This hotel lies in a quiet area just outside Leblon in Javea. The rooms are spacious and decorated stylish. This is absolutely my favorite place to stay in Rio. The impeccable service, the friendliness of staff, the perfect breakfast. A hidden pearl in Rio. Ssshhhhttt don't tell anyone.
The hillside property is beautiful with views of Rio that one would see in a movie or a postcard. Ricardo (hotel manager) along with the owners ensure that guests have a great and memorable experience from check-in. The hotel property is clean and has a home charm that one would expect in a quiet and safe neighborhood. The made to order omelettes along with freshly squeezed orange juice was a treat and there were two mornings some of the local wildlife (small monkeys) greeted some of the guests as they are feed bananas as a treat. I would book this place again as I prefer quiet vacation experiences and having the jacuzzi to myself on most nights was awesome. The hotel was a $8.00 cab ride to Ipanema or Copacabana and due to the events of the Olympic games and the mass tourists in town, this place meet my needs for a week-long stay in Rio. The hospitality is superb and the every staff members greeted me with warmth. Chad Jersey City, NJ
This is a charming small hotel with superb views. The hotel has only 7 rooms, all with excellent views on the hills of Rio and Christ the Redeemer. The hotel staf is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are nice and clean and have everything you need with comfortable beds. Breakfast is tasty with fresh bread and cake. There is a gym and sauna though I didn't make it their. The hotel is close to Leblon (5 minutes by cab - cheap). I certainly will go back!
The last, 7th room "villa" is a disgrace with mosquitos, loud AC, heart attack number and steep steps. Smells like piss. Management should not open this badly calked villa. A disgrace like sleeping in a urinal. Will never come back to this place.
The view from our room was like something out of a dream. The hills and mountains of Rio, covered in tropical vegetation, extending to a view of Gavea beach below. At night we kept our shutters open and enjoyed the breeze. We woke up to birdsong and this iconic view. My only criticism is that some of the stairs are not well lit. Some light bulbs are burnt out and have not been replaced. This makes it a little scary when you are on the stairs at night. Otherwise, my best hotel experience ever! I took a screenshot of the directions for driving to the hotel that were on the website, and these came in handy when we took a taxi from the airport. This hotel is a gem.
Rent a car in Rio and drive it to Gavea Tropical. The hotel is in the bottom of a mountain and quite far away from the Ipanema and Copacabana beach, so a car is the ultimate gear to get there and travel through the city.
When looking for a special hotel for the last moments in Brazil with my girlfriend, I chose Gavea Tropical: the location and lay out seemed amazing. There was one room left on Hotels.com and I took it. I had previously double-checked the photos on the hotel’s official website which mentioned they had 6 rooms. However, I had the… 7th room! It is called “Villa”, DO NEVER TAKE IT! It has no view, no balcony, it is close to the road so extremely noisy, very poorly isolated (you basically feed mosquitos), there is no wifi, hot water did not work, among others… All of this could have been just frustrating without the “icing on the cake”: the room smelled like urine (it’s just down the swimming pool)!!!! This is unacceptable! When we left, I gently and calmly told the surfer-styled receptionist that such a room was a disgrace and that we were super disappointed. He replied that he knew the room was the worst and scornfully said “my friend, next time you will pay the price for a better room!” There was just one pricing available on Hotels.com so no way to know… Simply Outrageous!!! Who dares to treat customers like this?! I was both deceived by Hotel.com who is careless enough not to thoroughly check that the description of the hotels matches reality and by Gavea Tropical because there is no way to find the ‘Villa’ room on their website. Basically the room is the complete opposite of what you can expect from the pictures and the service was the worst I have ever had. The worst value for money EVER!
My husband and I spent three nights in the hotel. The pros: - the staff: We arrived late in the city and the hotel arranged one of the staff to pick us up, which was great. Super helpful and speaking excellent English - the view: you open the window and you have the view on the city and Cristo - when having breakfast you have little monkeys coming to fetch some bread, and the hotel seems to have been built in a jungle, which is quite exotic and fun The main cons: - Location: The hotel is located slightly off the city, 5min taxi drive from Leblon beach. You need to take a cab or rent a motorbike. Breakfast is not amazing but ok. The facilities (shower) seem to have aged so might need some refurbishment. All in all, a nice hotel, good value for money with good service. The location is the main downside but I guess you need to choose between an exotic location far from the city center pollution and hassle vs conveniency.
We stayed at the Gavea for one night ..was our final stop before going back to the Uk. We were met by Kyle who promptly upgraded us to the suite and was told that we could have it after check out the next day at no extra cost ( our flight was leaving at 11pm) The views coupled with the serenity was awesome. The Caiprinhas were delicious! Bed sheets, towels etc were fresh and soft. Maggie knocked us up a wholesome breakfast the next morning with eggs ,bacon, toast.freshly baked cake and fruit and yogurt with a fresh pot of coffee. We got to see the micro monkeys while maggie fed them banana. Bruno ..well what can I say..Thank You!!..He is a wealth of information. He took us up by foot to the Rochina Favela and we were privileged to see and meet a few of the friends he had made. An amazing experience. He also dropped us off at the Airport..horrendous traffic ..but on time! This hotel is a lovely little gem and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
My husband an I spent four lovely nights at this treasure of a hotel. It's charm was eclipsed only by the spectacular view from our balcony of Christ the Redeemer amidst the lush green of the forest. We chose it to get away from the touristy spots but have ready access to RJ's beach area and downtown. It did not disappoint. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We would revisit in a heartbeat!
