and would only recommend this place to anyone staying in the Rio area.
After reading the previous fantastic reviews the Lodge had received we were so excited about our visit... it did not disappoint! We were greeted with open arms by the lovely owner Matteo. At check in we were upgraded to a larger room which was a huge spacious suite. This comprised of a large bath tub/jacuzzi, rainfall shower, balcony with a hammock, bottle of champagne and many other wonderful features. We were told to make ourselves at home and help ourselves to drinks/snacks. Being British, we found this difficult at first but by the second day we felt so comfortable. We really liked the stocked fridge full of drinks (including beers) and table full of a large variety of different foods. It was perfect for the first day when we didn’t manage to get out to lunch! Breakfast was lovely- a starter of fruits then onto hams, cheeses, warm bread and scrambled egg. All served with a stunning view. Apart from the amazing location our favourite thing about the place was the families genuine generosity and kindness towards us. It was not an experience we will easily forget and we hope to come back with friends in the near future. Thanks again!
We were picked up by the owners personal driver from the airport which was great not having to figure out a taxi or Uber. We arrived at night and were amazed by the view when we woke up. When we arrived we were welcomed by Matteo and he treated us like family. Every morning Matteo had breakfast prepared for us, which was usually a collection of local fruits, coffee, fresh baked bread, meats, cheese, and eggs. There were complimentary drinks and snacks available all day in the main are and in our bedrooms. Our room was fantastic and clean with very comfortable beds. The view, the view, the view! We were a little nervous about the location and finding a way to and from restaurants, etc. This was no problem at all as local Ubers were easily available day and night to pick you up and take you where you need to go. Bonus, there is a very nice mall less than 10 mins drive that has many very nice restaurants and one in particular that delivers to Tuakaza. We were there to visit for Carnival and absolutely loved our stay, we can't say enough good things about the property and our hosts.
TuaKaza is an amazing family run hotel. Hotel is the wrong word honestly, because once you are there, you are part of their home and family. Matteo is one of the most genuinely generous hosts I have ever met. The views are breathtaking. The whole place is soul warming.
We’ve stayed in this beautiful place full of character for few days. We absolutely loved it. You will get to share this magnificent home with a very generous and kind host Matteo and his loyal dog companion Donna. Rooms are huge and absolutely gorgeous and the view from the terrace is breathtaking. The pool is refreshing and it has an amazing waterfall. There are lots of birds, butterflies and monkeys hanging around. Ipanema beach and Copacabana beach are 10-15 mins away. We hope to return one day!
We loved Tuakaza! My boyfriend and I recently stayed 5 nights here and absolutely loved our time. From the minute we were greeted by our host Matteo and his sidekick the gorgeous Donna the Dog (you will LOVE her whether you are a dog person or not!), we were looked after so well & felt right at home. You will lose hours staring at the magnificent views right on your doorstep, and relaxing in one of the common areas or in your own balcony hammock. With a snack room/kitchen and unlimited drinks available at all times you will feel so at home here and not want to leave. Breakfast every morning was a real treat, served to you personally on the balcony at whatever time suits, delicious fresh fruits (Mango to die for!), warm breads, croissants and excellent coffee. The bedrooms are all fantastic, we stayed in the gorgeous purple Acai room but had a quick look at all of the other rooms as they were vacant at the time of our stay, and all looked fabulous in their own special way! Because the lodge has so many places to hang out other than your room, you would be fine booking a smaller room as you don't have to stay in there like other hotels where there are not many common areas. The Papaya room has the highest balcony so would have the best view from your room, but there are so many balcony's to sit and relax on you won't miss out on anything by booking one of the cheaper/smaller rooms. We were lucky enough to see a Toucan fly by and even more excited when 2 monkeys came to visit on our last day there! They come right up onto the balcony where you have breakfast (you can watch from one of the other balconies so you don't scare them away). Our room was serviced daily, even changing our sheets and towels half way through our stay so don't be put off by reviews saying it's not clean, it definitely is! And a lovely lady seemed to be there every day doing general cleaning around the house. Beautiful toiletries provided in your room, brand new shampoo & conditioner. Proper hairdryer available (not just one of those awful tiny hotel ones). Matteo was a fantastic host offering lots of tips for things to do, everything he told us was 'beautiful' and worth doing was spot on so trust his recommendations! He even showed us how to make Caipirinhas and made sure there was always plenty of Cachaca on hand- awesome! The only tips I would have for improvements would be to clean the pool a bit more, we still swam but there were lots of leaves etc. in there so didn't look that inviting until we were brave enough to give it a go. And the other small thing is the King bed is actually 2 singles made up as one bed, so there is a gap between you when sleeping.....comfy beds for sure just not ideal for a couple. Overall we will definitely recommend this place to everyone back home in New Zealand & would love to come back! A unique Rio experience, stunning location, amazing wildlife, welcoming host, & a relaxing stay guaranteed!
Lovely view and nice breakfast but in need of thorough housekeeping. Definitely, not a 4 star, not even 3. Don't be fooled by professional photos. Towels smelled like dirty socks and bed sheets reeked cheap perfume. The pools are elgaed and water dirty. It seemed the house had not been cleaned for many years with spider webs in places. Wi-Fi in room never works only a weak signal from balcony. The last straw was what looked to be mouse droppings on bathroom counter! A terrible let down after going by other's reviews.
If you have the opportunity, spend a couple of days in this mind-blowing house (separate rooms rented out) while visiting Rio. The host is super chill and helpful with suggestions. The premises feel more like a super rich friend's house than a hotel (technically it is a house that you rent a room in through Expedia). The view is spectacular, we spent hours just taking it in, during either breakfast or just during the day. The house has a pool but we were visiting during the winter and couldn't take advantage of it. Just a brisk walk up the hill from the house is La Rampa! It's a place where people take off with their gliders. It provides even more impressive views than Tuakaza. We just drove our car through the main gate and up the steep hill all the way to the take off ramp (don't know if that is allowed but oh well, no one stopped us)! Warning, if you're afraid of heights this is not the place for you. There is an immensely steep drop into oblivion from the top of the rock - even though I'm super adventurous I felt a little queazy while staring down into the abyss. The view of Rio underneath is indescribable.
This place is awesome. The service is excellent and the views the best. They serve breakfast every morning and they have snacks and other edibles all day and night. There is plenty of space to roam around and feel at home. We stayed at one of their smaller rooms but found it quite large compared to regular hotel rooms. The space is friendly for all staying there to mingle during breakfast or in their other common areas. They outfit the place with everything you need and Mateo even took our clothes to the laundromat to get washed. Awe!!! And we saw monkeys, Tucans, and other birds from the balcony! Some people may not be fans of this, but I totally was, they have a cat and a beautifully behaved dog that add to the homey feel. It is lodge charm, I would only suggest that there is a crew that comes in frequently to throughly clean some inside areas since it is located in the midst of nature. What would make this a total dream and come back to place for me? Some variety in the breakfast, a workout area, heated pool, and perhaps some activities in their beautiful grounds when they have a full house. The reason I give this a 5 and not a lower rating is because you can't get anything better at this price point. If they instituted some of my suggestions they would become a top luxury retreat and outside of the budgets of many.
