Our room was very small and had rotting skirting boards and a door that had been replaced but not yet painted. The bathroom was small and dared too. I booked directly with the hotel and received breakfast for an additional 1 euro per person per day. The breakfast was standard, nothing special, but for 1 euro cannot complain. I booked and paid in advance to receive a discount so maybe that's why we got a shabby room. On the plus side the air conditioning was good. The hotel is mid way between the beach and the train station. So location was quite good. We caught the airport bus and walked about 10 mins up the street to the hotel. Reception staff did not appear to be very interested in there job.
We really adored our entire stay at Hotel Gounod! The room was large and sunny, with two Juliet balconies. Concierge/front desk were so helpful and able to provide interesting recommendations. At only 400 meters from the beach, you can walk everywhere, including the main train station that takes you to Monaco in about 20 minutes. If you are interested in a hotel with a terrace, go next door to Hotel Splendid, Gounod's sister hotel. This really is the perfect hotel type for anyone who wants to feel "French" and yet not break the bank. We would stay again without a doubt!
When lying in a hospital bed during November 2016 with my right side of my body out of action, all sorts of things were racing through my mind. Will I be able to move normally again, how long will it take to recover from the stroke which had incapacitated me and strewth - what about our holiday to Nice in June? Fortunately, I made a good enough recovery and on the 21st June 2017 we flew off to the sunshine on the Cote d'Azur and the Hotel Gounod. When the taxi driver dropped us off at this very typically French old style hotel, I was not sure what to think of it from first impressions as I limped up the steps to the reception where we were greeted by Gail, the very friendly and helpful receptionist. She booked us in to room 511 on the top floor quickly and off we went in the small hotel lift to find our room still being cleaned. Gail was very apologetic but it was not a disaster, I was ready for a cold beer so we left our luggage in the care of Gail and headed down to the front, which for most would be a straight seven to ten minute walk, but as I now look like someone from John Cleese''s Ministry of Funny Walks after my stroke, it took us a bit longer before getting my beer at the first bar we came to on the attractive Promenade-des-Anglais. When we did get into our room after our very welcome refreshment, we were please to see a good sized and air conditioned room, which after a night's sleep we learned had a comfortable bed. The bathroom, like our hotel room, was kept very clean but was a little dingy, although well fitted with a shower, deep bath and nice washbasin. Breakfast in the compact breakfast room was typical continental fare, although there was also a hot choice of bacon and scrambled egg. The staff were all very friendly and efficient and looked after the guests well. Due to the compact size of the breakfast dining room one busy morning, after we had squeezed into a corner, a group of younger guests came in and as there was no where for them to sit together they were asked to return a little later. However, that only happened on one morning. We were usually in for breakfast by 8.30 am and at that time it was not too busy, as it was thirty minutes later. Nice is a great place to visit, there are loads of bars and restaurants, the old part of the town is fascinating to wander through and on the evening, near the Opera House in what is the market area during the day, is a bustling place with busy restaurants and bars on the evening. The city also has a very easy to use tram system which we made good use of. The Gounard is well placed for the front which is, as mentioned, a short walk to the front if you turn right when leaving the hotel, or another shortish walk in the opposite direction you reach the train station which is ideal for visiting other resorts along the coast. We visited Cannes, Menton, Antibes and Monaco during our week there, being so close to the station was very handy. For those wanting to sunbathe and take a dip, there is a free section on the stony beach, you will need something to lie on due to this. For those wanting to lash out there are private sections of beach with soft sun loungers and parasols, but they are not cheap. However, the facilities in the Gounard's sister hotel, the Splendid, which is a bigger more modern hotel, are free to use, including the roof top pool. The space up there is limited and not really large enough to serve both hotels when busy. All in all we enjoyed our stay in the Gounard, even though there were minor things such as the remnants of what was once, I presume to be a damp problem on the fifth floor landing, which needs redecorating, but as I say, this was only minor. Considering this was a holiday we thought would not happen last November we had a great stay, I would certainly stay there again if returning to Nice.
I booked this trip as a surprise for my husband's 60th birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed our three day break, which was a return visit following an amazing stay 3 years ago. The hotel staff were welcoming and extremely helpful and our room was very clean and comfortable. We love the Baroque style and spiral staircase, plus close proximity to the centre of Nice, and enjoyed leisurely walks along the seafront, taking in the beautiful azure blue colour of the sea and the ambiance, Good breakfast and free wifi helped make our stay very enjoyable. We visited Parc du Chateau which is well worth the climb for the stunning views, and also hopped on the bus to Monaco taking in the spectacular views en route. The market place is vibrant with flowers of all colours and many different types of local produce to see and buy. Sadly we didn't manage to use the neighbouring hotel's roof top pool but it did look very inviting - maybe next time,,,,
Stayed here for 6 nights in June, lovely friendly and helpful staff, rooms were spacious and clean, breakfast selection each day was very good.Hotel is very well located for the old town, airport, station and promenade. Added benefit of being able to use the pool in the adjacent Hotel Splendid. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
Great location, 10minute walk to the beach and about a 15-20minute walk to city centre. Hotel room was large with Air-Con working well. Down side was no tea & coffee facilities. Breakfast was continental with plenty to eat.
This is a fantastic hotel. It is in a great location, about 10 minutes to the train station and 10 minutes to the promenade. The staff are absolutely excellent, very very friendly and helpful. The rooms are generous in size, air conditioned and the beds are extremely comfortable. The bathroom has a generous sized bath tub and and good sized shower recess. I really enjoyed my stay here.
The good: Location, “trying to be helpful” and accommodating stuff, a small seat-for-one balcony, a decent breakfast, wifi was there. The not so good: Some would use word “vintage”, “rustic” ,“character” to describe our room, but I would call it “aged” and “in need of repair”. The room itself was very small- probably 12X12. Even with not so big (US queen) size bed there was space for chair only on one side of bed and I had to move around sideways. Air conditioner had only one working setting: “on” and “off” as thermostat would never shut it off regardless of settings. Bathroom with no window had no vent and lucked basic hook! Entrance door would let through so much sound and light, so they had secondary door installed for bedroom. Bottom line for me: Maybe there is better rooms available, but I felt that at 200EUR per night I was taken for a ride.
Nice helpful staff, good location, breakfast fine but exactly same every day an occasional mushroom or tomato would give a bit more variety. Pool at The Splendid was great But, no self controlled air con made for very hot nights, windows open and shutters closed meant insect bites And crucially beds and bathroom clean but decor and maintenance of room very dirty Fridge must have leaked at some point wooden plinth rotten Mold growing around air con vent Black tide marks around door that's been re fitted at some point, gaps each side where hall lights came through at night Bannister rail going down the stairs to breakfast thick enough to write in from workmen in previous day ( see pictures of this and room) Given it's not high season yet there is no excuse for not having checked rooms nor cleaned communal area We booked through British Airways, don't think they have inspected for a while
Pleasant Hotel. Very friendly staff. Our room was on the top floor and had just been renovated. Very clean with a lovely new bathroom. We even had a small balcony, but just could not see the sea. Breakfast was good.
