Gaestehaus Kaiserpassage - Hostel2.0 out of 5.0

I stayed at Gästehaus Kaiserpassage for roughly a week while waiting to get an apartment in Karlsruhe. Now I'm the kind of person who dislikes hostel-style accommodation, but this place was cheap and central - and in the end I kind of liked staying there! The Gästehaus is a very typical hostel. You stay in shared rooms (I was in a 4-bed room; the first two nights in a mixed room, the rest of my stay there was a females only room available and I moved into it) with beds and other furniture (desk, TV, big lockers for your personal stuff). Bathrooms, showers (with good water pressure!) and kitchen are shared, as well as a big patio - it's a bit shame that the weather was cold and bad, as the patio would be a fantastic place to sit and maybe enjoy a few drinks with a friend! There's also a washer and dryer that the guests may use for a small fee (6 euros includes both washer and dryer). Even though the Gästehaus is located in downtown Karlsruhe and there are lots of restaurants, shops etc. closeby, it's still conveniently located so that there is no noise from the streets. It's easy to get to the hostel as it's only a couple of blocks from Europaplatz. Anything you might need, like ATM, grocery stores (such as Aldi, Lidl and Rewe), banks, etc. are either right around the corner or at Europaplatz. I strongly recommend the recently opened Cats Café which is literally a minute's walk away ;) The staff is very friendly, cleaning service comes by every day so the common areas are very well kept. Sadly while I was staying there, there were also some people who didn't really respect the kitchen rules (didn't clean up after themselves, didn't do their dishes etc.), but since most people only stay for a day or two, these people aren't too big of a problem. All in all, Gästehaus Kaiserpassage was a nice place to stay. If you don't have a problem with sharing a bedroom and other amenities (a.k.a. know how hostels work), I would very much recommend this place! I noticed that they were completely renovating one of the rooms when I left, so it might be even nicer soon! :)
The staff is what I didnt like during my stay at this hostel. When I told the young man at the recepsion that my roommate seemed crazy ( he continuously spoke with some kind of a presence and asked me to leave the room) and I didnt felt safe sleeping there he said: It happenes ，its just bad luck.
We are disappointed.for our money we did get a totally ovepriced room with very frugal and ikea-style furniture - and NO bathroom. We have stayed for half or 2/rrds of the money in other places in Germany and felt seriously "fleeced" in Karlsruhe. Avoid. Place is clean and ok serviced. But very simple make-up.
I think the fact this place is located in such a good location just makes it great as an option to stay and get to know Karlsruhe like a local. I stayed for one week and enjoyed my stay. I think the place could improve the kitchen department a little bit since its crowded and small most of the time but funnily enough thats how you get to know the people the best. Overall i recomend this place for tourists who want to get to know Karlsruhe the best by foot.
Stayed here one night together with a big group in a 6 bed dorm. The room was kind of dirty, especially above the lockers which was the only place to put your phone etc. when having a top bunk. No electric socket available for the top bunk. We only got 2 keys for the room, which was a bit of a problem for us because you did not only need it for the room but also to get into the hostel. As for the hostel facilities I was not impressed. The reception was only manned during the day and no common room except for a small kitchen. Had a okay terrace though. The best thing was the location. It is located in the center close to restaurants, clubs and the castle, about 10 minutes with tram away from the main train station. May get a little loud during the weekend nights. Look for a small free standing elevator if you have trouble finding the hostel. In summary not a nice hostel, but not a terrible either. Works as descent budget accomendation in the city center.
We have been here 31th of October to 1st of November 2014. We wanted just a clean room to sleep right in the city center without paying a lot. Here we found it! Our low expectations were completely fulfilled and it was even better. Friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms and good showers. Thanks!
In a great location in the middle of Karlsruhe, this Hostel provides you with a clean and nice room. The bathroom is shared but are many options around the hall. It's the perfect place for a young couple.
It's more a hostel than hotel but right in the middle of the shopping zone. A lot of restaurants, Biergarten, bars and the Schlosspark are close to the hotel. The rooms get extremely hot in summer as there are no blinds - the fan in the room is a big help. Showers, kitchen and toilet all clean and very ok for this price. We will definitely come back!
This place feels like a hotel, not a hostel. It is so great. The staff is great, the rooms are clean, and inside the room there is a large personal cabinet for just your stuff that only you can open. It is about 5 minutes from the "party zone", 15 minutes from the castle, and 25 minutes from the conference centres. The rooms do get a little hot and humid because the windows don't open much, but it was definitely good enough for sleeping.
It was right in the centre of the city, very clean and comfortably. We arrived very late at night and couldn't find the carpark , which turned out to have an entrance one street over. My only downside was the unisex showers which we found offered no privacy , travelling with my teenage daughter we did not feel safe using them.
