One of the only hotel I've been to where room doors are still slammed without any door regarder! So be aware, you'll be awake at any time of the night... Room service will surprise you with extra R20 charge which is not specify on menu (after 50mn wait to get your food of course). The only good point about this place is the prime location to major big companies so business visitors keep coming. So much to improve guys!!
The bar at this hotel has great food at very reasonable prices. I ordered a snack platter for one which had chicken wings, ribs, potato wedges and delicious vegetable wraps. The taste was quite good. The cost was about €7 which I think is great value. The ambience is great. Quite relaxed and not crowded. However the service is quite slow. I waited over 15 min for. Drink order which my waiter seemed to have forgotten about. I will go back though.
I often use the Protea Midrand for business stays. Rooms are comfortable but road noise is a factor if you on the wrong side. Dinner was tasty but breakfasts here need work. Compared to protea umhlanga this hotel has much to work on in the breakfast department. Send your team to Umhlanga to see what can be done with a similar setup. Coffee quality needs work too. I look forward to seeing these improvements next time.
I stayed there for a couple of nights on business. The room is clean, large enough, the mattress is really good and the view in the garden is good. Staff, restaurant menu and breakfast buffet are OK. They offer an airport shuttle service for a fee. It is conveniently located for business as many companies are in the surroundings. Probably not good for holidays.
I have used this hotel many times in the past because of its convenience between Johannesburg and Pretoria but this time will more than likely be my last. The service in the restaurant was diabolical. The first waiter did not understand the wine menu and took 23 minutes to advise us they did not have the wine we wanted but they actually did have it in stock. The second waitress tried to resolve the issue but did not return. Eventually I approached the front office and asked for some assistance and they again tried. After 50 minutes in the restuarant we got the original bottle of wine we ordered. Our guests had arrived in the meantime. It took about 20 minutes to get them wine glasses. We then had to ask for food menus and ordered the food. The head waiter by now was alerted to our concerns and advise us that the butternut was sour and we should not order that. We gave up and asked them what they had and what we could eat. The food was reasonable but the staff are diabolical and clearly have not been trained and the hotel is either battling financially as they are unable to provide the menu items or they just do not care.
I loved staying at this hotel. It is very central for business in both JHB and Pretoria. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Check in was effortless. The rooms are renovated and very clean. Room service was great. It is nice to sit on the balcony by the pool and work after a long day.
Excellent staff at Reception who are always willing to assist and accommodate requests especially my need to have a room close to reception. Housekeeping is brilliant and rooms are clean. Bar staff work hard at night trying to get bar meals out timeously. The bar menu needs a facelift and extra staff at night may help. Restaurant staff are always so friendly and welcoming at Breakfast. Would love to try the Camelot Spa, especially in the evenings after work, but they are constantly fully booked. This hotel is my home away from home and the hotel staff here are stunning.
visited this establishment in Feb 2017. Location is good. Reception on arrival was good. Overpriced. Prices exclude breakfast. Security very good. Parking secure. Rooms...Nothing to shout at when considering the price you're paying. A recommendation Only if you're unable to find accommodation at short notice.
This my first time visiting South Africa Johannesburg the hotel is out of Johannesburg nice area good for meeting and conferences there's some place near by like mall of Africa and Nelson Mandela square
Booked for proximity to business meetings- Will not repeat and would not recommend. Negative experience began before check in when I requested hotel car pick up from Gautrain station. Reception staff (difficult to understand on phone and repeatedly interrupted me mid-requests for help) confirmed pick-up for 11:15; colleagues & I waited at station until 11:30 when Reception phoned back stating the car had just been ordered, that I should write down driver's number to call him directly, and explained they would need to call back to confirm pricing (though R450.00 rate is clearly stated on hotel's web page). Colleagues and I waited until 11:40, still no car car. I dialed driver directly (also very very difficult to understand on the phone) who explained he was "about 15 minutes away", meaning we would remain without a car until near 12:00. Promptly ordered a car via Taxify (arrived promptly within 4minutes, ride to hotel only R90.00) and called Reception to cancel car service. Reception insisted the hotel car was already on the way , refused to listen when I explained that I had spoken with the driver who himself confirmed he was still 15min. away, and took no consideration for fact that hotel car service had made our group late for business meetings. Upon check-in, our group was met with rude, unprofessional, inefficient front desk staff with poor English language skills. The staff member (Pontsho) who handled my check- in loudly remarked to her Reception colleague that I was "the difficult guest who had ordered and cancelled a driver." She bluntly asked "what service did you use instead?" I confirmed we successfully used Taxify "Taxify? Hmm." while she rolled her eyes and scoffed. She slowly took another 10minutes to complete a portion of the check-in and then explained she would need to phone housekeeping to confirm if my room would be ready so I should have a seat. [Note: I had called 1.5 days before arrival to confirm early check-in, hotel had confirmed room would be fully free and available for check-in at 11:30.] I stepped away to let my colleague check-in (he too had a significantly poor check-in), and Pontsho carried on with chatting with the Reception staff with no interest in calling Housekeeping. I had to flatly ask her to promptly call Housekeeping after waiting 10min. without any help. She did so and slowly provided the room key. By far one of the worst check-in experiences and least professional staff I have ever come across. Will continue to travel monthly to Midrand to work, will never again book a Protea Hotel after this experience.
