Hotel St Clair4.0 out of 5.0

The hotel gets its name from its location: right across a narrow one-way street from the beautiful St. Clair beach. This is not in downtown Dunedin, but there are three or four restaurants nearby, so you don't have to drive. The comfortable, spacious rooms feature floor-to-ceiling glass windows that offer spectacular ocean views. We were there in early April and watched a big fall storm come in. I imagine it's fantastic in the height of warm weather. The restaurant was so-so.
Room #105 was amazing! The hotels location was fabulous, we had a balcony looking over the beach, large windows kept the breeze flowing through our amazing and roomy suite, with a two-in-one washer/dryer combo and packets of detergent, with a mini-fridge,2 top stove cooker, a three chair dinner table, a sofa and loveseat and a twin bed in the living room, a tv in the living room and 1 in the bedroom, plus a king size bed which could be closed off from the rest of the living space. Yes free wifi, yes products in the bathroom, yes a hair dryer, yes a huge bathtub with jacuzzi jets and comfortable robes. The restaurant attached to it (Pier 24 I think) offers a 10% discount to fols staying in the hotel, we ate dinner and breakfast there, both meals were great, I had the chicken breast salad and my husband had the salmon for dinner, we both had omelettes for breakfast overlooking the ocean watching surfers.
Our room was on the side but the balcony still had a view of the sea. The room is well appointed with a seating area near the balcony. Car parking under the building was convenient and appeared safe. The restaurant for breakfast is on the first floor and looks out to sea, and our cooked breakfast was excellent which we enjoyed while watching the surfers trying to catch their wave. There are a couple of good reataurants just a stroll along the seafront. Liked this place and would stay here again.
We had a lovely room looking down the sea front. The bed was huge and very comfortable and the shower hot and powerful. The hotel is well placed for restaurants and for the heated salt water pool (great for a morning swim, even when it's cold and wet!). And if you don't want to drive into central Dunedin there is a bus that takes you in that starts behind the hotel.
This hotel stood out as being of a very high standard on a long road trip of almost 10 weeks. Very nicely decorated rooms with great balconies. St Clair beach is fabulous and there are several nice restaurants very near the hotel. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Parking was free on site.
We stayed here 2 nights. The room was wonderful with everything you could want. Great view from balcony over the sea front, you could hear the waves crashing all the time. I managed a paddle in the sea which wasn't too cold. The storm just added to the experience. Very close to bus stop into Dunedin. Secure underground car park. Thanks.
We loved our 1BR corner suite with wrap around balcony overlooking the ocean at the Hotel St Clair. The suite was beautifully appointed with a living room and a mini kitchen with 2 burner cooktop and under counter fridge. The bedroom had a super comfy king bed and the bath had an extra large jetted tub and separate shower. Love the heated towel racks that seem to be standard in NZ hotels. We loved hearing the waves crash day and night, and watching the surfers when the surf was up. Located in the St Clair neighborhood of Dunedin, it’s a drive to the city center, but there are several restaurants within a very short walk. Very beach-y resort feel to St Clair. You can walk along the esplanade or on the sandy beach, though the water is too cold to go in without a wetsuit IMHO. There's public salt water swimming pool which is heated to about 80F nearby at the end of the esplanade. Nice cafe, too.
The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The furniture was a little tired and should have been replaced - it was just very worn looking. The view was perfect and you could see the beach and the surfers. Good restaurants close by.
We have just spent 3 nights at Hotel St. Clair at the conclusion of a tour round the South Island of New Zealand and it is one of the best we have stayed in. It’s modern, very clean, good staff and sits right on the beach. With its own restaurant (a little pricey) and a terrific Italian restaurant close by plus an excellent golf course, St. Clair Golf Club, it offered everything we wanted. It’s a 15 minute drive to Dunedin town centre so very convenient.
We stayed here 2 years ago and liked it so much we booked it again for this visit. We also recommended it to friends and they stayed here when they came over to NZ. The rooms are lovely and it so nice listening to the sea at night. There is always something happening to watch in the sea - surfboard lessons, paddleboarding etc. You have free use of the saltwater swimming pool at the end of the esplanade too. Safe car-parking and friendly staff, and the fact that the restaurant was open for breakfast made it really good.
