The hotel may have had a recent make over in some areas but overall it is still looking a little tired and dated. Room 201 has the extractor fan from the downstairs restaurants attached to the outside wall and was very noisy, however the unit was shut down at 10.00pm Friday night (as discussed with hotel staff) and 10.30pm Saturday night, but if you spent any time in the room during the day it would have been annoying. It was a very large room, but needed more furniture and the only two chairs provided were very uncomfortable to sit on and meant having to sit on the bed to watch TV and there were no instructions on how operate the TV , and following a complaint about not being able to get TVOne for news, we were informed that TV3 was also not available and the only news channel for local news was CNN ! Seems strange that a hotel cannot get either of these "free to air" channels. The distance for viewing from the bed really needed a much larger screen for the TV. The shower curtain in the bathroom was too small and needed to be at least double the size to prevent excessive water spray on the floor. There was however a large thermostatically controlled heater provided which worked well. Be sure to request a car park prior to arriving as there is a hotel car park on site however it is very small and has very tight space available. The hotel is very centrally located and close to restaurants, bars & cafes....etc. The foyer had a large chandelier which would have added a nice touch to the ambience of the place but was never lit the entire time we were there which was a shame.

Will certainly be back to enjoy this great hospitality experience again.would definitely recomend all visitors to try it as the rooms were huge and they represent true hospitality. The bathroom was very clean and tidy and smelt fresh. me and my family experienced the best value for money. location was perfect and handy. Not far from riverside walk. staff was very helpful and friendly. The only problem we faced was not having the car park. But that was fine as long as we got one outside.

We had to quickly book a hotel for one night's sleep and we found this last minute deal claiming the cheapest in the city. The hotel was grand and the rooms were big enough. We felt like traveling back in mid 90's. Staff was very kind to provide us with a car park by moving his own car. He also gave us many useful information about our next destination - Napier. The small cafe just next to the hotel was just awesome. The walls were thin so it was a bit noisy from the other room.

It was our first time in Hamilton and upon reaching the hotel were greeted by a young Indian guy. We were a bit upset by knowing that there were no car parks available but we soon found a park right in front of the hotel (free till 9 pm). The room was nice and cosy. The attached bath tub was definitely a plus. The wifi worked well for us. The hotel might need to upgrade their television channels. Everything else was fine and acceptable. HIghly recommended.

Avoid if you can, this hotel is billed as moderately priced boutique accommodation in the CBD . If Boutique means one TV fuzzy channel ( 3 days of promises to fix it) paint patches/holes in the plaster throughout the hotel , noisy plumbing , bathroom walls are thin so very noisy in the mornings , aging and broken furniture in a tired old hotel without air con then yep it's boutique all right. The staff are nice enough but the place is just not up to 2 stars ( not the 4 star rating on some booking sites) If forced to take ear plugs , warm clothes and tough it out.

well never thought i would enjoy hamilton but got this hotel on a cheapy and we had a wonderfull time, the park is superb, lots of nice places to eat,but i was a bit dissapointed with the hotel as we entered through the back where the car park is and nearly just drove out again, this is no ritz but a lovely old building if the owners spent a bit of money this could be a diamond it was ok as we just wanted somewhere to lay our weary heads and for the money we paid we where not expecting 5 stars so just remeber this when you get a cheapy,

The room was big No issue , but not what we had paid for, poor lighting it had condensation so bad the walls had black mould on them and there was so much black /green mould on the window sill you could have planted something in it to grow this would explain the unusual smell. The walls are thin you can hear every noise out side and people talking and partied the whole night, No parking available had to park on the street ( is this the free parking ? ) you hope you don't get clamped or a ticket NOT happy. Bathroom had white tiles and the grouting was black with dirt, the Cedar blind was so dusty you could have put your name on it , this covered a non functioning window that had been boarded up. It was handy to stay for what we wanted that night. Next time will stay at a motel and get a taxi. Lacked customer service by the staff and entering via the back way you drive up an alley way and enter past the dumpster , behind the kitchens and old toilets. We have never left a place so early !! worst sleep .

We stayed here for two nights for a short get away from Auckland. The room was huge and very spacious. The only thing missing was the mini bar. The Hotel is at the center of the city so it is close to a lot of restaurants. We had a sumptuous breakfast in Piccola Italia and the chef and staffs was very accommodating and friendly. Thank you to Ashwin & Preet for a lovely stay. As well as to all the staffs for the lovely stay.

Arriving there please note on the front it is called the Le grand hotel, round by the parking it is called Hamilton City Oaks, round the side of the building is VR Hamilton. Anyway moving on from the awkward carparks located round the back of the hotel, which means you have to walk past the rubbish and washing all over the floor as cleaning is still happening at 4.30pm, past the back of the kitchens to then get to the reception in the pictures - not the best first impression. We check in saying my last name three times then my first name twice.. (I mean how many people are booking in under my name?!) We get the key and go up to the room to find it freezing and without a window. (It hadn't just broken- there was no glass in the frame or in the room anywhere.) Go back to reception to explain this. Their reaction - which window?? then they talk to each other - did you know there was no window- no- do you know. This goes backwards and forwards for some time .. OMG how do you not know and lets all walk up to have a look. So the guy from reception stares at a crack on a side window.. my partner puts his head through the window pane directly in front of the door- NO WINDOW!! The guy stands there confused, as my partner, my son and myself weigh up options to leave immediately. So we get new room - Had we known we honestly we would have taped a pizza box over the window and stayed in that room. We were moved to a room by the balcony (which is nice and looks like the pictures.) 10pm people on the deck with the radio blaring yelling and drinking. We phoned reception and radio turned off but those people continued drinking and talking being loud until 2am (maybe not the hotels fault except insulation on the windows is poor. Door to balcony not locked and in the morning we walk out to find alcohol bottles and glasses left out. Approached reception to say we were unhappy but were assured these people were leaving. Go out for the day and come back in the afternoon.. Cleaning team still out (same as the day before after 4pm with sheets every where).. from 10pm this night there is groups of people sitting on the deck throwing things on the road. Reception phoned. They move. For the next hour on the hour until 4am they move around the hotel at one point there is fighting, girls come down crying because the boys are drunk and fighting. this went on and on..... at 4.30 enough was enough- two night of no sleep and no service we were checking out. As we go down to reception the guy from reception jumps in the elevator with us and a vacuum- have they still not finished cleaning?! He does apologize saying that three other rooms have checked out before us that night and he is trying.. How many guest to do you have leave before you fix a situation.. The highlight came with his next comment. Oh I see you moved from the room you were first allocated to- were you upgraded??? No!!! There was no window!!! Oh no Window- really ?! We grab our stuff and leave... Never ever ever again ! I can't begin to say how many times I told this story to people..Especially the ones that were meeting us on the last morning but we had left at 4.45am and had no intention of hanging around... That kind of lack of sleep and interest from staff was ridiculous...

Pros - I was very happy to see that our room was just as pictured, very large and roomy with lovely high ceilings, huge windows and large king sized bed. Was also great to be right in the centre of downtown Hamilton with fantastic restaurants and cafes all around. The bed was comfortable with good quality linen and pillows. Was nice to have plenty of furniture for lounging in the room. We really enjoyed being in such an old grand building and walked all around the place exploring, the outside balcony was gorgeous. If you want something a little different and appreciate the older style (the wood finish on the wardrobe was beautiful) then you will enjoy it here :) It was a good stay for the price and we would stay again. Cons- We booked as they said free parking, but there were no carparks when we arrived and we were told we needed to request a park on booking (its in the fine print apparently). The staff member was very sorry but couldn't do anything about it so after getting off to a bad start we managed to find a park right outside on the main street. It should be stated clearer on their website that you may not get a park in the premises. Other than the room being a little worn in areas, it was very nice and we enjoyed our stay. There was no minibar as listed in the room facilities. There was a bit of noise at night from town but nothing out of the ordinary for a Saturday night in the city!
