Fly to Almeria
Anyone who is looking for a slightly off-the-beaten-path adventure should consider Almeria in the Spanish province of Andalusia. A dramatic landscape, secluded beaches, wildlife reserves and lots of sun can be found in this coastal capital.
Attractions
To see the untamed natural beauty of the area, plan a day trip to Cabo de Gata Nijar Natural Park. Considered one of the last unspoiled stretches of land along the Mediterranean, this magical landscape is filled with hidden coves and bays, ruined castles, coral reefs and volcanic rock formations.
Another popular destination is a geo-site called the Gypsum Karst Caves of Sorbas, with its stunning topography and multitude of geodes. There is also an underground landscape with over 1,000 caves, complete with stalactites, stalagmites and rock crystals.
If you like historical museums, tour the underground tunnels used by the rebels in the Spanish Civil War at the Museo Refugio de la Guerra Civil or you can visit one of the most important archaeological sites of the Copper Age, Los Millares. For film buffs, Almeria is where Sergio Leone filmed many famous Spaghetti Westerns .
Hints and tips
Almeria has a fairly constant climate with lows rarely below 50 and highs in the 80s even at the warmest time of year. So pack your bags, fly to Almeria Airport (LEI) and start to explore.
