The most outstanding aspect of this hotel is the consistency of service and the staff’s attention to detail. Nobody breaks the discipline which is remarkable and speaks highly of the management and employees passion to offer the best to their guests. What made our experience great were the detail actions by waiters during breakfast, the concierges or the bell boys. As side note a porto tasting at Graham’s lodge is complementary, which was very nice too. Thank you guys for a wonderful stay!
While the room and decor were fine, the service was the worst I have ever experienced for any class of hotel. We arrived late and the restaurant was already closed. Since we were hungry we ordered room service. Ordering was easy and quick. When we got the food, I discovered a black, thick hair in my pasta. I immediately called room service. While room service answered quickly to take my order it took over ten minutes of calling for someone to answer the phone when there was an issue. When we told them we had found a hair in the food, all they said was “oh, let me talk to my colleague and call you back.” It took another 10-15 to hear back from anyone and that was the first apology we received. While they offered to replace my dish it had been almost 45 minutes since we had ordered the food and already past midnight, I just to go to bed at the point and have the meal comped. However, they (very reluctantly, I may add) offered to remove only my meal, not my husbands, due the hair in the food. I didn’t get to eat dinner and they were rude and seemed like I convinced them with this issue. In addition, we asked for a late check out and were told that we would have until 1pm. At 1245 we got a call asking “Are you planning on leaving today?” There were a lot of other negative experience as well, during our stay. We never got the coffee we ordered at breakfast despite asking a couple times and the staff member (that had helped us only a couple hours earlier) very harshly and condescendingly asked my husband if he was a guest when we stopped in to drop off umbrellas and use the bathrooms during the day. While each of these could be a one-off, combined they made for a terrible stay at a hotel that came so highly recommended - and we were only there for one night! I would never recommend this hotel. The service was terrible and you can find a much better staff at so many other hotels in Porto. We are so thankful that our travel agent messed up and we only spent a night there. We look forward to being able to spend a night somewhere else in Porto that won’t leave such a bad taste in our mouths.
With it's central location and opulent setting this is the place to stay in Porto. As a Spire Elite member we got upgraded to a Duplex Suite. The room was lovely but there was no view from the lounge. I would have like to see some of the other rooms. The staff were charming though and I can't fault the experience.
Overall the hotel was nice and in a great location. The room was large and the bed was comfortable. One thing that is very important to note is that the hotel turns the air conditioning off in the fall/winter. The room was SO HOT. Opening the windows is not really an option due to the street noise. The spa was fantastic and I highly recommend having a massage there. Room service was prompt and well presented. My biggest issues were exclusively with the reception staff who were rude and unaccommodating. 1) We arrived to Porto around noon. Our rooms were not ready, which was fine. We asked that the receptionist give us a call when the room was ready. A few hours later we had not heard from them. We stopped by the hotel. The receptionist rudely and without making any effort to actually check with housekeeping, told us that it would be at least another hour and half so we went to the port houses. 2.5 hours later, no one calls. We call to check and were informed that the rooms have been ready for a while, and there was no record of anyone calling us to notify. 2) The receptionist called us the night before checkout to ask if we would need a wake up call or a taxi. I informed her that we would need a taxi at 8:45AM and that we had four people and 6 bags. The next morning we get down to the lobby and there is one small car there for us. I informed the concierge that we would need a van, so they agree to call one. 15 minutes later, I asked when the car would be there. The concierge informs me that they are still working on finding one. At this point I was very displeased and asked that they get one van or two cars for us immediately. I asked why anyone even called to ask if we needed a car if they didn't note what I said. The concierge said that the receptionist called me the night before but didn't note that we needed a van. About 3 minutes later we got into two cabs, thus paying double. They were so careless that they didn't even bother to ask which bags belonged with which people. Luckily, it didn't really matter. Also luckily, we were taking a train, because if we would have been flying we probably would have missed the plane. No apologies or efforts to amend the situation. 3) I loved the scent of the diffusers in the hotel and ordered several of them which the concierge were supposed to ship to my home. It has been one month and I have not received the diffusers. I have called to hotel to attempt to get a tracking number, find out if they were ever shipped, or get my $523.91 refunded. I have been hung up on twice and am literally having to beg to have my call returned. Please be aware that this hotel's staff is completely unconcerned with the customer experience. They know people are going to stay at IHG hotels regardless of how rude and careless they are.
Stayed here for three nights with my family to see the Christmas lights , welcomed with a friendly smile & and the smell of a wonderful diffuser (Black Orchid)upgraded to a room facing the square the rooms are spacious with bath and shower , kettle in room , a little noisy in the middle of the night due to people going home but great for the atmosphere of being in the centre of things for people watching All the staff were very attentive calling you by your name , the breakfast was plentiful and well presented , the breakfast is held in the Astoria Restaurant located on a busy corner allowing again for you to feel the atmosphere of this wonderful city . The Hotel is well situated within walking distance of all the shops and about a 15 min walk down hill to the waterfront Porto is very hilly so be prepared ? There is plenty to see and do in Porto so you won’t get bored it’s a wonderful city and the Intercontinental is your perfect host if there was any thing to complain about it would be the lack of nibbles served in the bar with drinks in most 5 star establishments you expect it but at this hotel you have to ask !! Would I return yes of course I think we needed more that three days to take in all that Porto has to offer .
We have visited Porto and Douro Valley in December and stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. The location is really perfect the hotel being located exactly in the main square and 50 m far from Sao Bento (art) train station. The old building of the hotel is amazing, rooms are perfectly decorated, large and offer very good facilities. So are also the bathrooms. All personnel was very nice and professional. For the negatives - those having sleeping problems due to noise should avoid the rooms facing the market (cobblestone is very noisy)/the price of the rooms is very high especially considering that no breakfast is included in the room rate. Otherwise, all is just perfect.
Staff were professional and friendly. Room was large and clean and had all the necessities. Hotel offered free vouchers to the Graham’s for premium port tasting. Definitely take advantage of that and book with the concierge. Enjoyed our stay and would book again.
We stay there for the weekend, Porto is a super city. The hotel is fantastic, very clean, very convenient, very good location, but what make the hotel extra special is the service. I contacted the concierge few days prior to our arrival, and they were beyond my expectation with all my questions. Rogerio and Goncalo are great, real asset for the hotel. At the bar Ruben is perfect, smily, helpful and always happy to serve great drinks... Every staff I met were wonderful, thank you so much for this amazing weekend, hope to be back soon. PS: the bed was extra confortable.
Came here for a little afternoon tea before catching our flight in the little bar area. The chef was lovely and made our orders before opening time. The tea selection is lovely and recommend the Gemmaicha tea (Japanese green tea infused with rice and popcorn). The decor is so nice with the comfy seats book shelves etc. All it was missing was a roaring fire! Really enjoyed our time here and recommend a visit whilst you're in Porto.
This place is all sorts of classy nice but without being off putting. Also a surprising focus on the little details. For example, the carpet in the public spaces are quite plush and comfortable and they even have a full pillow menu just to make sure you have the right pillow. The rooms are quite large especially for a European hotel and the bathroom is huge. Great blackout curtains as well. Lastly, super duper location close to all the action in Porto. Can’t get better than this hotel. Excllent.
