Boutique Hotel La Cantera4.0 out of 5.0

We stayed at La Cantera last November. The service was excellent. Staff members made sure we were booked on all of our tours. We had left a jacket at the airport on the plane -- and they helped us get the jacket back! Breakfast in the morning was also excellent and extensive. And you can order packed lunches for day outings. The room was comfortable and large. Sometimes it felt difficult to put on the heat. The hotel is up on a hill from the town. They can offer a car to drive you into town in the evenings. That's the only thing it's a little bit of a hike to go down for the day (coming back up to the hotel), probably a 15 minute walk. Otherwise everything was great
We chose this hotel as it was easy walking down into town, and they offered a free taxi return at night. Room was small but adequate, very warm ( we had to turn off most heating), and the breakfast was fine. Nice bed. Downside was restaurant lacked any atmosphere (we dined there after a long day hiking). Upsides were very helpful staff, good view, and 2 min walk to supermarket if you needed supplies.
Good hotel with good layout. Dinner at the restaurant was affordable and tasty! The rooms fit the style of the pictures, which I would describe as cozy and natural. Bathrooms seem recently updated with nice soaking tub. Only incident was when we came for breakfast at 9:58 and received a curt welcome from the front desk that breakfast would be closing and that we should come earlier (probably true, but we were tired and it was a buffet!).
Stayed for 5 nights, have little to complain about, the hotel is everything you can possibly expect from a 3 star hotel. A few things to help you make an informed decisions, things that were not clear to us at first: Location: "hotel with view over the Lago argentino" is a little misleading, we were expecting the hotel to be quite close to the lake, it's not at all. It's actually on a little hill 10 minutes walk from the main street "libertadores", next to an empty field and close to the large supermarket "la anonima". View: we stayed in the room L. Argentino (all rooms have lake names as far as we could see) - on the reception level in the left corner of the hotel looking over the city. There is a view to the lake and surrounding area, but it's partly obstructed by the buildings in front of the hotel property. Room: very large and spacious, with an ante-room almost. There is floor heating which was for the most part on, but no other heaters to dry your clothes on, say after a heavy rain. Huge bed, fridge, tv, even a dvd player, desk, two very comfortable armchairs and so on. Only downside: really poor noise isolation, we could hear every word and moan of the couple in the next room. Wine glasses in the room are a nice touch, candy on the pillow also. Bathroom: has a bathtub with massage options :), floor heating, bidet. Water is tricky to stabilize to the right temperature, we often had scolding hot or freezing, mostly because the pressure on the hot is very weak. The downside was definitely the shower aspect (the shower function of the bathtub) as it was old - think pre-industrial age - and kind of broken coming out of the wall at every touch. They should replace it. Staff: super friendly and well educated, attending to every need with great care. Breakfast: somewhere above average, had enough choice, especially the pancakes with the jams on offer, but lacked more consistent and well prepared food. Pancakes were bland and kept tearing apart for example. Food in general in medium prices for a hotel, hit and miss mostly. The bruschetta were awesome, the pizza was horrible, the volcano desert brownie with ice cream is delicious! Transfer to city: available daily from 19:30 to 23:00. When dinning out just ask the restaurant to call the hotel for a free transfer back. Overall conclusion: for 84usd a night, well worth it. Ratio quality/price well in your favour. Congratulations to the staff for such a good job. We'll definitely come back.
La Cantera is a lovely hotel up the hill from the town center. Walking distance to everything, as long as you don't mind the hill. Very helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Rooms were spacious and well maintained.
The sweeping view of Lago Argentino fills the lobby, which is a very cozy place to hang out and plan your next activity. Our room was in this main building. It was huge and extremely comfortable. The big bathtub was a great place for a soak. Breakfasts were delicious. It's a short walk downhill to the Main Street and very easy to call for the hotel shuttle to pick you up after dinner. Or you can eat dinner in the dining room. We did this on our third night and enjoyed our steak and rustic potatoes with a bottle of Patagonian Cabernet. We would definitely stay here again.
We had a lovely stay at La Cantera and would visit again in a heartbeat. The staff were very friendly and helpful whether they were assisting in making dinner reservations or accomodating us with a late night last minute bag lunch request. There is a charming little bar where you can grab a drink and some peanuts and then head out to the porch off the main lobby to enjoy the amazing view. The location, off the main drag but within walking distance to downtown, provided us with a beautiful view that we enjoyed nightly. I recommend picking up a bottle of wine in town and enjoying the view from either your own private porch or the larger porch off the lobby.
Been on the road in Chile and Argentina for 3 weeks now and this was by far the greatest breakfast spreads we have seen. Wonderful. Rooms are large quiet and clean. Service was exceptional. If you are in Calafate on a budget don't pass this one up!!!
The hotel is lovely - bedrooms are large and comfortable, large bed. The bathroom was also large and had a jacuzzi type bath. Staff were really helpful and efficient. We used the laundry service, bar and restaurant and the packed lunch service. All was efficiently done and the quality was good. There are good views and it is a quiet location. located from the main street. This was not a problem for us, as it was easy to walk during the day and the hotel has an on request shuttle service, which we did use at night. The driver was excellent and also provided the airport transfer. Breakfast was good and varied. External steps up to the reception area and some rooms were steep but staff helped with luggage. It could be a problem for those with limited mobility.
The hotel offered good service and a well stocked bar. The view from the reception was beautiful. The rooms were okay, the biggest concern was the thin walls, we could clearly here our next door neighbors. The view from the room was of street which forced to keep the curtains drawn. I say the hotel is a bit out of town, but so are the majority of other hotels in the area. They do offer shuttle service to restaurants and city center.
