Sadly, this place has gone downhill in the past ten years. We stayed here ten years ago with our four kids and their families. We came back this past October with our kids to celebrate our 50th anniversary. When our daughter, who stayed in the honeymoon suite, turned down their sheets the first night, there were black stains on the sheets and the pillows. Even though the linens were promptly changed, the pillows smelled moldy inside the pillow cases. They had to sleep with towels over the pillows to cover the smell. We found a black substance on the wall behind the bed. The wall was painted to look like an elaborate headboard. When pillows were leaned against the wall, this black substance continued to rub off onto them the second night. We all left after the 2nd night when this issue in the honeymoon suite had not been resolved. There were also many areas on the exterior walls that were cracked and looked like there was black staining present. We found other accommodations for the remainder of our trip. We eventually received a refund for the remaining five nights for all four rooms that had paid upon checkin. They also refunded the first two nights for the honeymoon suite.
Got to say that it has taken me this long to write as I don't want to see a big influx of people ruin our quaint home away from home...sigghhh... how greedy can I get?? Truthfully you have to be there to believe that you can have have so much for such a good price. And to be treated so so so well by all the staff. They are what makes either Sun and Moon or Caracol truly and incredible vacation. WE WILL be back again and again and again!!!!
I was back at Casa Sun and Moon from February 13th to the 20th this year and love this place. The rooms are basic and it is a smaller hotel but the location and the staff sure makes for it. It is sitting right on top of La Madera and walking distance to it all. Most of the best restaurants in Zihua are located right next to it on Calle Adelita. Carlos, the hotel manager, will take care of you at their sister hotel across the street, Hotel Zihua Caracol. They remember you from year to year and have awesome staff taking good care of your needs. A nice small infinity pool is at Sun and Moon and you can use the slightly larger pool at Zihua Caracol too. Sun and Moon does not have a restaurant but there is a restaurant on the rooftop of Zihua Caracol for dinner giving you very nice views of the bay and area and for breakfast they have another location in their hotel. At Sun and Moon on each of the 3 floors you will find an open kitchen if you feel like cooking or preparing cocktails. There are fridges in the rooms as well.
When we booked we were given the impression of having an ocean view, it turned out our room (a junior suite)was at the back of the hotel over the street, it has a very small balcony approximately 3 ft X3ft from which there was a small peel at the ocean. We felt quite decieved and asked for another room which we got for a substantial increase in cost. There are perhaps two rooms which have a decent view of the ocean. The hotel is in quite rough condition: majors patches of tiles missing in the pool acrea, cracks and peeling paint throughout, only warm water for showering, had to heat water on the hot plate for shaving and the furniture is rickety beyond function, rustic or quaint is one thing but junk is another.
We had stayed here for 3 weeks every year for 10 years in a row, in the 3rd floor master suite. Not fancy, but a fair price for the view and room. Carlos always promised to not give away "our room" in February without checking with us. We always paid a deposit for 2 nights. Last year, 2016, we went to pay our deposit for 2017, and lo and behold, the 3rd floor master suite was unavailable for all of January and February for any 3 weeks straight. We finally agree to arrive on January 7, much earlier than we prefer, but we were able to get the first floor master suite for 3 weeks by doing do. We again paid a 2 night deposit. Also, beginning in 2016, the hotel has signs everywhere that the entire property is now non-smoking. When we checked in in 2016, Carlos said, "No problem, you can smoke on the master suite balcony". Many people were still smoking on the 2nd level and by the pool that year (2016). Ok, when I asked about 2017, he also said, "Ok, no problem". Well, this past September, I began to get nervous over a simple verbal reassurance from Carlos that I could still smoke on the private terrace of the first floor master suite. So I wrote and asked for written assurance that smoking would be allowed only on the private terrace. The response I got? NADA!! ZIPPO!! NOTHING!! I repeatedly wrote (and I know I had the right address after 10 years, plus I was "responding" to previous e-mails from the hotel). With growing frustration, I asked for a refund, and advised the hotel that we would be staying elsewhere. We did not get a refund of about $200!! The hotel certainly has the right to ban smoking wherever it desires. Just own the policy and treat loyal customers with some courtesy. This place felt so much like a home away from home for so many year. It's sad that the relationship ended this way. We did wind up finding a lovely place on La Ropa for very little more money, and many more amenities, with an outstanding owner and manager. Yes, we've booked Villas San Sebastian for next year, and hopefully, many more years to come!!!
We had a wonderful time at Casa Sun and Moon. We had a suite- which had a small kitchen, which was very nice. Also, a separate bedroom/bath area, and a private balcony that overlooked the ocean. It's very well located- within walking distance of many fine eating places and downtown. Situated on a cliff overlooking the ocean, and just a few steps down to La Madera beach. The hotel itself is nothing fancy. But it is very clean and well run. Security guard Jose became a friend, and he kept the place safe. We will be back.
Close to the ocean great view nice people, good security, clean, really enjoyed staying there will go back great place I would recommend it to everyone Christmas is a very busy time and lots of fireworks
We have been coming to this hotel every year for the last 8 years. They never cease to amaze us with the quality of service and the beautiful location! Unless you get a suite, the rooms aren't very big, but they accommodate all our needs. If you have the option to include daily breakfast - DO IT! It's the best Mexican breaky you'll find in Zihua (with some traditional options as well). You have access to a beautiful pool overlooking the ocean, as well as a second pool and all the amenities at the adjoining Hotel Zihua Caracol. There's a rooftop patio with the best margaritas and mojitos in town!
We booked a suit here witch for us worked out great for the sake of private cooking Most guest rooms have shared cooking here with a fridge in every room The suits and master suits offer private cooking The suits are very basic yet function able The cooking is supper basic Two burner stove top Coffee pot and blender Small fridge with even a smaller freezer It works but you have to shop a lot more often The room is relatively quite Beds are standard hard Mexican beds Staft is very good but not as friendly as smaller hotels Our room was always clean The pool was well milky most of the time and had a lot of tiles missing The hotel at frist glance looks very run down Surprisingly it fuctioned quite well There is another pool across the road whitch guests can use that is much nicer than the Sun and moon pool For a good price this is a place to lay your head
This could be a great hotel it has a wonderful situation over looking the bay and just a few steps from the beach. But our room was as basic as possible and worst of all stunk of mould. If they opened the door every day when no one was using it and irked it out with fresh air would make such a difference. The wifi only works in reception across the road. I have paid much less than this a night for good wifi in my room. Breakfast was nice but charged extra for. The swimming pool and grounds were very good. There was much nicer place next door for about the same price.
