We booked this hotel on the basis that it said on the website that it welcomed pets/dogs. To double check I even phoned and emailed the hotel to confirm. On arrival at reception the receptionist couldn't get us (2 adults,1 child age 11 and small cockerpoo) out of the area quick enough. she made reference in one big breath, having asked if we had stayed before, our answer was no, she went on to say " the dog can go straight from here pointing to the desk up to the room, pointing to stairs beside reception, Nowhere else, can't sit in public areas, can't be left in the room by itself, as it may make noise" When we asked if the dog was allowed in the Bar area, separate to main public area, NO. nowhere, was her reply, and added " At breakfast it can't stay in the room by itself, most other guests leave their dog in the car at meal times" We asked if they could do room service, begrudgingly she said " something could be organised" We felt we were being tolerated instead of welcomed, as a business decision that the Hotel might miss out on business if it didn't allow pets/dogs to stay. The location of the hotel is wonderful, directly on Rossknowlagh beach, some of the staff were friendly and polite, Room service was the Bar man who popped up with out pizzia and drinks. The room we stayed in had lovely views of the stunning beach to the right, blocked by the restaurant to the left, but we had a lovely window seat to sit on and have our room service. The two receptionists we came into contact with, at check in and check out were just plain rude. I spent a lot of time researching and making sure that the hotels we stayed in were pet friendly and was looking forward to the treat of staying at Sandhouse hotel, but the atmosphere from the moment we arrived at reception was that we were to be tolerated and no more.....shame really as it is in a great location, but I would not recommend staying here with a pet/dog. This Hotel needs to make its mind up, either your are pet friendly or not, and then customers know where they stand with booking to stay.

My wife, son, daughter, and I lasted stayed at the Sandhouse twenty three years ago. In fact, my son, daughter, and I last visited Ireland from Canada twenty three years ago. My wife is from Ireland so does come to visit her family every few years. Obviously, the place has made some changes over the years but the general ambiance and charm remains. We had a lovely visit and lots of fond memories to recall. We even recreated a picture of the kids, now much older, looking out into the sea. Our rooms were comfortable, although perhaps a bit dated. The food at the restaurant was very good as well.

Most disappointed with our "dog friendly" room, kitted out with cheap laminate flooring and misfits of furnishings and furniture. Eyelet curtains that were purchased off a cheap supermarket shelf not matching the valances. The well used mattresses were adorned with mismatched patterned linen. The antique furniture was rickety, not through age but through poor restoration. The bathroom is in an 80s time warp and the "shower" did not shower and had to be repaired. The room overlooked the beautiful Atlantic Ocean but was adjacent to and overlooked by the Dining Room on one side and an large "extractor fan" chimney on the other side. It should be noted that people who own and travel with dogs do not live in substandard accommodation or in isolation, as we were expected to at this hotel.

We stayed for 2 nights with the kids and had an awesome time. Five star service and breathtaking views. Such a peaceful and comfortable setting- I haven't slept this well for years. Great bar Downstairs with really friendly and fun staff. Gets a good local crowd also so much livlier than your usual hotel bar.

I was treated to a weekend here for my birthday by (an awesome) friend. She knows how much I love Donegal and being near the sea. This hotel is literally on the beach and is quaint in its decor. The restaurant is also overlooking the sea and makes for great photos and view of the sea at sunrise and sunset. We were in a sea view room - which is absolutely worth the money, and I highly recommend it. Rooms were spacious and cute, with tea and coffee making facilities. The tea brand was very nice. The bathroom was lovely and shower super powerful which is what I like. We had dinner and breakfast included in our package; both of which were fantastic. The service was great too, although I do think our cooked breakfast was forgotten about by one of the waitresses and later picked up by the Manager so we left happy. We had a couples massage and I have to say it was one of the best. The pressure was great and the Therapist concentrated on my problem areas. The relaxation room was lovely and cosy with the fluffiest blankets and water and tea available. (We did have a little glass of bubbles included). There's a nice steam room and jacuzzi to enjoy. The only downside of the spa is a rather haphazard layout where you're up and down stairs and a little disorientated due to lack of signage....but again, a minor matter. The hotel has plenty of quiet nooks and crannies to relax and chill and the bar is a good size, with an outdoor area too. We had fantastic service throughout and I left a very, VERY happy girl. I would absolutely recommend and encourage people to visit this wonderful hotel. I'm already planning my return!

Meal was absolutely superb. I couldn't have faulted a thing. The view from the dining room over the beach, part of the #wildatlanticway, was second to none.. I love the Sand House. The management and staff go out of their way to ensure you enjoy a relaxed, welcoming experience.

Just back from our second stay at the sand house hotel. I would like to thank Caroline for looking after my booking and for the most beautiful room with four poster bed and stunning views of the beach. We had booked three rooms and they had all sea views, the beds are comfortable and the hotel is very clean and the staff work hard and very friendly. The food is lovely and the staff in the restaurant could not do enough for you. The only problem we all had was that the weekend was over too quickly. We will definitely return. Thank you all again for a great stay.

The location, the rooms, the restaurant and the beach are so lovely, it is hard to express in words. Our family - seven adults and four children - had a wonderful time at Sandhouse Hotel Aug. 11 - Aug. 13. A delicious breakfast is included and served in the gorgeous dining room with a view of the sea. Since we were so lucky with the weather, one of the dads went surfing every morning (an additional treat that we hadn't reckoned with) and the kids, ages 5 to 12, took surfing lessons. The rest of us, seniors included, took walks on the beach or nice hikes up the cliffs or drove the short drive to Donegal. So Sandhouse is perfect for ALL ages! Just a note: Although we were worried when we read some of the other reviews that there were no other dining options very close by, we didn't even look for any other place to eat once we were there: we had the most exquiste food right where we were in Sandhouse! But be sure to reserve a table as the restaurant is very popular and peope come from far and wide to eat there.

Had a wonderful treatment on first visit to the Marine Spa, very professional and friendly staff, really relaxing and enjoyable treatment and we were encouraged to take time to relax and have some water in the relaxation room afterwards. We popped next door to the hotel for lunch afterwards. The dining room was fully booked and reception told us that they don't serve non-residents in the bar but as we'd been customers at the Spa, they would make an exception. A strange limitation but we were happy to be accommodated.

We stayed in the Sandhouse on our Wild Atlantic Way trip and it was a great stay. We were given a spacious room with a lovely sea view - we spend ages just watching the surfers on the beach! Dinner was delicious, again overlooking the sea. After dinner, we spent a couple of hours reading magazines in the residents bar with Guinness & Bailey's coffees. Despite it being summer, it was raining, so we really enjoyed the cosy atmosphere. Service was great and the Sandhouse won the award for the best breakfast on our trip.
