Delaware’s founding fathers were the first in line to sign the United States Constitution, giving rise to it being known as ‘the First State’. However, it also has another identity: to those who live there, Delaware state is known as the ‘Small Wonder’ in a nod to its diminutive size and the fact that it’s almost bursting with things to see and do. Whether you stay in a romantic beach house for two or take a family vacation in one of our beautiful vacation rentals, you’ll find it a superb place to enjoy some quality downtime.
Vacations in Delaware will introduce you to a state of two halves. To the north, you’ll find sleek, contemporary cities which center around the various industries that have made their homes here. To the south, it’s a much more rural affair, with dainty villages, sun-bleached beaches and sprawling estates, housing historic buildings. Whether you want a beach vacation to explore the Great Outdoors or prefer the hustle and bustle of urban life, there’s something for all tastes and budgets.
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the seaside town of Rehoboth Beach has cemented its position of one of the most popular spots for Delaware package vacations. An ideal destination for families, there are plenty of kid-friendly attractions, such as the funfair-style entertainment to be found along the boardwalk and the outstanding Delaware State Seashore Park. With some excellent stores to explore and a blossoming restaurant scene, it has all the right ingredients for a Delaware beach vacation that everyone can enjoy.
Sandwiched between beaches and bays, the small town of Dewey Beach is ideal for couples and groups of friends. This is the place to go for water sports and outdoor adventure by day, and parties and clubs by night. For something a little more laid back, Fenwick Island ticks all the right boxes. The town’s state park provides all the outdoor activities you could wish for, such as windsurfing, kayaking and fishing. Those with children will appreciate the rides and slides at Thunder Lagoon Water Park, while adults might like to sneak a night out at one of the excellent waterfront restaurants.
Close to Bethany Beach, Ocean City is another firm family favorite. Like the state that houses it, it might be small, but it’s got plenty on offer to enjoy. More developed than a typical Delaware beach, you’re never far from a restaurant or some of the fun-filled children’s attractions. Catch a ride in a Bay Hopper boat, browse the boardwalk for seaside entertainment, or try your hand at crabbing in the bay at Northside Park.
Home to the Delaware Kite Festival, the Seaside Nature Center, and the Beach Plum Island Nature Preserve, Cape Henlopen State Park bears all the hallmarks of Delaware vacations or families. However, there is another side to this superb state park. Among the sandy dunes and fertile wetlands, you’ll find a place where you can get back in touch with Mother Nature. Couples looking to escape the pace of daily life can relax while watching hawks on the wing, or baby birds being fed by their parents. Head to the end of the cape and you can leave all the crowds behind you.
For city life, there are few destinations to match Wilmington for character and attitude. Typically laid back, it’s a charming mix of big city life with a small-town feel. Look out for the Brandywine Zoo, Brandywine Creek, and the Delaware Art Museum
Summer is the time to make the most of the beaches, so book your vacations in Delaware between early June and late August. While the weather is warm, the humidity is low, providing excellent conditions for sightseeing.
If you’re looking to travel between towns and cities, the car is king. There’s a good network of highways and the smaller roads are well-maintained. DART First State provides comfortable and reliable public transport across the region.
