The Strand is an historic hotel in a fairly central location in Yangon, just around the corner from the start of Pansodan Street. Built in 1903 and once the crown jewel of hotels in the British Raj, the Strand was renovated some 30 years ago and is still beautifully maintained. It is well worth staying for a night, even if it is at the upper end of one's budget, just for the experience. Some practical advice: the rates go way down in the rainy season, when travelers are fewer. I got a suite with a double bed and sitting room, 30 ft. high ceilings, separate bath, washroom and toilet, turndown servce and complimentary drink for under $100/night. During the rainy season the restaurant is closed, though August, but the bar (good) and cafe (excellent) are still open. Some downsides: there are probably too many staff. There is a butler's desk on each floor, where one hands in the key when leaving the building. There are always 2-3 staff around the desk, more than necessary in my opinion, but the staff are very polite, well-trained and unobtrusive. The rooms are almost too big for a single traveler. These are minor complaints, though. Everyone visiting Myanmar should make the Strand part of their experience, even if just for a drink in the bar.

What can I say, it a beautiful hotel, with a very felt history and absolutely loving staff. The surprised me with a cake and flowers for my birthday.
