Makanda by the Sea

My husband and I were supposed to spend two nights here and then go back to San Jose for one night before flying home. After being at Makanda for less than 24 hours, we changed our reservation to spend our last Costa Rican night in paradise. There are no words to describe the tranquility and privacy of this hotel. They even have a private beach, a short golf-cart ride away that is only available to hotel guests. We spent our last day in Costa Rica sitting in the hot tub (in the rain), drinking tropical cocktails, and watching monkeys in the trees. Does it get any better than that?

The online pictures of Makanda appear too good to be true, but believe me when I say the resort is even better in person. This place exceeded every expectation I had when we booked: from the private villas with spectacular views, to the warm and laidback staff, the open air restaurant with a first rate included breakfast and epicurean dinner menu, the unique resort layout including lush grounds teeming with wildlife, and of course the pool area with its chill vibe and the most jawdropping ocean view I have ever seen. This is not a cookie cutter resort; it is a truly boutique hotel that offers an experience you will not get anyplace else. And, do not let price dissuade you as they offer a variety of villas that make the resort affordable to a range of budgets without sacrificing quality. I have not stayed at other resorts in the area, but to me, this is the only place to book in Manuel Antonio.

My husband and I went here on our honeymoon, and it was well worth every penny. We got the honeymoon suite with our own private pool and the view was something out of a dream! The room itself was very nice as well, the bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Our only complaint would be the shower was not comfortable, the bottom is made of rocks and not massaging rocks but we put a few folded towels in the shower and it was fine after that. The swim up pools were great for cocktails and sushi made right in front of you and the room service was also delicious. One day we went deep sea fishing and we brought a Mahi Mahi back, the kitchen prepared it how we asked and then delivered it to our room... talk about service. Over all it was a great place to stay with very kind people. Ver recommended to anyone having a couples or adult only trip

A beautiful property with just 26 gorgeous rooms decorated with a refined touch and attention to detail, BUT lacks a few things that real top resorts show off. Here a few issues during our stay: 1.- Slippery ramps make walking unsecure in the property... must change for steps 2.- Menu in restaurant is very limited as well as their wine list 3.- Web app is totally unuseful, services missing, others incomplete, difficult to use and understand 4.- Wifi does not work seamlessly across the property 5.- Menus available only in English, not even in Spanish.... we are in Costa Rica!

This place can be described as nothing less than heaven on earth. Absolute tranquility in an ideal location, offering nature at it finest - monkeys, sloths, tropical birds to name a few but also absolute 5 star service and luxury everywhere you go. Sushi bar in the pool is probably one of my favourite meals I’ve EVER had. The staff were absolute second to none. The pools - we still dream about!! Views that you will never get bored of. Breakfast phenomenal everytime!! If you are considering booking - DO IT!!!! Thank you so much to the team for such an amazing memorable honeymoon and for looking after us so well - we felt like royalty!

We had the privilege of staying here for two night while visiting the national park. All the staff made us feel so welcome. The restaurant and bar areas were so beautiful, the food was very tasty and each dish beautifully presented. The room felt so luxurious and made the most of the surrounding forest and ocean view. The detailed textures on and within the buildings were fascinating - many photos taken!

I’ve been coming to Manuel Antonia for quite some time and this by far the best place! We’ll created with a stylish finish! This place brings the whole community to a higher standard! I will be returning many times!

Spent 5 nights at Makanda. The hotel is very pretty, with views of the Pacific from everywhere. Rooms are well appointed and the staff is very knowledgeable, courteous and attendant. The hotel is built on a steep slope so the trip to the beach and back in the golf cart is a trip. Only criticism is that the food is not as good as other restaurants in the are.

I've stayed or seen just about every spot in Manuel Antonio, and this place is on top. The setting and vive are incredible, the rooms are true luxury and the food is amazing! Friday sessions with a great DJ by the pool, sunset view and drinks...If you want 5 star, this is the place. Just stop in and check it out. They also recently added craft beer!!! World class location!

Our very private villa included a private plunge pool, living area and huge bathroom & kitchen. Service and hospitality was wonderful. It's close to Manuel Antonio National Park our villa had monkey & sloths right outside or window. Amazing place
