This is a large clean well located hotel and if that's what you want it is fine. However we all know the impersonal experience of dealing with computers when you book the hotel but look forward to dealing with the friendly helpful people who run the hotel. Well the Novotel Karlsruha felt as if the computer was in charge the whole time. We booked our room as a base to sleep when visiting family. However as plans evolved our hotel in the centre of the city was clearly going to play a bigger role, and I wanted to meet , sit , talk and play cards in our room. So first request can we upgrade to a bigger room NO you booked through an agency so you can only make changes through them. No creative thoughts from staff. I solved it by remembering that on same price an option was a twin bedded room. So we changed to that and could push the beds back and have several sitting talking etc. Next problem we all met in the bar and I wanted to buy drinks and charge them to our room NO You have paid for the room in advance so you can't charge things to your room. Yet again no suggestions, yet again my initiative solved the problem by putting money on the account. I prefer smaller family run hotels where the staff don't feel they must follow restricting rules
This was my 3rd stay at this hotel and I will be back. The staff was courteous and helpful. The room was very nice and the bed was comfortable. It was a good night's sleep. I had a late dinner at the bar and the conversation was enjoyable and the food was good. The breakfast buffet has a wide selection.
Stayed in Novotel Karlsruhe City for 3 nights of business trip. It was a stay with mixed feeling. To begin with, the hotel is very nicely located. Within short walking distance between the City Center and main train station, yet, still in the more quiet part of the city, it's perfect point to explore the city and for resting afterward. The hotel seems to position itself on the higher-end of 4-star with its sleek design and furnishing. The lobby is very spacious, unfortunately, there was not enough seating, especially when you have big groups checking-in/checking-out. Check-in process was good, but the receptionists could really use some training in hospitality, communication and some particular process. As I checked-in with 2 other colleagues (3 rooms in total), there was a confusion as in which room registered to whom, all handled in very cold and unfriendly manner. Furthermore, during check-out, one of colleague had problem due to deposit and payment using debit-card (apparently it's different process to release the deposit value compared to if using credit card). The receptionist at the time insisted that everything was already okay, and the issue only got resolved upon my intervention and having another staff understanding my colleague's concern. The room is very spacious, clean, and comfortable. The only issue I had was with the very undersized television, put in very awkward location in the corner of the room. The breakfast is good albeit the limited option. During the 3 mornings I had, apart from bread and pastries, there simply was no carbohydrate like baked beans or potatoes. Like the receptionists, the restaurant staffs in general require training in courtesy. Parking is available in the basement beneath the hotel, but cost EUR 18 per day, which in my opinion should be substantially reduced for hotel guests. Overall, Novotel Karlsruhe does serve its purpose as a convenient place to stay in Karlsuhe. But to really hit its target on the higher scale of 4-star, it needs to improve its staffs.
I always enjoy the Novotel service, and this hotel was no exception. Check-in was great, and so was the room. Enough space to work comfortably. Breakfast was delicious, with a chef making eggs however you like them. I would come back.
I have enjoyed staying in this hotel. The rooms were very clean and neat. Also great hospitality and very friendly employees. The restaurant (although not cheap) offered good food in a nice environment. ALthough the hotel is already over 10 years old, it looks like brand new build !
Stopped here enroute from Strasbourg direction Frankfurt Airport. I know Karlsruhe so I purposely chose a central location that was easy enough to get to from the Autobahn. Very efficient, clean hotel. Parking garage underneath was great, although too bad the hotel does not cover parking for guests. Center of Karlsruhe easily accessible via foot although there was a lot of construction going on at the time I was there (not at hotel). Great business stop.
Checkin at 7pm, and was told no rooms available for upgrade, which was not true according to the official hotel website. The next-category room is still available online. The difference between normal room and executive room is just the free minibar and nepresso machine(aka able to switch like the intro-European flights business class), but still they don't want to offer them to platinum members. Everything I asked for is a NO. They give ONE drink coupon, stating that only the member himself can get the welcome drink. So I couldn't enjoy with a local friend if I don't spend another ten euros. No electric socket adapters for being a 4-stars business oriented hotel. Steambath broken during the stay. Accor hotels like this always make me reconsider why I'm still spending 6k+ euro on them every year. To be fair, the room is new and clean, and a late check out is given by another front desk employee, but the pillow is too soft and there's no usb hubs by the bed. I would give 3 for the hotel itself (120 euro for a weekend night), but I advice members to stay away if there's a better option.
I spent 2 nights at the Novotel Karlsruhe City in the beginning of May, the hotel is very well located between the train station and Ettlinger Tor, all the city attractions and places to visit are close to the hotel, the zoo is just few minutes walk. The hotel staff is very professional ( German quality;-)). The check in was very smooth as I dit it online. Also, as a platinum member I could have an early check in which was great for me as I had a night flight + train from Frankfurt airport.the room was clean with a big windows. The restaurant is tasty with normal prices. The only coin, is that the late check out is charged at 30 € even for platinum members, but they can keep your luggage while you enjoy your last day in the city. I highly recommend this hotel.
New hotel with open lobby bar and reception. Rooms comfortable and well appointed. Modern feel throughout. Plenty of parking but expensive considering free area just outside and hotel in the middle on nowhere. 30 minutes walk to town and restaurant/bar choices. Hotel basically only does pizza. Buffet breakfast is as good if no better than many more expensive hotels
I stayed here for the third time while playing in the 9 round Grenke Chess Open from Thursday evening till Monday evening over Easter. The open tournament had 3 sections and nearly 2,000 players while the Grenke Chess Classic had 10 players including the current world champion Magnus Carlsen who won the tournament, the number two in the world Fabiano Caruana and the former world champion Vishy Anand, all of whom stayed in the hotel with many other chess players so the atmosphere was great. The hotel is across the square from the playing hall, the enormous Schwarzwaldhalle, so it's in an ideal location for the tournament. The rooms were fine but the curtains didn't cover the windows properly and let in too much light in the morning. I had dinner in the restaurant twice although I found the menu a bit limited. The first time I had salmon fillet with pea and mint risotto (wasn't too keen on the mint) for €22.50 and panna cotta for €7.50. Another night I had asparagus quiche for €10.50 and it's a good thing I wasn't too hungry as it was the tiniest slice of quiche I'd ever seen, barely three mouthfuls. I ordered a flammkueche after that and the following evening I went to a nice Italian restaurant just behind the hotel called SAF Antipasti e Vino where the portions were more generous and the food was excellent. Mrs Bonafante on reception was very nice during my stay and upon checkout and David was helpful with my reservation.
