Why You Should Take a Flight to St Martin

Split between France and the Netherlands, the sun-kissed island of St Martin is diverse, even by Caribbean standards.

The northern half of the island – the Collectivity of Saint Martin – belongs to France, and the more touristy southern half - Sint Maarten – is part of the Netherlands. Add in the African and Creole influences and the island has a unique feel, and some of the best food in the Caribbean.

There are white sandy beaches to relax on, jungles to explore and a multitude of bars, nightclubs and casinos to enjoy on this hugely popular holiday isle with two distinct personalities.

When to Book Flights to St Martin

Peak season runs from December to April and the island can get very crowded. But the weather is glorious with temperatures in the 80s.

The island’s dual identity has some unexpected benefits. The French half celebrates carnival in February, and the Dutch have their party in March or April, which means twice the fun.

May sees the hugely popular St Maarten Regatta and the largest fishing tournament in the Caribbean takes place in the French half in June.

Things calm down during the summer hurricane season and it gets hot and humid. But fall can be a good time to find a cheap flight to St Martin / St Maarten as the island gears up for the winter rush.

The runway ends right next to Maho Beach and planes fly in over the beach at very low altitude.

There is a decent selection of shops and there are plenty of bars and restaurants. There are minibuses, taxis and hire car firms at the airport.

The French half of the island has L'Esperance or Grand Case Airport (SFG), but only regional flights land here and the airport has limited facilities.
