I am happy to recommend the Looking Glass Bed and Breakfast: My old high school chums and I came together 58 years after graduation to hold a group birthday celebration and salute getting back together. The Looking Glass Bed and Breakfast was the perfect venue for our four days in Grand Haven MI. The owner, Brian, runs a first class operation in a charming old house, delightfully and comfortably furnished and well suited to our tastes. We had the run of the house and access to all the common areas, including the beautiful front deck with its unobstructed views of Lake Michigan. One thing that needs to be mentioned: the house sits at the top of a steep hill. The only access is to walk up 71 stairs or to take the electrically operated railway car (funicular). Brian has the only one on this side of the hill. Not a bad walk, if you are in shape. Always the congenial host, Brian bent over backwards to accommodate our group. He was attentive to our needs and eager to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We were smacking our lips over his delicious breakfasts, served hot and promptly prepared each morning. We were given our own refrigerator space for group meals and he allowed us to hold daily Happy Hour. Enjoying snacks and a glass of wine, we enjoyed the incredible vistas through the wide picture windows, the perfect backdrop for photos. We quickly became captive to the delights of this beach front property. He even gave the okay for a small musical group to come to entertain us on our final night cookout on the deck. When evening chill settled in, we were comfortably ensconced into the commodious living room. At our invitation, he brought his wife and toddler to join us for the meal and the music. Thus we all danced, sang and partied with abandon in the face of a glorious sunset to end a most convivial and memorable vacation.
Brian (the owner) is a FABULOUS host. He makes you feel as if the Looking Glass Bed and Breakfast is YOUR home. So welcoming, beautiful, relaxing and comfortable. He makes you feel much more than simply a guest. Looking Glass Bed and Breakfast is IMPECCABLY CLEAN!
Fabulous weekend at Looking Glass! Brian and his family were amazing hosts...our “Water” room had a million dollar view (see photo!), the food was delicious, the house has wonderful amenities, and Brian offered many great local tips and recommendations for our weekend! We will definitely be back and loved the house and our hosts!
The Inn is at the top of a steep hill. There is a funicular to get luggage up & down. The owner, Brian, is very friendly and organized. And he prepares a great breakfast. We stayed in the Water Room, which had a beautiful view over Lake Michigan. The bed was very comfortable. The sound insulation was impressive; we never heard noise from other rooms. The beach is across the street, and downtown Grand Haven is easy walking distance.
We spent two nights in the sand room. It was very pretty, very peaceful. We loved staying here, very quiet, delicious breakfasts and an amazing view. I looked in the water room, I loved it too. This was our first visit to Lake Michigan, we couldn’t have found a better place to stay! We didn’t want to leave!
Brian is a great host and the breakfasts were filling and very good!! Our room had a view of the beach and Lake Michigan. Brian also had a lot of movies to choose from to watch as well as plenty of snacks that were perfect for movie watching.. It felt like home only with a much better view :) P.S Brian if you see this our Meijers store down here did not have the coconut creme creamer that you had.. bummer..
My husband and I chose to stay at The Looking Glass for our 5th Anniversary. I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect as this was my first B&B stay but boy were we glad we chose the Looking Glass. The location is up on the side of a hill so the views off the deck and out of the house were amazing. We arrived a little early but were allowed to check right in. Brian was a great breakfast chef and had a wonderful coffee bar. We stayed in the Driftwood Room and though on the smaller side, it was nicely furnished and very cute. Just be warned that there are a lot of stairs to climb to get up to the B&B, though there is a two person trolly car that will take you and down if need be. We only used that to get our luggage up and down. The stairs were a great workout every day. I loved the location so much, there is literally only a road and parking lot between us and the beach. Downtown was only a short walk or bike ride away and the pier was just up the beach. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be coming back .
We stayed here for our 11th anniversary. Brian was helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. The views were awesome and the energy at the B&B was relaxed and easy going. A great place to chill and enjoy each other...Also, Brian is a great cook and very attentive to his guests.
This was my 3rd stay at the Looking Glass Inn, and it did not disappoint! If possible, the owner, Brian, was even more hospitable than ever. He makes his hosting duties look effortless and has a gift for making his guests feel welcome. He's very generous with his time and knowledge of the area, sharing information to make each guest's trip as successful and enjoyable as possible. The Dunegrass Room was the only one remaining when I booked. I had wanted one of the front rooms (and they are magnificent, for their wide-angle view of the lake and the pier) but I think I like the Dunegrass Room better because the room is arranged to see a large swath of the lake while lying in bed. Rather than brave the chilly mornings on the beach, it felt so luxurious to stay snugly under the covers while watching dawn arrive with the changing play of light over the water. It was a pleasant, peaceful way to start the day. Even at night, you can see the path of the moon sparkling over the lake; it's a memorable view. The Dunegrass Room also has the biggest bathroom, decorated with a clean, modern feel, and you can rent a charmingly laid-out connecting bunkroom for a small fee, if you have children traveling with you. Even the bunkroom has a partial lake view, as well as a great view of the ravine and the woods behind the dune. It would be great for birdwatchers!
My husband and I had been traveling slowly around the Upper Peninsula and then down the eastern coast of Michigan. The Looking Glass Inn was our last shore stop before our grand finale in Chicago. It was the only place besides Mackinaw Island we stayed for two nights, so it was relaxing for us and a very beautiful place, sitting up above Grand Haven State Park overlooking the lake and lighthouse. The best things about the place was our welcoming host, Brian, and the wonderful large patio deck in front, with comfortable furniture for sitting and reading or just watching the lake. There was one particularly gorgeous sunset while we were there. Out room, #5, was in the front and we had two large windows looking out on the lake which let in nice lake breezes. There were water and snacks available, and Brian cooked a hot breakfast every morning. We enjoyed conversing with the other guests at breakfast also. It was a good end to our travels in rural Michigan.
