Seduced by the images on the website we booked in and were given ‘John Hannah’. The bed was comfy and the shower good. The room was very tired though. More Premier Inn than hip. There was a basic design fault that left the bed out of line with the reading lights and the pic of John H, and a tiny gap to squeeze through to the far side between the desk and the bed. There is no air con and it was hot. Our room was on the Frasers department store side so we had noisy deliveries in the very early hours and a staff door that banged constantly. So opening windows wasn’t a great option. The extractor fan in the bathroom didn’t work so the windows and mirrors in the bedroom misted up and we had only one accessible socket near the desk, the other had a wobbly switch (dangerous?). On a plus note, the staff were brilliant, so helpful, the breakfast great (although an egg cup might be a useful thing to have), and the location couldn’t be better.

Very friendly staff and a great location are both in the Angel's Share's favour. This hotel, on top of a bar and restaurant, has rooms named after famous Scots, which adds to its character. Overall the price is about right for the location. We stayed 1 night in the Gordon Ramsey room which is situated in the middle of the hotel. We didn't expect too much for the cost but the room was very warm. A fan had been provided, which suggests previous guests have complained about room temperature in the past. Avoid this room unless you like sleeping with the heating on!

The staff on entering are brilliant. Can't do enough to help and manage this in a natural, relaxed manner. Really makes you feel welcome. My room was small, which is the only reason it doesn't get a perfect score. That aside the rooms are lovely. Bed was big, comfy and I had great nights sleep. Rooms are named after Scottish painters, actors and musicians. Very cool and the rooms feel special. To top it off there was a Dyson fan which was excellent. Despite the room size I'd stay here again.

Centrally located with amazing staff who seemed interested in how your Edinburgh experience was going. Had a meal there on our first night and the cod was excellent. Then stayed for a couple of nights at the end of our Scotland trip. Great rooms. Had everything we needed. Would happily stay there again.

My Mum and I stayed here for two nights from Friday 27th-Sunday 29th April. I had read mixed reviews so was slightly anxious when we turned up! but I needn't had been. It was a lovely experience from the moment we checked in to the moment we left :) we got there at about midday and the lovely girl on reception happily took our bags and told us to come back at around 2ish and the room should be ready by then (which it was) we stayed in room 301 (Nicola Benedetti) it was lovely and spacious with a fairly big bathroom. the noise in the street was very noisy at night, well into the early hours but that's not a reflection on the hotel. all in all a lovely visit and the staff were so friendly! I will be visiting again very soon x

Choose this hotel as it was recommended by a friend. Such a lovely place in an ideal location. Friendly and helpful staff, who were genuinely very nice and wonderful to talk to. We stayed in a deluxe room which was very spacious, big bathroom, sitting area, desk etc. Bed was massive, I think 2 singles pushed together but this made no difference to the comfort as there was no movement of the bases. Food in restuarant was delish as we're the cocktails. Had breakfast across the way so cannot comment on this. Overall we were so impressed and would definitely go back.

Stayed last night in the James McAvoy room. Must be close to the hotels air conditioning system as it whistled and shook the room all night . If you want piece and quiet make sure you don’t get this one if you want to get a decent sleep.

Me and my partner stayed here for his 30th birthday weekend. I’d asked the hotel if they could sort some balloons in the room for when we got there, which they did. There was also 2 complimentary glasses of fizz for us which was really nice. Thank you! Rooms are great, everything you need. Comfy bed and amazing shower! The location is perfect, right on princes street in the centre and parking is really easy in the nearest NCP. The bar downstairs is fab and gets really busy. Saturday night was slightly noisy from the bar but we didn’t mind as we’d been out late ourselves. Would return to this hotel.

Each room in this old building is named after a famous Scot. We stayed in the Annie Lennox room which was decorated with a huge portrait of the Eurythmics singer. (If there had been a Donovan room, I would have asked for it, but there wasn't--the staff member I asked was too young to have heard of him). My only complaint about the room is that it overlooked an alley where loud revellers gathered late at night and loud workmen dragged noisy equipment early in the morning. As others have noted, the bar is a great place to sample Scotch whisky, but I cannot recommend the house cocktails. The hotel location is good. It is an easy walk to tourist attractions, shopping, and restaurants.

We have been coming to Edinburgh for many years and have always enjoyed coming to this bar. When coming here for business this time we decided to try the hotel. Disappointed is an understatement. The room is tiny. You can only just walk around the end of the bed. You look out of the window and are looking straight into someone's office. No privacy unless the curtains are shut. You couldn't sit comfortably in the room. There is one chair under the dressing table which if you pulled it out would block the whole room off. There is no mirror to do your makeup. You need to use the one over the sink in the bathroom and the bath is also tiny. Consequently we are getting ready as quickly and uncomfortably as possible and going out. Very unhappy!
