After a full day at the nearby beach we went here for dinner. The restaurant is 10 meters from the sea so we could hear the waves. Music was low. Making for a pleasant ambience. Very pleasant service. Tuna steak was delicious.
I was underwhelmed by the hotel constantly, the layout of the hotel is fine, but our room was very basic for what we paid, no view of any kind, service crazy slow, and food pretty whatever plus they kept running out of basic stuff, and just like ordering a michelada by the pool took a good 20 minutes. My fiance booked this trip and I was aware of where we were going I just was not aware of what we had paid to stay, at hundreds and hundreds a night, im expecting first class all the way.
We were fortunate enough to be able to get married on this fabulous island! We had the entire hotel to ourselves, filled with our friends and family. The grounds are stunning and the staff was more than accommodating. They were SO helpful to me in the months leading up to the wedding and they made sure we had EVERYTHING we needed from the moment we arrived. I could go on and on about how wonderful the service was. We had guest from A to Z that attended- from world travelers to the folks that don't get out much and everyone had great things to say about this place and most intend to return! Holbox in itself is such a neat island and Villas Flamingos will be my forever go to! I am a huge foodie and love trying new things- I was super impressed with all of the food I had on the island. We were there for almost two weeks, so we tried so many different options and loved it all! We are now planning our anniversary trip in April and can't wait to see the renovations at Villas Flamingos and reminisce on some of the happiest times!
After spending a few nights in December at Hotel Flamingo I think it was overpriced, the pictures all look very nice and the hotel is cute the beach is wonderful, but there isnt much to do, our room was very hot and the bathroom small with an uncomfortable bed, and the food was okay in the hotel. We paid way too much in my opinion for what we got in exchange.
First time in Holbox and found it expensive for Mexico and not that great. The rooms are okish but not as nice as the pictures. The Pool was closed for repairs and the girl at the reception was very unhelpful. I would only recommend a very short stay here.
This year again we went back to Villas Flamingo for 5 days during Christmas holidays. That was the first time we were back in, during winter saison....As expected, that was a magic moment! We were staying with our son and friends (a familly of 5) The room are more than perfect, superbly decorated & super clean. Yvan and his team as always..... very kind, super helpful and extremely pro active. Breakfast has improved a lot from the last time we went and is now absolutely fine. One word for this very special place : Heaven We will come back for sure, this was our 3rd stay.......Leila, Stephane & Ayman
We decided to pay extra and stay at Flamingos to enjoy the unique setting that is Hotbox. We were not sorry. Flamingos is easy to get to via the quaint golf cart taxis used locally, yet it is far enough away from the downtown hustle-bustle as to be completely quiet and relaxing. Our rooms had their own extra-large jacuzzi pools. The food was excellent. If you want to go luxe on Hotbox, this is your place.
The view from our room was great. Let’s start with that. We had a great view. Some more minor issues - the shower was weird and impractical and our room had no closets, shelves or hangers. After a few days, our suitcases were a couple of piles of clothes on the floor. Fine. Vacation. We can deal. The bigger issue was the food and service. There were very few choices for food and the breakfast each morning was exactly the same. There wasn’t a single thing we ate which was memorable. The fruit was amazingly bad, either past ripe or tough (pineapple). This was disappointing as we figured Mexican fruit would be amazing. Yes, it all has to come via ferry. We know this but the same ferry carts people and other food every day. We literally had guacamole every day and we can get better guacamole in NY. The staff were friendly and for the most part, attentive. Service is even slower than you’d imagine. But the major issue is that there should be a flat rate gratuity on everything. The current system has servers running after you after the free breakfast (and for every purchase) with a receipt so you can sign the zero balance receipt from breakfast and add a tip. Tips are important! Never would argue that, but change the system. I imagine some of the European guests may balk at gratuity automatically added but it would make the service a lot more genuine and not transactional and motivated 100% by the tip. I often felt that folks were nice only for the tip. One day I was hunted down to be asked if the tip I left the night before at dinner was correct - apparently a zero was missing. This was not the case so I’m not certain what happened between the staff at closeout but having waited on tables before, I never get a tip wrong. I felt embarrassed, for both of us. Last, I asked for an hour or so late for checkout. I was told someone was coming in and they need to clean the room. We ended up staying at the hotel and no one entered the room. We were told it would be $50 more for a late checkout. After some $4000 for a week, I was offended that they couldn’t throw in an hour. Overall, Holbox, the island itself, was very very disappointing. The beach was fine, water was murky and overall it was really dirty everywhere. Crazy as it’s supposed to be a nature preserve. And we didn’t see any flamingos, not sure why they are all over the website. One staffer: “oh they’re never here near the hotel”. Friends took a “flamingo tour” and saw one. Mosquitos will eat you alive, but this has been written about. Sewage smells are pervasive. There’s not much in town. If you drink, you’re likely fine there. If you want more out of a vacation, you may want to explore other options. I’ve lived in Latin America, speak Spanish and Portuguese fluently and have traveled to 10+ Latam countries. I’ve backpacked Bolivia and hitchhiked in Chiapas. So this is not coming from a fussy gringo. Before the swaths of Holbox defenders attack this review and say “Holbox isn’t for everyone” or “maybe you needed Tulum” I just suggest that you don’t quite believe the hype on this place. There’s much better places to see - and relax - and after the money we spent to get there and the room cost of $550+ a night, it pains me to think of where we could’ve gone instead. We won’t be back.
We stayed here for four nights in mid December. I had researched almost all hotels in Holbox before deciding we would push the boat out a little and stay somewhere more luxurious, and boy was that the right thing to do. The hotel is right at the end of the island so nice and secluded, however a taxi to the town is only 50 pesos, so definitely wasn’t an issue. We stayed in room 25 and it was absolutely gorgeous, the beds were so comfy, the shower luxurious and the view was amazing. The breakfast included was fantastic, and the staff were incredible. Our daughter had an ear infection while here and the staff were incredibly helpful and translated the instructions on the antibiotic box (it’s different than UK medicine). They even made a point of coming to find us to ask how she was the next day. We ate lunch and dinner here once and the food was wonderful, and we found the prices to be very reasonable. Holbox is definitely a place to chill out in the day, but the hotel had bikes, kayaks and paddle boards free to use, definitely a plus. In the evening we ventured into town where it comes alive. Lots of great restaurants and bars. The island is definitely family friendly. Would we go back? Absolutely, we are trying to fit it in to our next visit to Mexico. Any disappointments? Yes, only that we didn’t stay longer. Don’t hesitate to book this hotel.
I took us forever to write this review because we have been on cloud 9 since we got back. We got married at Villas Flamingos and Ivan was an amazing host, making it a super direct, easy, and amazing wedding. He made the decisions easy, two options - dinner with lobster or without (we went without). If you are down to earth people looking for an amazing time, whether it’s your wedding or not, this is the place to feel like you are family (and we are planning our reunions there). The island is lovey, the people at Villas Flamingos truly care and Ivan and his people took care of all of our family and friends and was so accommodating to all of our guests. Everybody got a drink when they needed it and Luis went above and beyond having fun creating concoctions for our group. Most people don’t remember wedding food but it was something that a year later people still talk about (especially the octopus). The beach was relaxing when you needed it and everyday we had fun games to play and those who wanted to could bike to town. It’s an island where you go to be and hang with friends - the place is amazing and the people there are lovely. A short golf cart ride from town ensures that the hotel keeps a chill vibe, with great food, great drinks, and lovey people. If you are easy going, looking for the perfect place to relax, and if you want to get married with a small group of friends and not make all the silly decisions about things that don’t matter - while having an amazing dinner, great service, fantastic drinks, and the time of your life... well, take the trek to Villas Flamingos and ask for Ivan. Can’t thank the whole crew there enough. Eli + Erin
