We loved the Dolphin Bay Hotel. It was reasonably priced, walking distance to town, and had the best coffee we had on the island. If you are looking for deluxe accommodation, this is not for you. However, our room was comfortable, clean and had a kitchen. Coffee was free and available all day as were apple bananas and papaya. The building stays cool with the fans, ventilation, and the mountain breeze. I would go back.
There's something really special about this hotel that keeps me coming back. It's a basic hotel, but very well maintained, clean, has large rooms, great people and service, and delightful touches like the coffee, banana bread, and papayas every morning. It's in a residential area that's easy walking to downtown, and surrounded by lush greenery. I love falling asleep to the sound of frogs (?) in the nearby river, and sitting on the lanai with my morning coffee. If you are a fussy person with high expectations, this is not the hotel for you. But for everyone else, highly recommended.
We have been staying here for 25 years. It is a really nice place with a beautiful garden and kitchenettes in all the rooms. John, the owner is a mine of information and mapped out the areas affected by the eruption of Kīlauea last year. Many routes are closed and we would have got lost if we’d tried to set out by ourselves. The hotel is within walking distance of Hilo.
Petting Opie the cat may result in a new BFF (best furry friend) who thinks she needs to follow you to (and into) your room. Reading other reviews gave me an accurate idea of what to expect - on the older side but clean and well-maintained. No AC, but the ceiling fan kept the room comfortable. Having the windows open did mean the coqui frogs were really loud, so a light sleeper might have trouble, but to me they were white noise that drowned out any sound from adjoining rooms.
My husband and I have stayed here many times, and we would never go anywhere else in Hilo! John Alexander (the owner) can not only give you information about the popular places to visit, but he also gives tips on where to go to avoid the crowds. He provides us with new adventures every trip including hikes through the lava, scenic roads to travel, new beaches to explore, and volcano updates. All of his staff are friendly and helpful. There is no better way to end a day then sitting out on our lanai at Dolphin Bay, enjoying the peace and quiet and beautiful garden. Mahalo to John and his staff! Lynn
Stayed three nights at the Dolphin Bay and enjoyed it. Nice room with a living area, kitchen & bedroom. Very nice informative host and helpful, friendly workers. Great WIFI. Coffee, bread and fresh fruit available for breakfast. We will stay there again when in Hilo.
This is a family run hotel. It is clean and cozy and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They have coffee, fresh fruit and wonderful banana available in the morning. Good internet in the rooms. Walking distance to the ocean and waterfront shops . Lots of restaurants with a wide variety of choices of types of food. The open market is on the waterfront area, lots of fun and good food with sovereigns to buy. This was our fourth time to stay at the Dolphin Bay Hotel.
My daughter and I really enjoyed this quaint hotel. It was so relaxing and quiet. It was spotless! The breakfast was unique by picking your own banana from the stalk and enjoying the other fruit provided! The banana bread was WONDERFUL - could have eaten it 3 meals a day! As we left we had a double rainbow. Hope it means we will return soon. The restaurants they recommended were A+++++. I loved Hilo and this hotel.
Loved this hotel, it was like a step back in time for us, the front desk lady chatted with us and took us directly to our room. The bed had white pressed sheets, and everything in the room was spotlessly clean. The kitchenette was also spotless and it was just such a pleasure to stay here. The friendly staff and the cleanliness were the 2 outstanding things we appreciated about this place. It is also located in a quiet residential area but within easy walking distance to downtown activities.
First of all, this boutique hotel is like most other, with a small but adequate kitchenette, but we were not there to spend much time in the room. The staff are expert travel guides in their own right and offered accurate and helpful directions for places we wanted to stay.
