Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin5.0 out of 5.0

This very charming hotel in old asian kolonial style is like a dream. However, the service is very up and down. When it is five star in the Elephant bar, it is a disaster in the beach restaurant. We had to wait an hour for a very casual dish, the drinks came out wrong and all around us, tables were full of uncleared plates and leftovers.
Exellent staff make this hotel the best from the warm friendly welcome to the very well kept grounds it would take a lot to better the food is also very good the breakfast is exceptional with a vast choice If you can go for a delux pool villa l would recomend this hotel for your stay in Thailand as it is on the beach and close to the town centre
I just want to start this review by saying that we have been to Thailand 5 times and we are fairly fussy. We booked the top premium pool villa for our family of 4. This included access to the club which allows you access to some food and drink during your stay. On arrival we were greeted in the lobby and did the usual passport and credit card bit. We were them taken to another reception area for the villas where they wanted to do the credit card but again but I refused as they had already taken a copy. It was difficult to check in when the lovely lady didn’t really speak English. We were then taken to our pool villa and we were not happy to say the least. The villa was divided into two, main bedroom area and then a separate living area with two beds made from tiny ‘sofas’ for the two children. These were covered in ants and had to be locked independently from the main area. I refused to let the children stay here and after some complaints I was given another smaller villa for me and one child to sleep in until they could move us to somewhere more suitable. This took 2 nights of our family being separated and many more complaints. They tried to clean the room numerous times and told me the ants were gone but in the end found an ants nest under the villa. I felt like they were getting annoyed and that I was complaining over nothing. Not great service from he outset. We were then moved to adjoining junior suite and premium deluxe rooms and from that point on our holiday started. These rooms were very grand, clean and well situated. We would certainly recommend these rather than a pool villa. The pool is not usable as it is tired and dirty and the main pool area is much better. The pools are not heated but apart from that are satisfactory although service round the pool was hit and miss. The garden pool is much quieter but not suitable for children. Food in the hotel is expensive and we would recommend access to club when booking rooms. There is enough food and drink here for the daytime and a short walk out of the hotel at night takes you into Hua Hin where there are numerous bars and restaurants. The beach is not a private beach and there are horses which is a little off putting. No loungers on the beach either so hard to relax. This is not a hotel for beach lovers. The staff here were ok but not the usual Thai hospitality in my view. No smiles or attention to detail. The club access whilst good was not as I had imagined. No special check in as advertised and the club service was just ok. All in all we had a good Christmas here but I would not return to this hotel.
Excellent hotel with well kept grounds with fascinating topiary and tame hoopoe birds! Spacious well positioned rooms, ours overlooked the beach. Beware when dining outside the Coast resturant after dark as the mozzies are a problem. Overall a great hotel, shame about the resort itself which seems geared to extracting the last Baht from the tourists(ATM charges- 220 Baht!)
Having visited the centara in ko samui we chose this hotel again in hua hin and was not dissapointed. We had a lovely room at the front with pool/sea view. Although rooms are quite dark (due to all the dark wood) they are nice and spacious and spotlessly clean. The maids are amazing and can't do enough for you. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the grounds of the hotel are stunning. All the bushes/trees are shaped into animals it's amazing. Everywhere is so well kept. Breakfast is vast, everything you could want, English/Thai, full cooked breakfast, fruit, cakes and pastries, pancakes etc. Etc. Eat inside or out. We did not eat dinner in the hotel but others said restaurants were lovely. As the main town full of bars shops and restaurants were on the doorstep we ate out every evening. You can eat cheap or expensive, too many places to choose from. There were two pools at the hotel, you do have to get up early and put towels down if you want to be around the pool though. If you don't mind being on the grass in garden area then there's no need. Wasn't impressed with this really as we expected to be laying on the beach on sunbeds, (best part of our yearly two week holiday in the November sun laying on the beach, nice breeze, people watching etc) there were no beds on beach. Apparently to do with a government rule. So we either had to lay round the pool or lay on towels on the beach. We both have bad backs so can't do that. And we didn't pay all that money to be uncomfortable. Kind of spoiled our holiday, and sadly as lovely as the hotel is, I would not go back for that reason. I don't like laying around a pool when there's a beach on the doorstep and as lovely as it is, lovely white soft sand the public can use the beach outside too so it's full of people who tend to leave a lot of rubbish too. The sea was quite choppy the whole time so didn't go in swimming, not sure if sea is blue when water is calm but wasn't a nice colour like it is in other places we've been, ko samui Phuket phi phi. The drinks are quite expensive at the hotel as you have to pay a tax on top, but they have a couple of happy hours, so worth getting drinks then. I would recommend this hotel if you don't mind no beds on beach, as it really is lovely. But I will not be going back.
Friday night, Centara reef and beef buffet at Coast restaurant is the place to be. Lovely service and a great selection of different food amongst other oysters, prime rib, shrimp, lobster, sushi, good selection of appetizers and beautiful dessert table. Now, I am happy and super full :)
As a sucker for colonial luxury I have to admit to being unusually predisposed to liking the Centara. It certainly did not disappoint! From the tasteful décor and lush, well-maintained grounds to the impeccably attentive service and delicious breakfast offerings, this place ticked all the right boxes. Just the building alone is unlike anything else you are likely to encounter in Thailand. The only downside is its popularity, particularly with old-age retirees (their greatest crime being their tendency to hog the dining tables at breakfast to the point of impropriety). Will definitely be returning, though perhaps during the off-season.
The hotel is ideally situated close to the town centre, the rooms are a good size, the hotel staff were attentive and courteous however the whole place is infested with mosquitos, bedrooms, club lounge, bars there is no respite, I reported this to reception and whilst they say they fumigated the room this didn’t stop bites to my baby daughters face, my wife and over 20 bites to my head, body, legs and feet and yes we all had mosquito repellent on. Unfortunately this spoilt our experience and we won’t be ever returning.
Another very relaxing 2 weeks at the Centara. The location of this resort is ideal - next to the beach and within a short walk to the town. Hotel gardens, swimming pools and facilities are all kept in pristine condition. We booked a de-luxe suite with club facilities through Kenwood Travel. The suite allocated (200) was excellent; conveniently positioned on an upper floor with good sized bedroom, huge living room and large balcony overlooking one of the gardens, with the sea in the distance. The Club facilities are well worth the extra - complementary breakfast, snacks/soft drinks all day, afternoon tea and evening alcohol. If you intend to make use of the hotel restaurants, bar or spa facilities then the Hotel Baht deposit scheme is worth using - pre-payment at the beginning of your stay effectively gives you a 30% discount on food, beverages and spa. Plenty of friendly, efficient staff are on hand to give a luxury experience. A few things that detracted from scoring the resort "excellent" for this stay: - Housekeeping was a little tardy for the first few days, but this improved after a few words with reception. - During our stay there were a number of wedding receptions. Very nice to see but it did mean that the beach restaurant and some other facilities were closed to guests at short notice - Changes to hotel policy mean that "Centara Points" are no longer awarded if you book your stay through a travel agent; only available if you book direct
What a joke this place is. We sat down for afternoon tea at 14:30 hrs on 26th December 2017. Of the 3 packages they offered 2 were sold out. We ordered 2 pots of tea as the package they had left was a Thai take on the afternoon tea. This did not appeal to us so ordered 2 pots of tea. After half an hour one pot turned up. So we said we ordered two so waited for an other half hour still nothing. So I went to the counter and asked for next pot. A pot was brought over with no cups. The service was the worst I have ever experienced in my life which has compelled me to write this review, my first review and i am angry.
