Very dissatisfied. We had a fully paid reservation for one night at the Shalimar on Biscayne Blvd. in Miami. Upon arrival we learned of an unidentified and unexplained additional fee. After an argument over the fee, they simply cancelled our reservation. Terrible front desk service. Take this one off your list.
This was a great place to stay. The location of the motel is perfect. It is in the middle of everything that you need. Easy drive to the beaches. The customer service was excellent. The room was clean and well maintained. It was great to stay in a historical motel. The motel has a perfect blend of maintaining the historical nature of the neighborhood and modern conveniences. I certainly recommend staying at this motel.
I like to be positive so I will tell you what is good about the hotel. The room was fairly clean. That's it. The rear parking area smelled of marijuana, the office personnel greet you through bullet proof glass (very comforting). They were pleasant and efficient. The parking lots are both awkward, only one way in and out. The bathroom is "Europe tiny" and the shower curtain makes very close friends during the shower. Shampoo and soap are provided - but you may want to bring your own. Breakfast was orange juice, a banana, bagels and coffee served outside the bullet proof glass window. We chose this hotel because it was the least expensive option for the particular weekend we needed to be in town, but on a regular basis, you could find better quality for your money elsewhere.
If you believe this motel will be furnished like the staged rooms in the pictures on travel sites, you will be very disappointed! If you are looking for a Biscayne Boulevard dive motel that is fairly clean but cheaply furnished and with nothing in working order, this is your place! (I can't believe people are calling it ”nice”. Were you given a free night by the owners?) I can't comment on whether the neighborhood around the motel is safe or not. I would say that you're probably not going to get mugged on busy Biscayne although the side streets may be questionable after dark. Upon arrival, I remember thinking the neighborhood must be on the safe side...because the owners keep a microwave oven for guests outside. That's just a taste of the tackiness that is this place. No issues with check in. Got a second floor room near the owners' residence; however, the room is at the landing of the steps leading to the second level of the motel. I had to listen to people going up and down the steps all night long and the loud conversations of people congregating at the landing in the middle of the night. Biscayne Boulevard is also quite loud, even at 4 AM, with drag racers and the like, so keep that in mind when requesting a room. No rooms in this motel have a view and rooms facing the back of the property are probably quieter. The landscaping of the property is nice but the room was rather disappointing. It was sparsely furnished with the cheapest stuff the owners could find. Ikea wire office trash basket in the bathroom. Four crappy white Ikea Lack coffee tables strewn about the room - two as nightstands and two for whatever else you wanted to do with them, I guess. A cheap, tiny Ikea desk and two chairs with old upholstery that looked like they were purchased at a garage sale. The room did have a fridge, safe, and TV that got (very) basic cable channels. It took forever to switch channels - pressed the button on the remote and waited 30 seconds for the channel to change. No hangers were provided, so I couldn't hang up any of my stuff. Light bulbs were blown out all over the room, so no night light and otherwise there was half lighting. There was an ironing board but no iron in the room - perhaps available upon request? The internet speed appeared to be decent at times and barely functional at others. Climate control was barely adequate. Heat worked well but the A/C was meh. The display panel was burnt out, so it was difficult to determine to what temperature the unit was set or what mode was selected. The bathroom was reasonably clean. There was a sign stating that the Shalimar was built in 1950 and has narrow pipes. The water did not drain while I showered. No blow dryer was provided. The toiletries provided were very basic. There is free parking. I did not have trouble finding a spot...during busy Art Basel week. Housekeeping was not provided during my stay. The non-family staff who run the office overnight are very nice. If you stay here, there is a Starbucks nearly next door and another coffee shop across the street from it. It is not far from Wynwood in one direction and North Miami in the other.
This is a "budget" Miami option and should be reviewed as such. On the plus side, the location is decent and strategic if you have a car. We were able to find a parking spot every day although it did seem to fill up later at night. When we arrived, nobody was at the reception, so I had to walk around to find a staff. We had one electronic key card for the room, which had to be reset every day when we came back to the hotel, as it stopped working every day. This was a nuisance. The double-bed was on the small end and the airconditioning in the room was pretty bad. Overall, I would probably not stay here again, but I would not advise against staying here - it is a decent choice as a budget option if you can live with the mentioned downsides.
Came here not expecting too much but really? The room I booked was for a queen bed which they insisted was but was actually a full. There wasn't an ice machine. The room was clean but they didn't even have a hand towel. The room next to me had a woman outside. Breakfast was coffee with no lids and bagels. I have given it a generous 2 but would never go again.
This is an older motel but is very clean and safe. Although only staying one night, the staff was more than accommodating to my requests. Free breakfast as well. I have no complaints and look forward to staying there again.
I went to the Shalimar Hotel attracted by it's charming 50's style and because of the price, parking facilities and location, near the Miami Design District and Wynwood. I think that the owners could have made a much more charming hotel if they have used better furniture, more charming lighting fixtures and better bedding, even if it needed to be a bit more expensive because of that. They lost that opportunity. People are very corteous at the cafeteria and reception. The included breakfast is simple and honest. The room is very clean, but the air conditioning is very noisy.
we stayed here before going on a cruise. Walkable to every shop or restaurant. cute renovated old style hotel. Back rooms are not as nice as the front ones. Breakfast was basic, bagel and cream cheese.
The hotel: Simple and nice, employees are nice and always present. The location: Perfect, if you want to visit Downtown Miami, 5kms from Miami Beach, not that far, specially if you have car. Car parking available for free. The room: Simple and nice, bed was awsome, very confortable. Price: Nice and affordable. Breakfast: At first, i was afraid that a simple and minor basket couldn't be enough but, after all, that little basket has got everything that fits your needs and prevents waste, besides, you have the hability to carry it inside your room, a kind of a breakfast in bed. In summary, that little basket included a bread in shape of a donut, very tasty, a cheese, orange juice and one yogurt. Besides that, you have coffee, tea, milk, cream and butter at your disposal. Commodities: Perfect and very clean room, has refrigerator, a safe and air conditioned. Room were cleaned every day. Other: One thing that i noticed is that, biscayne boulevard is a high traffic road, so, be prepared to ear cars passing by, everytime, if that doesn't bothers you, then, this hotel is cheap and perfect, with a very nice environment. Hope to be back gain. Thank you from Portugal.
