Nice clean hotel with small rooms. Great views of the lake. Restaurant was ok. There are not a lot of choices in El Calafate. Very friendly staff. In town go to Casamiro Bigua if you want healthy alternatives to living on beef.
We spent three nights at the Xelena in late December. We were on the first floor near the pool. We had great views and a very comfortable room. The pool is divine. The breakfast is bountiful, we did not eat at the restaurant for dinner, but did enjoy a delicious casual meal at the bar. One day we picked up a packed lunch for our excursion which was great. The hotel is a little out of town, we did the walk, but can feel far if the wind is up. The shuttle works just fine and taxis are cheap and easy. Given the stunning location and amenities, I would stay here over closer in to town.
We were there in peak season Dec 21 - Dec 24 2017. People were very nice. We were on tours all throughout so did not spend much time at the hotel. Restaurant is good if you don't want to go to town to have lunch or dinner but wud recommend going into town as there is more variety. Their packed lunch for the tours was a lot of food and more than adequate. They even provided us with Argentinian wall adapters free of charge as long as you return them. Down side is they are somewhat further from town but they do have a shuttle service. One can walk into town but it would probably be a mile along the lake front. Overall good value for money
The hotel staff was super! Very helpful & gave us great directions. Nice & clean room & bathroom!! Great view of Largo Argentina!!! Breakfast was good. Not super fancy but really nice We would stay there again.
We had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Xelena. We had a nice-sized room. The bathroom had a bidet and a narrow jacuzzi tub. It was a little small for 2 people -the door opened up against the toilet. The food at the hotel was very good, and the staff was very friendly, but very few of them spoke English. I didn't mind trying to communicate in my very limited Spanish, but if you don't know any Spanish at all, it could be difficult. Our room had a lake view. The level of the lake was low due to being blocked by the Perito Morena glacier, but that is not their fault. The location was convenient for visiting Los Glaciares National Park. I would stay there again.
This hotel is a bit out of the city center but has shuttle hourly (15 min drive). Our room had a nice view, room was large and the pool area outside is nice and pleasant but that were all the pros. The bathroom is small and dated, there were only cc 2 plugs in the wall, wifi is free but extremely poor, the heating is also done by the split air conditioner which is very laud and does not work properly. In early morning you surely wake up due to the laud walkie-talkie discussions in the corridor by the staff. As said the pool area is nice but you are not allowed to have any alcoholic drink there, we wanted to have a beer and it was prohibited... The breakfast is average to a 3-star hotel and the waiters are not too friendly. You heve to pay extra for a normal espresso which is far from being an Italian espresso. The food/sandwiches at the bar are ok on the other hand. This hotel was probably a super modern one 10 years ago but it would need a strong facelifting and also more customer-focused staff.
The hotel building is very nice, the suites are large and comfortable and (some) have wonderful views. A bit far from the city center but the hotel have regular and plenty of shuttles. Breakfast and dinner are good. Staff could be more friendly, specially at the reception. Nevertheless, helpful. Wi-Fi connection is terrible and some improvements should be made to stop the spreading throughout the building of the typical pool smell from the spa. This doesn’t match with the 5* status...
Hotel rooms are clean and tidy; nothing fancy but they are a good base to centre your trips out to the glacier. Beds are large and comfy and we had a beautiful view of the lake. Bathroom was small and a bit dated but overall it's to be expected - agree with some other reviews about the star rating, but note that you don't pay a 5* price so have a think about expectations if you are surprised upon arrival. Downside for us was no kettle in the room; instead they charge room service for cups and a flask of hot water. Breakfast was adequate, as per other reviews it's not expansive but it does the job. We ate one night in the bar - it was okay nothing special. I had pasta and it was tasty but very thick so cut most of the filling out the ravioli. I preferred to take the free shuttle into town which takes 5 mins so no hassle. Was running all day as far as we could see. The last one into town is 2200 (with last return 2220). A big plus for this hotel was the swimming pool. Very clean spa area and nice and warm in the pool. Outside swimming area was fun too. A taxi from the airport to the hotel (2 adults and luggage) cost us 480 pesos then the same guy picked us up for return to airport for 350 pesos. Overall I'd stay again, and so would recommend it, but don't go with high 5* expectations!
This boutique hotel might be a bit outdated here and there, rooms could do with a touch up... but the service and the view really makes up for that. Belen at reception sorted our day trip and when departing at 5:30 am the bar makes you a little breakfast before you leave! Sauna is small but again the lady that tends to it is so hospitable. Pool not so big but nice and toasty and most of all... the view!!! Breakfast ok.
The hotel is located near the marsh and lake (Lago Argentina). depending upon the season there are even flamingos to see from the hotel. The hotel provides shuttle service to town on the hour from 11am-7pm. Takes about 10 min. You can walk but it is a long walk! The staff was very courteous and helpful. Bar had a good selection and the food was pretty good! Most of the suites have great views of the lake and snow covered mountains. Highly recommend this location based upon some of the other hotels we saw in the area.
