Best Ireland itinerary for 10 days

Day 1: Start your journey in Dublin

Land at Dublin’s international airport and head to the city center via taxi, coach or bus to start your Ireland vacation in the country’s capital. If you’re searching for what to do in Ireland, look no further than Dublin:

  • Go on a guided walking tour of iconic sights including Trinity College and Dublin Castle
  • See how the famous stout is brewed at the Guinness Storehouse
  • Tour Kilmainham Gaol (book ahead)
  • Enjoy the pubs and live music of the famous area known as Temple Bar

Where to stay: Choose a luxury hotel such as The Westin Dublin, an historic landmark, or a more budget-friendly hotel such as The Clarence located in Temple Bar, on the River Liffey.

Transportation: Dublin’s compact city center and Old Town is easily explored on foot. If your feet get tired, there are plenty of taxis, as well as light rail and bus services.

Day 3: Killarney

Relax and enjoy Ireland by train on your journey from Dublin to Killarney, your base for the next 4 days.

  • Killarney’s bustling High Street, the main shopping strip
  • Killarney House and Gardens, just a 5-minute walk from the center of town
  • Killarney Brewing Company, a 5-minute walk from town
  • Book an Irish Whiskey Experience, which can include cheese or chocolate pairings

Where to stay: The magnificent Lake Killarney Hotel is on the shores of the lake just outside town, or, for something more cozy, consider Ardree House Bed and Breakfast, a 10-minute walk from town.

Transportation: Trains depart regularly from Dublin’s Heuston station to Killarney. Allow up to 4 hours for the journey. There are also coach services direct to Killarney.

Day 4: Killarney National Park

  • Explore Ross Castle on the edge of Lough Leane and take a trip on the lake in an open boat
  • See the Torc Waterfall
  • Take a guided tour of 19th-century Muckross House and nearby Muckross Abbey

Transportation: The Killarney Shuttle Bus service stops at all the major sites in the national park. It departs from the tourist office in town. If the weather is fine, rent a bike and cycle through the park.

Day 5: Skellig Michael and the Ring of Kerry Daytrip

  • Travel around the Ring of Kerry, a 111-mile loop that goes from the mountains to the sea
  • Stop in the quaint villages of Kenmare and Sneem
  • Join a boat tour to the island of Skellig Michael, departing from the Portmagee marina

Transportation: Several tour companies offer trips to Skellig Michael between May and October.

Day 6: Spend the day on the Dingle Peninsula

Just a 1-hour drive from Killarney is the Dingle Peninsula, one of Ireland’s most astounding landscapes.

  • Inch Beach
  • Drive up Dunmore Head to see views across to the Blasket Islands
  • Have dinner in the coastal town of Dingle

Transportation: For days 6-10 of your Ireland itinerary, we recommend you rent a car in Killarney so you can take your time on this part of the dramatic West Coast. Rental cars can be combined with hotels and flights in one of our Ireland package deals.

Day 7: Limerick & Doolin

  • Explore Limerick’s Old Town to see John’s Square and King John’s Castle
  • Listen to some live music in a pub—Doolin is regarded as the home of traditional Irish music

Where to stay: We recommend staying in Doolin, either at the delightful Doolin Inn, with its hearty breakfasts or at the Cahermaclanchy House, a B&B located a few minutes’ drive outside the village.

Day 8: Cliffs of Moher

  • Walk the hiking trail along the coastline of the Cliffs of Moher
  • Visit the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Center if only for the highest viewpoint of the cliffs

Day 9: Aran Islands Daytrip

While there are 3 Aran islands, a daytrip is best spent exploring the largest, Inishmore.

  • Walk to the impressive prehistoric fort of Dún Aonghasa
  • Stop to see the colony of seals near Kilmurvey Beach
  • Visit the Aran Sweater Market in Kilronan

Transportation: Ferries depart from Doolin out to the Aran Islands. The trip takes about 40 minutes each way. Once on the island, you can rent bicycles to get around.

Day 10: Drive Back to Dublin

Break up the 3-hour journey with a stop in the city of Athlone to visit Athlone Castle.
